Good review I was trying to make up my mind between Daniel Smith and M Graham . . .this is very helpful. I also love your style, I can almost see a story unfold in each of your sketch book.I can suggest keeping track of the colors in your sketch book buy dabbing some on a spare sheet while jotting down the pigments used. You can then insert this sheet at the end of your sketch books for futur reference. . .

If you use Mijello Mission Gold Viridian, it won’t turn into a rock on you and actually rewets nicely. I believe the M. Graham version works the same but it’s been a while since I’ve used my M. Graham palette so I could be wrong, I’ll let you know. However, I believe Mijello sets better in pans so it’s good for studio and travel, whereas M. Graham may leak/“flow” out of the pan. Since viridian is one of my go to colors, I thought I’d just share this tip :)

+Yasmine S. I'm not sure why I can't see some of your comments on my videos. They just disappear. Anyway, I'm copying and pasting the comment that I see from my KZbin settings page to answer your question. *QN* LoL Teoh you review Daniel Smith colors in a Rembrant box. Why not ? But i found it funny. I just seen another review of Daniel Smith colors. I particularly ate the amethyst color which looks like a durty color and i was very confused because i thought Daniel Smith was perfect for all, so expensive cost are the tubes ! Also, the whole test on paper for each colors (the chart) doesn't convaince me. I had the same case of regret with Sennelier which is so expensive ! But as you said on another video, the feeling depend also of the individual personality. It seems that koreans are very good in manufacturing watercolors with natural pigments and arabic gum. I generally like the Mijello's reviews. Actually i am working with another korean watercolors brand, this is ShinHan and i love it. I should be pleased if you give me your opinion on this brand and if you made a review on it because i am unfortunately not able to do it. *REPLY* There are many brands of watercolour available. Differences between the high grade paints aren't really that significant, at least to me. My general advise has always been to buy something that you can easily and cheaper replace whenever you run of out paint. It's good to get artist quality even if they are more expensive because unless you're going to paint regularly, the paint is going to last a long time. And lastly, choosing which colour or brand is really individual preference. Most important thing is if you enjoy using the colours that you've picked out.

Excellent palette choices, Teoh. I'd read Daniel Smith's Viridian doesn't rewet well, so have opted for Scmincke's (Schminke also has formulated their tube paints for pan use.) I've also switched out Permanent Alizarine (with an L2 rating) for Perylene Maroon from Daniel Smith (as suggested on Handprint.) It's a good approximation and garners an L1 lightfast rating. All your research and handmade palette swatches are spectacular! Thanks for all your effort!

+Judith Meyer I've always like to draw. I'm not exactly sure when I started drawing. But I started sketching more seriously since 2009. So what are you intimidated about? I might want to create a sketching course and could use some feedback on what I should include in the course.
@jmeyer3rn9 жыл бұрын
I don't tend to get shapes quite right, that is building eves, etc. I have a terrible time with perspective. Maybe I should stick to bunnies. I do take lessons, but my teacher is very vague. I also worry about reference photos. I know I have some good ones of my own, but is it okay to practice other people's work. I would never try to sell these pieces. So I guess my biggest problem is in perspective, also stiffness, shapes, depiction of grouping of buildings, small towns, etc. That's alot I know.
@teohyc9 жыл бұрын
+Judith Meyer I've two other videos that might be useful to you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooPJkmyGltljgrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6fFf415r9h0bJI You should just practice from your own reference photo. If you practice from other people's work, you're actually being influenced by their interpretation of the scene. As for perspective, don't think of it as perspective. Focus on the relationship of the shapes, lines, dots. For example, where one point is in relation to other point. Is it higher, or lower. How many units high or low. I would highly recommend you check out this book called 'Keys to Drawing' www.parkablogs.com/content/book-review-keys-drawing

Just like Daniel Smith, you can put them in empty pans to dry. But because of the honey,in M Graham or Sennelier, one attracts bugs if you paint outside.Not fun. The more heavily pigmented the paint the worse it stains too. LOL. So my Fav pans are Schmincke.

@bevroberts84408 жыл бұрын
I hope this is not a stupid question, but you mention this color or that color as having a very nice granulating texture. Is the granulation a personal preference or is that something all watercolor artists like in general (I have yet to use any watercolor; rank beginner here!).
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
+Bev Roberts It's a personal preference and it really depends on the subject as well. E.g. Sometimes you might not want to use granulating pigments to paint skintones for example.

@jodane61866 жыл бұрын
Originally in history, many colors were gemstones or minerals: ultramarine was ground lapis lazuli and very expensive. Burnt sienna and burnt umber are earths or clays that are roasted to get the color; ochre and raw sienna are earths or iron ore used ground without roasting. Daniel Smith has created paints with the original ground minerals.

do you recommend daniel smith or kremer? i'm trying to get a few starter colors...

+Airbugg Kremer Pigments box set 1 is a good deal for the money. 14 full pans for USD $80. www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-kremer-pigments-14-full-pan-watercolour-box-set If you want to pick your own colours, then go for an empty box and pans with Daniel Smith. I recommend going the Kremer Pigments route if you're in USA.
@Airbugg9 жыл бұрын
+Teoh Yi Chie. I actually live in New York so I have access to the kremer store. I haven't been there yet but I hear they have a workshop where you can make your own watercolor set. Maybe you should check it out if you come here. Anyway what I meant was...which brand do you like better? I have access to both. I like the granulation of kremer but I hear a ton of great reviews about Daniel smith. I would appreciate your input. Thanks!
@teohyc9 жыл бұрын
+Airbugg Kremer sell the pigments in powdered form so you can make your own paints from that. It's just more convenient to get them as box sets. I like both Kremer Pigments and Daniel Smith. It's difficult to choose between the two. I feel that Kremer Pigments paints are more granulating, at least those in that box set 1 are. Daniel Smith is good too. I recommend you try Kremer Pigments first. At least when you buy the set, you'll also get the metal box. If you buy Daniel Smith first, you'll have to spend extra to buy a watercolour box, and that's going to be at least USD $25. Not sure if you've seen my review for the Kremer Pigments paints at www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-kremer-pigments-14-full-pan-watercolour-box-set Kremer Pigments is quite distinct and standout among other brands because of the granulating. I love that.

Hello Teoh, Thank you for your detailed video about Daniel Smith watercolours, I really enjoyed it and exploring your work further. I've included you in a blog post at www.creativelybelle.com/finding-inspiration-online/ and hope you like it. I found the bright SE Asian greens so vibrant in comparison to our Australian bush colours. I hope you get an opportunity to visit Australia and get painting here. Best wishes, Belinda

I don't understand (and don't like ) the fact that you said "you shouldn't use phtalo blue and phtalo green on their own. you should mix them" . Why ? they are so gorgeous I would totally use them on their own. Perhaps for the particular use of watercolor that YOU do it don't work, but not anyone paint that kind of things. It would be better in my opinion if you said "I don't use it alone" instead of telling that nobody should use them alone.
