I was married to a man who would not help with any childcare, household chores, or maintenance of the house. As a result I learned to do so many things, such as making a deck for our home, laying carpet, laying laminate, tiling, and on and on. It was unfair of him to refuse to do anything in the home but as a result I became incredibly competent because of it.

I appreciated your sarcasm on the modernist update to the library building. It got me thinking that (apart from it being a crime against beauty) the modernist aesthetic is partly so unsuccessful because of it's unhealthy pursuit of perfectionism. It's a good example of how perfectionism often becomes an enemy of beauty and creativity.

That moment when you KNOW the painting is finished is a magical thing. Painting sometimes ends with a crescendo…but other times with just one small, quiet note. But there is no telling when that will happen. It is definitely just this overwhelming immediate feeling that “voilà!” it is finished. It’s a most amazing feeling. Thank you for another beautiful video. I love the painting! I could talk about all these things you mentioned, but it would be a novella 😆
@63artemisia632 жыл бұрын
@ brightpurpleViking Many, many painters - in fact all I’ve ever known, which may be dozens - say it doesn’t happen that way. Rather, they ask themselves: Can I do anything to improve this? When the answer is no, the painting is done. Your description sounds like a highly romanticized version we might see in a movie.

@@63artemisia63 hahaha! I’ve been an advanced art instructor for thirty one years. I disagree, from what I have seen thousands of times. But we each have our own experience I guess. We do, however, always see room for improvement no matter if the painting is finished or not.

I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). I’ve had to overhaul how I approach taking care of my brain (journaling) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my journaling habit, workouts and studying - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT. And part of that is routinely putting in work on your dreams and projects despite how you’re feeling! I was a zombie for 2 years, so depressed - feeling like those two years are just gone - the critic in my head is vicious. This video is a message to keep my head up and keep marching forward. I’ve felt doubtful about my KZbin channel since the start but I try to keep going through the feelings of doubts because I know you’re out there doing the same!!

I used to get lost in details and lose part of my life for that reason. Anxiety and low self steem made part of my personality. After treating anxiety-related depression (which is always in treatment for me), I valued so much feeling emotions. When you're taking antidepressants, it's like you lose part of your emotions: the good and the not so good ones. It's like in painting: when it gets to the point where you get lost in details - many times - you may spoil the essence of your piece. Thank you, Valerie! I love your message! I think of striving in two different ways: There’s striving for perfection and then there’s striving for excellence. Striving for perfection is usually externally driven and often brings anxiety and emotional fatigue. Striving for excellence comes from within and (hopefully) brings us energy and a sense of peace. It comes from confidence and a simple desire to do our best. It’s not driven by the expectations of others or from a fear of being judged as inadequate. It’s a wonderful thing and helps us sustain our passions without feeling burned out! On a side note, it’s nice to see that you’re so comfortable with relative solitude. I think solitude is healthy and (IMHO) enjoyable. We live in a loud world! It’s nice to step away from the noise and experience some quiet peace. You are gifted in many ways! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us. :)

Oh my. Was so blessed by your views on perfectionism. Something I have struggled with for so long, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have it as a constant issue, something always concerning. Seeing it, perfectionism, as a friend however has completely opened me up to a whole new way of approaching my relationship with this unsettling side of the persona. Please do more of these lovely works in settings like this. The room she is sitting in adds so much to the story of the portrait. You have captured so much of her extended self with these few brushstrokes, her story is so much more present. Portraits are lovely but often keep you aloof and away from the subject. In your painting though, I feel she is relatable and I might even know her just a little. I like the intimacy of this painting. I hope you can get cool there. It’s so hot! Blessings for your gentle wisdom.

I really like the idea of our perfectionism being a friend. However the relation can quickly sour if you don't put in the effort to understand and build up the relationship, which is why I think people are so fast to burn the bridge. To me perfectionism lets me know when I'm working on something that is deeply important to me, they want me to put in adequate effort and see that the final result was reached with care and a sense of worth. It will let me know if what I made wasn't pretty or perfect and that can honestly hurt, but at the same time it will embrace me and say be proud of what you've done. It says, Perfect, no. But you gave it your all, this is the best you could produce with your current skill-set and you managed to get your feelings across. Whiles Valerie's friend may push her to be of the best, mine wants me to work hard on things important to me. Friends push you in the direction you need to go so no ones friend will be the same. As for making something without having a picture in mind, I understand but don't completely agree. I don't know what it's like for you but for me it's like having all the pieces to a jig-saw puzzle. I don't know what the final result will look like but I have generally understand of how I want my work to feel by the type of pieces I choose to work with. Whether the pieces are sad, tranquil, happy, peaceful, ect. (I'm not a painter but this could be like the colors you work with or environment of your painting). As I work I start to see what pieces fit together and my picture starts to come together. Then as picture comes together the direction I want to go becomes a lot more focused. Much like you I found the words and phrasing I was looking for to be quite elusive so this didn't come out exactly as I wanted but I hope I was still able to convey what I said in an understandable way. As always thank you so much for the video I really like them and they mean a lot to me. I look forward to the next one!

I have never thought of perfectionism as a friend. I am one of those people who can't work on a piece for days, or months on end. It isn't that I want to rush or hurry, it is because I find myself not able to concentrate on a piece for that long. It gets tedious and boring. Then I find myself over thinking and the perfectionism goes into over drive. It becomes obsessive. So your embracement of perfectionism puts a different perspective on it. I wish I could go into my own thoughts and feelings, but they turn critical and dark. I must have a movie I've seen a million times playing in the background because I can see the movie in my head and no negative self talk gets in and ruins my work. I'm sitting here thinking how different my work would be if I embraced the quiet, the longer time spent on a piece, and the voice in my head. Would it be better? Or worse? You've given me a lot to think about. Thank you

I rarely believe in coincidences. Just yesterday, I had a talk with my partner about my perfectionism and how it hinders me. I'm an ENFP and my personality type tends to lose interest in things very quickly. I am always in search for new exciting things, I start many, but finish a few. Streaks keep me going, I am an achievement-driven person, but if something breaks my streak, I tend to lose interest and motivation immediately. Before discovering my MBTI I even suspected I had ADHD, but since I'm able to focus for long periods of time and my concentration is quite good, I dismissed that idea. I found your videos to be quite soothing and reassuring. And I discovered your channel at a very interesting time too. ✨

Valerie… Thank You for being here…I appreciate your videos… art … and your words. It’s been a frustrating and stressful year… but I feel better after watching you here…you always have insight and your words make me think… so thanks for that… ! This morning I had coffee… on my patio… and did a watercolor painting… the first in a while… I enjoy the process… and let it happen as I felt it should… YES… not spending too much time on the details… and being more impressionistic… helped me to say … now it is finished… and put down my brushes. Your videos are like a gift… thank you for giving… so inspiringly and selflessly. …… if you’re afraid to go to the basement… and need assistance… I can bring a flashlight 🔦… it’s the least I can do… since you’ve shined a light… for so many of us… by being here for us … AGAIN… thanks 🙏… Stay safe and well and… cooler 🌞Peace 💐
