Thank You Thank You ...and Thank You !!! I've learned more about color and the rewards of mixing primary colors up by yourself than the hours upon hours I have spent watching people with dozens of "pre-mixed" paints. When You mixed the colors together I really got to see what make(s) the color. The individual colors "become" another color, instead of being a seemingly original color on its own. Don't get me wrong; I know that every color is a calculated mixture, but the understanding of how it was transformed is lost when You're only seeing the end results. Again, Thank You. This was a Great Instructional Video.

I just purchased this set along with Quin. Gold from Daniel Smith and I'm soo excited. I hesitated at first because I knew I was going to become addicted and its pricey but I figured what the heck. :) the essentials can be mixed and create some gorgeous colors and I just had to get Quin gold because it's such a beautiful color. I'm lucky I was researching split-primary color theory before I got these so I knew the Phthalo Blue (GS) [green shade] was the cool version. Though I'm planning to do charts of the cool vs. warm primaries, I'll also do some mixed charts to see how they neutralize.

There’s an ongoing debate fir decades but honestly it doesn’t matter. We can use it when that color, whatever temperature it is. 😍

Wonderful video Sandy! Although I am not primarily a watercolorist, I've always found Daniel Smith to be a superior product. As far as I'm concerned you did not mix your blues up. ;) I have always considered Phthalo to be warm and Ultramarine to be cool. In fact, I just discussed this in a recent video on split primaries!

+Sandy Allnock LOL. Yes, I have seen artists list them both ways, I think it depends on how you use color. To me, at least, the way I see it seems obvious. Phthalo Blue leans towards green which is warmer than violet therefore it is warm and Ultramarine is cool. Phthalo reminds me of tropical oceans and summer. Ultramarine looks icy like a violety winter sunset. Does that make sense? :)

Isn't ultramarine which is purple toned the warm and phalo blue which is greenish the cool?

You didn’t mess up the warm and cool blues, and monochromatic pigment is the proof, in a pigment of red, when with heat, it turns yellow. And when violet , it turns blue which is a bit Cyanish like a Phthalo blue which is closer to yellow

So the vertical column color is 2:1 to the horizontal color row? Or as you stated vertical column color is big dot and the horizontal row color is little dot.Am I understanding that correctly?

So I'm probably one of those idiots who buys all the tools but has no talent or common sense. I began with Derwent watercolor pencils and Inktense, and love them, but wanted to move on to "real" watercolors. I bought all 105 colors of the Mijello Mission Gold paints. Do you recommend putting forth the effort of creating a swatch chart for that many colors? If so, I'm guessing I would need to buy one or two of those large uncut sheets of paper? haha Thanks!

Wow! That sounds like heaven. The Mission Gold paints are great and very tempting for art supply addicts. You could swatch all 105 on a 22" x 30" watercolor sheet and then keep a palette with 12-48 of your favourites. Good luck.

At the 1:20 mark: isn't French Ultramarine a "warmer" blue compared with Phthalo Blue which is a "cooler" blue with a green bias?

Artists debate blues all the time…the great thing is you only need to know what color you’ll get when mixing ❤️

Yes I'd use the blues the other way around. Phthalo blue is a cool blue and a stand in for cyan.

I like your videos. I would only ask that you increase your volume. The difference between you and the ads that pop up means that my ears get completely blasted when a commercial comes on. That Bealls ad is an ear drum destroyer.

There are artists who disagree on the blues being warm or cool. In reality it does not matter one iota. Use the color that works to paint what you want.
