I really like how versatile his design is. When you first see him he’s like a kindly old grandpa. Strange looking, sure, but his roundness makes him seem more quirky than anything. Then, when his morality is revealed, all of those features that felt more like old-man traits and quirky ones become, well, monstrous.

One of the biggest strengths of Waternoose as with most other Pixar twist villains (the only real exceptions being Lotso and Evelyn) is that his good persona in the first half of the film is completely genuine and sincere. More modern twist villains (Hans being the most infamous example) have it so that their kind, friendlier personas when they first appear turn out to just be false fronts that don't represent what they're really like at all, and when the reveal happens they just abruptly turn into completely different characters at the last minute. Whereas Waternoose isn't _faking_ his kind, grandfatherly demeanour at the start, and he genuinely does have a good relationship with Mike, Sulley and his other employees. Which only makes it more shocking and tragic that he's still willing to commit such terrible actions and even double-cross and potentially kill the monsters he cares about despite this. When the twist happens, we're not seeing the "real" Waternoose, we're just seeing a different side to him that was hiding there in plain sight the whole time.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Hell, he even lays out his motivation in front of Sully. On a surface level, it's understandable why he wants to keep the company afloat. I think Robert McKee said it best when "True character is revealed in the choices a [person] makes under pressure".

Indeed, plus, it’s not just a matter of keeping his legacy in order just to gain more money. Monsters Inc got a huge responsibility in the monster world : it is the principal institution that generates power throughout Monstropolis, it’s the balance of their entire world who is put in danger. He said it himself, it’s not a matter of being good or bad, he simply have no choice, monsters are not scary enough anymore and the scream crisis will only get worst. Even Sully, after Waternoose arrest, can only agree with that statement.

The real "villain" was the lack of informations about children and how else can they produce energy without having to be scared.

Honestly wish they figured out that laughs make more energy than screams and told spider boi about it and he rejects it as it would go against the old way. We see how it goes in the tv show where they try everything to make sure people don't see the benefits of laughter with the other companies disavowing laugh energy and even stealing it. It's actually very deep for a Disney plus show

I imagine things will get worse in season 3. Johnny's company, ScareCo, was also getting low on Scare Power. Waternoose was right. scaring isn't enough anymore. that's why Johnny started to steal Laugh Power from Monsters INC. Now that they've proven Laugh Power is more effective, this could have negative effects on the monster world. they have an entire school to teach monsters how to scare kids properly. with Scare Power fading away, what's going to happen to the schools? yes, they *could* convert to teaching laughs too, but what about the monsters too scary to make kids laugh? there's going to be hundreds, if not thousands of monsters like Tyler who wanted to be Scarers, only to be told that Scare Power is fading away. then there's the other factories that still use Scare Power. what are they going to do? I imagine their Scare Power is failing too if Monsters INC and ScareCo were going under. I have a lot of questions how Laugh Power is going to change the monster world now that it has been proven and that Scare Power is going obsolete.

Monsters Inc is one of few favorite Pixar movies I enjoyed since I was a kid. Back then I thought of Randall and Mr. Waternoose are the primary antagonists that plots to kidnapping children instead providing more screams. But as I got older, I realized that corporate greed, economic collapse, the setbacks that turns the company into a business failure, and the necessity of of doing anything to keep your company from going under adds in the layer of complexity to Waternoose himself. The thing I think Pixar and Disney are lacking nowadays is the adding subtle message of real world themes within a fictional story like Monsters Inc, and what we need them to be brought back.

You have to give the movie some some credit. As despite having such a heinous plan, Waternoose still acknowledges Sully for all he's done. A lesser movie would simply have him throw that all away straight up, and this happen: (When it's revealed that Waternoose is working with Randall) Sully: But sir....no. You were my mentor. Waternoose: Open the door, Randall. (Starts forcing both Sully and Mike in) Sully: I looked to you for help! Waternoose: THAT WHAT YOUR MISTAKE! But it's a good thing that it didn't go that route. As Waternoose didn't want this to be anything personal, and calls out Randall for causing such an alter to the plan and for believing that Sully got want he deserved.

Waternoose was a great twist villain. With Randall, we knew from the beginning that he was going to turn out to be a bad guy, but we never saw it coming with Waternoose. At the same time, Pixar does a great job of planting little clues about his true nature leading up to the big reveal. Waternoose is like Walter White, believing that if he has a "good" end goal, any means he uses to reach it are justifiable. His actions are immoral but his reasons for doing them are totally understandable which really does make him a tragic villain.

Realtalk, Waternoose was a twist villain done right. Foreshadowing, motive, reveal, the fact he was supportive but not necessarily helpful to the heroes, straight-up expressing regret and irritation in being forced to screw them over, he definitely gets a pass not just because he was arguably Disney's first twist villain. Which made trying Waternoose again 15 years later feel so much less impactful

The scene where they tried to test the machine on Boo is a perfect way to illustrate the characterization of Waternoose and Randall. When the extractor start to get closer to Boo, Waternoose watch with anticipation, he doesn’t particularly enjoy seeing a kid being tortured, he only want to be sure that it’s the only way to save the company, but overall he keeps a neutral expression. Meanwhile, Randall is smiling at the simple idea of killing a child, he is clearly enjoying the moment even tough it’s still haven’t happen yet. Randall is the true villain and a sociopath while Waternoose is cruel but act under pressure and out of desperation.

Waternooses is like that old grandpa you like seeing but pray he doesn't have a skeleton in his closet. Throughout the film you can get his motive on regarding how important this factory is; along with all the pressure in making sure Monsters have an endless energy as a means to continue the whole cycle of Monsters scare kids, kids screams in fear, that fear becomes energy, Monsters can live another day with electricity in their homes. When this film came out, and it was only that for a good while, it made you wonder if the monsters in that universe ever study scaring adults or finding alternate energy fuels. It makes sense that beforehand, none of them knew about laughter having more energy than screams, and for a good while all monsters assume humans to be toxic. The very moment he decided to secretly work with Randel, it truly became a twist as well as heartbreaking that he would slowly go to the very length of saying he would rather kidnap kids if it means to keep this company alive. Not rationalizing that he would be harming kids, possibly killing them just so he can have the very endless energy source to not have this energy crisis that they are currently dealing with. In the end, while we never get to see his thoughts of what happened to the company after it turns from screams into laughter. Would Waternoose approve of laughter if someone told him a better energy source or would he reject it?

Of course Waternoose is going to be bitter after being arrested, but I wonder if he ever takes some comfort in knowing that his company didn't die and is still the primary energy provider for the city. That was his ultimate goal after all, and even though it succeeded in a completely different matter without his involvement, it still reached the same end goal. Maybe he even had a good laugh when Worthington was sent to the same cell since Monsters Inc outlasted Fearco.
@Koopalingfan

That was so good. Henry J Waternoose III is such a unique villain and Pixar’s best twist villain. Also one of my favorite villains along with Randall. It’s because his motivations are not out of greed it’s out of desperation of saving the company and saving society from a blackout, but just did it the wrong way. Yes even though they believed human children were toxic, they were still aware they have lives. It’s interesting that he still cared about Sully and Mike and had some remorse betraying them. Even defending Sully from Randall. But probably still willing to frame Sully and Mike for the crime by having them and probably also Randall arrested by the CDA. If he returns if there’s a season 3. He should be voiced by Kelsey Grammer and maybe he should be like Yokai from Big Hero 6 Tv Series.

You should do a Jack Jack video next. The youngest member of the Parr family has more potential than Dash and Violet since has 17 powers. While it is exciting to see what he can do when he gets older, but what if your loved one decent to evil without being challenged and disciplined? And what if there is a dimension where the heroes sees themselves as their own worst enemies? I think having a grown up Jack Jack would be a perfect villain for Incredibles 3.

Totally agree and Waternoose did in some extent regret banishing Sully and Mike and even defended Sully from Randall. I’m pretty sure Waternoose wouldn’t approve of Randall using the scream extractor on Mike. It’s also Implied Randall was planning on backstabbing Waternoose by taking over as CEO and probably would’ve treated Sully like how he treated Fungus. Just to show he’s number one. I do think Randall partly did to save the company and society from a blackout, but I agree mostly just to be number one.
