In this video, you will see me make a blind contour sketch with a watercolor pencil of a teapot and creamer cup. Next, I apply rich watercolors, draw patterns with watercolor pencils, apply collage pieces and generally enjoy the process of creative expression. This video should leave you feeling relaxed and inspired to start your own watercolor painting.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this point in my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new.
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something from amazon, I will receive a small commission with no extra cost to you.
In this video I have used:
Golden Polymer Medium (Gloss): amzn.to/3JdBjNA
I used this to glue the Lunaria (money plant) to my painting.
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/41UP7ns
You can buy watercolor paper in many weights and sizes. I like 140-lb Arches cold press in either blocks of 20 bound sheets or free sheets in whatever size suits my purpose. Most often, I find the best prices at Blick Art.
Derwent watercolor pencils: amzn.to/3jSau7K
All of the sketching you see in this video is with Derwent watercolor pencils.
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. Check blick art to buy one.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd

Lovely to see you use the tea pot and creamer from Boo. They have just been sitting in the cupboard doing nothing. Now, you are giving them meaning - why they were gifted to us!!! As you know, I am fun number one. And you continue to inspire me, to try and turn on my creative brain. So, thank you.

Because I am hopeless at drawing I really love the technique you use, thank you.

Drawing is all about SEEING and shutting off your Left Brain so that your Right Brain can take over. I’m making a series about How to Draw since I am teaching my middle-school twins right now. The first one went up last week - come along with us and learn to draw!

I appreciate your kind words! It’s fun to knit together the videos and share what I’m doing here, but it’s even more fun to hear that someone else finds inspiration by watching.

As I think more as I watch and listen to you work, experimental is a word that fits you, too.

Your contour drawing/painting is quite lovely and expressive. It's a drawing practice I have let slip so thank you for the reminder. Thank you also for showing the concertina books; having alternative forms of structures for experimentation and play can, and does, result in wonderful creative discoveries.

Peggy - thank you for yet another delightful comment! Those concertina books have been such a fun “new” way for me to explore over these past few weeks.

More beautiful Paintings from you. You are inspiring me so much! This morning I found a fabulous book in a charity shop. printed in 2005 by Lonely Planet called A JourneyThrough Every Country In The World. I think it contains 1200 images, all beautifully printed. I’m feeling I ought never to be without inspiration with this book now. There are people, landscapes, fabrics, patterns, colours, shapes, values, forms . . . . . You’d love it I am sure. And in case the segue isn’t clear in my sentences above . . . It was your monastery, cactus, ceramics paintings that made me want to have different references of inspiration. As I don’t have a printer, this book is going to be invaluable. And if I don’t live up to my artistic aspirations, we’ll, it’s a beautiful to look through with a cup of tea and learn about the world. Plus it will be like having an exercise workout as it is soooooo heavy. See what benefits I’m getting via yourself 🎉

I am binge watching your videos this week. What a joy and inspiration you are! I have started some of my own paintings which I can finally feel they are my own ( from my photos) but inspired by so much from you and S trevena. Love honesty plants , grow them and have sewn gold fabric versions into art quilts as well. Please keep posting!

I LOVE this one! I'm curious, do you plan on painting on the back of your concertina books, or are you keeping them one-sided?

Awww, thanks. You know, so far I haven’t painted the back of any of my concertina books… not for any particular reason, though…

I loved it. I’m always inspired…until I get to My blank page. I have every medium but oil paints, yet I am frozen with a dozen blank watercolor journals and a mound of paper just begging for color, lines, something. But, no. I just watch another video.

Oh gosh, well, all of those wonderful materials will be there waiting for you when your creative spirit finally kicks into gear! I think we go through phases in life and so perhaps you are in the phase right before a creative explosion? It’s so rewarding to make marks and create something new.
