Scenes from the epic 1970 film WATERLOO featuring Rod Steiger as Napoleon, Christopher Plummer as the Duke of Wellington and directed by Sergei Bondarchuk. The video is dramatically set to the song "Victory" by Two Steps From Hell. The 1970 Soviet/Italian movie tells the story of the battle of Waterloo in June 1815 and the film was famous for its extravagant production with 15.000 authentically dressed extras.
In 1815 Emperor Napoleon returned from his exile on the Italian island of Elba and quickly regained his power in France. The Allies concentrated their armies in Belgium to face him; the British force under Wellington and the Prussian under Blücher. Napoleon marched quickly; crossed the border with his Northern Army and succeeded in separating the allies. At Waterloo, south of Brussels, the French Emperor engaged the British. However, the Prussian army was on its way.

@@copferthat If you are referring to 3:28, no that is not the scene. At that point the army they are seeing is too far away to tell if it is the Prussians. In the movie there is a scene - after Napoleon commits the Imperial Guard, but in reality it happened before that - where Blucher arrives and gives a short speech about showing no mercy and then they charge into battle. Shortly after that the Imperial Guard falters and collapses. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6ilg6apoNl6pcU

@@daniel_sc1024 … It was not the fire of Blucher’s Prussians that tore the heart out of the Guards.. Napoleon was warned by one of his own Generals that the British Infantry was of higher quality than anything that he had yet faced. He dismissed that advice, claiming that the battle would be “a picnic”.

@@peterwebb8732 Ironically, I had an argument with someone in another thread about just this; he claimed Napoleon beat Wellington at Waterloo and it was Blucher alone who beat him, but I argued the fact that it was the British and Dutch troops under Wellington that broke the Imperial Guard. Here I was just stating the sequence of scenes in the movie and the Blucher scene was omitted from this montage - Napoleon commits the Guard, Blucher arrives, the British Foot Guards fire on the Imperial Guard, the Imperial Guard falters. In the movie you can hear shouting to the effect "The Prussians are here. Every man for himself." and "The Guard has fallen. We have lost." The movie is incorrect, though, in that the Prussians arrived before Napoleon committed the Imperial Guard.

I agree with you fully! I decided to focus the footage 100% on the epic showdown and polemic between Napoleon and Wellington just because I had only so much time with the song being only five minutes long. I did include a short scene in there where both Wellington and Napoleon are watching the Prussians arrive in the distance, this because I knew all who know the history of Waterloo, like myself, also know the importance of Blücher's arrival and that it decided the battle.

The movie does show the Prussians briefly but clearly implied that the British broke the Old Guard, whereas the Prussians were the cause. In his valuable book "Waterloo: New Perspectived", David Hamilton Williams gives us a minute, almost minute-by-minute, account, and he shows how the Prussian breakthrough into the French rear, at the moment the Old Guard was engaging Wellington's left, forced the French rout. He also gives us an account of the British army captain who, years after the battle, was entrusted with collecting oral histories of the battle from surviving officers, and this very British-centric material colored historical accounts to this day.

@@johnmcguigan7218 sorry, but that is nonsense. There was only one Prussian corps actually involved on the field of Waterloo, and Wellington had already broken the last French assault when it became fully engaged.Even Gneisenau,an anglophobe, admitted that the battle would have probably been a stalemate if the Prussians had not been coming through at Placenoit. French troops were diverted to deal with this attack, and were missing from the French final assault, but it is likely Wellington's troops would have broken it anyway.Wellington ensured that the battle would not be lost, the Prussian intervention ensured it would be a victory.Without Wellington's stand, the Prussians could not have beaten the French on their own,Ligny showed that.

Typical British propaganda. Where are the Dutch, German and Belgian troops? Where are the Prussians? British troops at Waterloo were only 25% (at best) of the allied army. But this movie and British historians make us believe that the British defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. In fact, as someone said, Waterloo is a GERMAN victory, not only because of the Prussian role, but also because the high number of German troops that composed Wellington´s Army. And the Dutch and Belgian soldiers that fought EXACTLY as hard and as long than the British that day (even forming squares) never have been recognized as they deserve. Common people don´t even know about their presence in the battle. What a shame.

I admire the common English people that took their small boats to help and bring home the defeated soldiers at Dunkirk, whith the Luftwaffe attaking everywhere. The British held the French at Waterloo for 2 days Without the British the prussians would have been crushed it was a joint effort. And as for the comment on Dunkirk you French can piss off. The French army spent the whole war retreating apart from the pocket around Dunkirk I have relatives who were in the British expeditionary force in France in 1939 and they say half of what they did was destroy abandoned French equipment after the French fled in such a disorderly manner. We didn’t have to fight your war for you and liberate France We could have sued for peace. We had the navy and the empire but that would have been wrong. Our involvement in the Second World War is one of the most selfless acts ever committed by a country. And now to the comment of disproportionate representation. The same could be said for DDay, there were more British and Canadian soldiers there than american yet you watch an American film you would think it was just Americans storming the beaches

@@davidw1634 you say "The British held the French at Waterloo for 2 days". False. You mean "The Allies". Because at Waterloo there were two armies that fought against Napoleon: the Prussian army under Blucher and the ALLIED ARMY (not "British) under Wellington. The Allied Army was half British and half Dutch, Belgian and German (from different states). And even the "British" part of it was in part composed of German units. As for WW 2, all I have to say is that the sea saved the British once again. As in 1805, Britain would have had no chance against an invading Army. Oh, and the Russians defeated Hitler. As they had defeated the real French Army in 1812/1814. Not the children and crippled French Army of 1815.

In reality btw the prussians won this battle. Not the british. I know hollywoods says other things. Historically the prussians fought the french and so they buyed the british time to fight at Quatre Bras only with a french corps. The rest of the french army fought at Ligny against the prussians. The prussiand retreated from this battlefield and now the french fokused on the british. But Ligny bought them the time they needed and the strengh to hold Quatre Bras. Against the whole army of france.. no chance. After this they outmaneuvered the french corps following them and crashed the flank of the napoleonic army at waterloo. They defeated the flank, the reserves so napoleon could not consolidate his forces and was also forced to attack with the old Guard to early. He was knewing the battle was lost. But he thought he can maybe crush the british before the prussians are crushing him and he sended the young guard to them and several other divisions. The prussians crushed them. Also the british only fought in Waterloo because they knew the prussians were coming. So at the end: The british were the anvil and the prussians the hammer of waterloo. Yes, the british fought really well at waterloo and gained huge casulties and the defeat of the old guard was great. But at the end this was only desperation of napoleon. He had lost before the old guard attacked. The prussians had overrun the french flank and young guard and cut of the retreat of the most of the french troops before the old guard was defeated. But in most movies and memorials of these battle the prussians are only a side note and nothing more. The prussians lost 7.000 men in waterloo. The british 15.000 during the whole day. But at the end.. napoleons defeated himself. He did not crush the british an 17th juni. Instead he visited injured soldiers. So he gave the british time to consolidate their troops and the prussians to outflank the french troops. He knew that speed is all. this was his tactic to block the prussians and british to consolidate. And then he makes a day break for visiting injured? Big mistake... He also knew about the manouver of the prussians, but he did not react because he thought its not possible for a retreating army to do so. If he had send Grochy to Wavre, the prussians could not reinforce the british (maybe only Bülows Corps.. maybe). And at the end he still outnumbered the allied forces but desided to throw away his best troops instead of retreating and looking for a new better battlefield. Or so play his genius and outmanouver them like in the past wars. So his army paniced after the prussians cut them off and were in a trap after the british defeated the old guard. Their was no retreat for them.
