Just stumbled on to your watercolor tutorial… I’ve been watercolor painting for about two years with many different instructors! In every case, I’ve not been happy with my result as I do want to loosen my look. YOUR painting style is amazing and inspiring and I’m a new huge fan and will be hoping to benefit from your tutorials! Thanks for your comments Suzanne. I do draw a lot, in my sketchbooks, but not always on my watercolor paper. Many times I will do a few sketchy lines to ‘map out’ my plan before I paint, but not an intricate drawing. Having said that, in the case of when I paint structures like buildings, or when I do an animal or figure, I will have a drawing in place on my watercolor paper. If it’s an intricate drawing I might do it first on a large piece of cartridge paper and then transfer it to my watercolor paper, but that’s rare..I have to admit I mostly freehand draw . I totally believe we should draw everyday, among other things, it helps us understand form which is paramount to an artist.

Hi Rae Well I tried it again, managed more white spaces, I enjoyed the fact that it was a stretch and bit by bit get better with the brush. Am taking this painting for my assignment painting for the zoom watercolor class I am doing and will show your painting as well. This week’s assignment demo from the teacher was far too complex for me and this will be a very credible complex substitute. Hi Rae I just found you yesterday. I tried it! I am a beginner so it was quite a stretch. It is going to take time and practice to be able to make such beautiful brush strokes. It was good to attempt, I enjoyed and the mind only thought about painting which is very relaxing. I am pleased with my attempt even though it needed more white spaces.
