Nature-based flood protection on Toronto’s waterfront
Toronto’s waterfront is undergoing the largest current redevelopment in North America: The Port Lands Flood Protection & Lake Shore Boulevard East projects. For decades, industrial lands were cut off from a rapidly growing city. Waterfront Toronto was created in 2001 out of a need to realize the city’s full potential. Among diverse and substantial social and economic benefits that the development will provide, the effort is enhancing the flood resilience of Toronto by engineering a kilometre-long extension of the Don River. Much like phase one of flood protection in Corktown Common, here Waterfront Toronto is again using natural solutions to solve engineering challenges. When complete, Port Lands Flood Protection will deliver vast new recreation space and improve public access to the water. The speaker will describe some of the project’s flood protection measures, two parks, five bridges, road and other infrastructure improvements.
Presenter:
Julius Gombos, Senior Vice President, Waterfront Toronto
About Waterfront Toronto: www.waterfront...
Waterfront Toronto is the public advocate and steward of Toronto’s waterfront revitalization. We are in the midst of the largest urban redevelopment project in North America, putting people first and reconnecting our city to the water's edge. We are developing mixed-use neighborhoods with high-quality parks and public realm, state-of-the-art infrastructure and the highest standards of environmental sustainability. In 2001, the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto established Waterfront Toronto (then known as the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation) to oversee all aspects of the planning and development of Toronto’s central waterfront.
Waterfront Toronto’s vision is to work with community and public and private sector partners to create waterfront parks, public spaces, cultural institutions, and diverse and sustainable commercial and residential communities. By employing global best practices and made-in-Toronto solutions, the city’s new waterfront communities will protect and enhance our natural environment, and will ultimately establish themselves as global models for sustainability.
