Waterlock - Volva Penta Exhaust - Winter Sailing - Ep. 121

Our ongoing Volvo Penta engine saga continues. We decide to replace the waterlock in the exhaust hose before ours finally gives up and fills the boat with water. All seemed to go well until we read the installation instructions and realised that this was not going to be as simple as we thought.

Wanted to check out exhaust silencers and it took me to your video. I can’t get away from you girls! I wanted to what the inside my silencer looks like I think it’s full of gunk. It’s the same as the one you replaced. Thanks for sharing.

Those steel Volvo ones just rot from the inside and they are not cheap. The Vetus seems to be holding up well and was half the cost.

The sailing school I sailed with had to replace their exhaust on a similar year Bavaria to yours but in that is was a full stainless tube instead of rubber and it was like a pepper pot with lots of fine holes in due to rust. Useful video thanks.

You are making us feel very happy about our composting toilets even if getting rid of 42 year old sewage pipes was disgusting. Plus we hope to find that air cooled electric motors are cleaner, more reliable and essentially zero maintenance. Happy to sell you a spare diesel engine if you want it.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, our Jabsco toilet is fine. It does not smell and as long as we keep it clean and occasionally dose it with vinegar overnight then it seems to stay clean. We will keep our existing engine. It is starting to feel like a close friend ;-)

@@SailingYachtSaltyLass sadly while the Blakes loos themselves were ok the seacocks and hoses were not. Plus there was no holding tank. When changes are needed the composting loo is a no brainer, really nice to use, no pipes, no pollution, no water use, no holes in the boat, no smells. I'm averse to needing to become friends with an engine 😂
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 4 жыл бұрын
We already had the holding tank. We just changed every hose and the the seacock. We thoroughly flushed the system beforehand and even used bleach since we were doing all the pipes and valves anyway. The system gives us no trouble and a cartridge loo would fit badly. We watched someone else change the loo on our model of Bavaria. The manual jabsco stays!!!!!

What model Vetus is it? looks like WLOCKL40R. I have a 2004 B36 and the Volvo Penta exhaust is starting to go like yours..
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 2 жыл бұрын
Ours just said WLOCKLR on the side but it was the 4.3L capacity model for a pipe of 45mm diameter. There are more details on our website in this article which mentions how to check the capacity you need. www.saltylass.co.uk/rusty-waterlock Also if you are looking at the exhaust system, keep an eye on your exhaust elbow. Ours went when we were at sea. Luckily we were close in when it happened.

Hairdryer? What is one of those? We salty lasses dry our hair by letting the four winds do the work (or holding our heads upside down under the hand driers in the toilets) ;-)

What I want to know is.... why do we have to double clamp all hoses if it's so damed hard to get the hoses off when the clamps have been removed? Well done on another job done. I assume two more jobs have been added to the list as you have been progressing this one? It's never ending.

Hi Frank - It is a Vetus LP45. It has a capacity of 4.3 litres and a hose size of 45mm. If you are replacing and old waterlock, make sure you get one that is correct for your boat as the size may vary from ours. Thanks for your comments on the videos. It is great to know that they are helping people and hopefully are fun to watch as well.

@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 4 жыл бұрын
No - the shoes are as noisey as ever..... ok ok , the engine... it sounds the same inside and standing on the pontoon. Due to the weather we have not been able to leave the marina so we have no idea what it is like at sea but I would guess there is not much difference.

Just a heads up, my engine overheated (impeller issue) and the waterlock unit, same one, had a strap on it to hold it down. Well in the process of overheating the strap melted to the plastic housing and caused major holes. In turn, I had no water or exhaust fumes exiting the boat. It was all pouring into the engine room. Just wanted to let you know something to be aware of. I am thinking about using a stainless steel strap.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass
@SailingYachtSaltyLass 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I imagine that getting a steel strap to fit that waterlock is a project all by itself.

It has been absolutely fine. We have had no problems with it. If your engine is that sort of age, have a mechanic whip the exhaust elbow off and check it out. Ours went around the time the waterlock went "pop".

We understand what you mean about "scary videos". Bev once said that having read the pilot notes for our home port, she would too scared to go there". Knowledge can be frightening sometimes. On the plus side, we know that our exhaust system's parts should be good for years to come. We just hope that is true of the rest of the engine :-)
