Some of the first little melons might not take but eventually some will as long as they are being pollinated by bees or by hand pollinating. It is only necessary to hand pollinate if you are growing different varieties and want to make sure the seeds are pure from only one type of watermelons,you want to do a cross between two different kinds of watermelons or if you don't see any bees working the blooms in the morning.

They have both male and female flowers on the same vine and they need the pollen transferred from the male flowers to the female flowers to get watermelons. Thanks for the comment!

Cool video. Seems easy enough and I like that you labeled your crosses for later!

Thank you so much!!! I absolutely love watermelon, and last years crop, my first, only had 1 decent melon from 4 plants, and 2 small melons, all of which tasted good, but I was hoping for more =D I had no idea they had male and female flowers... and this will help me succeed now!!! Thanks!
@lakemarygardens11 жыл бұрын
Do nothing and you will have watermelon if you have bees pollinating them. If you don't see very many bees and you also see the little baby melons not growing and dropping off the vine then you may need to pollinate them. I pollinated to make some crosses between varieties as a experiment.
@lakemarygardens11 жыл бұрын
Not really because they have both male and female blooms on the same plant. The fluffy yellow pollen needs transferred from the male blooms to the open female blooms that have the tiny baby watermelons on them to get the watermelons to grow.
@lakemarygardens11 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are doing the right things. In time you will see the watermelons begin to grow.

Yes,the cross between a long vine and a dwarf resulted in a long vine F1. Then I got a percentage of dwarf and long vines in the F2. The updates are scattered through all my videos. I did put in a watermelon tag so my videos can be searched. My channel is a garden diary with a little bit of everything.

So, if I won't do anything ( pollinate it) I am not going to have any watermelons????
@hairynose65611 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I am hand pollinating because They are in a greenhouse, but I do see ants going from flower to flower on some days, but this morning I spotted many open female flower and no ants so I hand pollinated. Some of my plants are yellow with brown contour, I think this might be nutrient deficiency so will try that. I am always contemplating removing the greenhouse since I mostly put it there because it was too cold in the beginning but it might be too big change or they might grow better in.
@Pigearvet8 жыл бұрын
I chose Bark watermelon, Sweet Siberian and finally Cream of Saskatchewan. Short season smaller varieties suitable to our Canadian summers.

Thank you so much for response. I just look and didn't see any female flowers on my plants, only male. Is it normal? Is female flowers always grow later? Thank you again
@lakemarygardens11 жыл бұрын
Yes,that is normal. The male flowers appear first and then the female flowers follow. Just keep a eye on them to make sure the fruit grows after the female flowers begin to bloom.

@hairynose65611 жыл бұрын
when you are brushing the male flower onto the female flower where to you want to apply the pollen? Ideally does it have to go right in the middle (inside the middle part) I realized it is easy for the pollen to stick to the middle part of the female flower but does'nt stick very well on the rest

sorry for my ignorance.. i am very new to all of this. have a very healthy fast growing watermelon vine in the garden now, my first one!

if it rains after you hand pollenate will the pollen still be on the female plant
@lakemarygardens4 жыл бұрын
The only way to know for sure is if the watermelon takes and starts to grow. It is also normal for a few to drop off at first even if they are pollinated.
@lakemarygardens11 жыл бұрын
I don't know. Sometimes nature does weird things. Try doing some pollinating of you don't see bees working the blooms in the morning.

Can watermelon and pumpkin cross pollinate?
@luvvalot969510 жыл бұрын
Don't be too upset about pollination if you don't see honeybees, as long as you see some kind of bees. The little quarter inch long, tenth inch diameter green and blue orchard bees do a really great job. If you see them you know you're getting pollination.
@luvvalot969510 жыл бұрын
And the streptomycin sulfate fungicide does not hurt them or honey bees. Actually helps them. I have treated my honeybees with this for several years and they are always healthjier and stronger. I treat them when they are in a fussy mood or when their sting causes a white pus pocket to form in a couple hours,. That's a sign of bacterial infection and possible funguses too. Yes. Bees do get fungus infections. And that seems to affect them worse than most bacteria. Get rid of the fungus and most bacteria and they can fight off the rest including viruses.

***** Hi Karen, I am new to gardening and would like to grow my own fruits and vegetables in my backyard. What do watermelon pollinating and crossing do? Thank you.
@lakemarygardens10 жыл бұрын
I do this for a hobby. I get interesting variety in the offspring sometimes with very good quality worth repeating the cross and saving the seeds for future planting.

The F2 will show variations. The F1 may be good cross to repeat in the future if you get good results. They do this with tomatoes as well.

Beb sure that after afew days the blossom has fallen off, or else pull it off so the end can dry, or you will lose the little melon to blossom-end rot.
@luvvalot969510 жыл бұрын
And use streptomycin sulfate every couple weeks. It is the powder spray mix for fire blight in pears. works great on everything, funguses, wilt, mildew bacteria. use it on ALL vines, tomatos .etc.

Thanks for the tip. I did lose a few but I thought it did not take. I will watch for that. I did get a lot of melons and had to pull some off so they could grow to normal size.

***** You will know it's blossom end rot when the small melons turn black on both ends, stem and blossom end. and are still green on the outside in the middle. Just a slight touich and they fall off. It helps a lot letting the soil go dry during this time. water deep early morning once a week then let it go dry. Then watch out for high humidity and fog for long periods`. try not to water during those times, preferably on hot days only. Good luck and good harvest.!!!
