Hi Everyone. Happy 2021! In this video, we will unbox and test Google Pixel 5. Let's take a closer look at the phone's design.
The Pixel 5 got a housing made of aluminum instead of glass. The phone is light and thin, the screen is smooth.
It weighs 151g and has a flexible OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The 6-inch screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6, just like the Pixel 4a.
There's no headphone jack on the Pixel 5 instead of one Type-C connector at the bottom.
The phone comes with a SIM tool, USB Quick Transfer adapter, 18W fast charge adapter, and a cable.
Google Pixel 5 features 4080mAh battery cell. Google said it can last up to 48 hours in extreme battery saver condition when you really need it.
Google Pixel 5 supports wireless charger and reverse wireless charging. What's more? Pixel 5 is rated IP68 water resistance.
Lets begin the waterproof test. There is oleophobic layer on the screen, water droplets slide quickly across the screen.
Then we put it into a 20cm water tank for about 12mins, Pixel 5 worked fine.
We also prepared 1.5m tubular water column. Do you think it can handle in 30 minutes?

Google Pixel 5 stayed under 1.5 meters of water for half-hour without a single bubble come out.
We took it out of the water and check everything was normal, Pixel 5 work great.
Let's teardown and check inside.
Here we removed the battery cover, no water drops were found.
Keep disassembling the phone, no water intake, no water droplets. Pretty cool!

I went swimming in the pool an hour ago and forgot my Pixel 5 was in my pocket. I was swimming for about 35 minutes. Phone worked fine. USB disabled due to Pixel detecting water in port. 24 min later phone says USB enabled b/c it no longer detects it wet. Wow

I'd like to see how a phone's water resistance changes with normal use.... e.g. it's been dropped a few times, the seals have aged a few years, etc. Maybe request subscribers ready to upgrade to send in old phones for testing. Possibly get some used phones. Great content!

I actually opened my Pixel 5 to swap out a defective camera and the water sealing adhesive was quite difficult to get past. I will say this a heat gun helped to open and seal my phone back and I didn't lose any water resistance.

I've been watching your KZbin channel, Wit Rigs, for a while now and have been impressed by how in-depth, systematic, and thorough your process is for testing the IP67/IP68 ratings on phones. Along the same lines, I have been working on an Android app called Water Resistance Tester (available on the Play Store), which lets everyday people run a test on their phones to verify whether their water resistance seals are still intact or not. Understanding that the seals are not permanent and can wear away over time, or can be compromised by repair technicians, I created this app to help people with all of those situations - it's a form of reassurance and peace of mind that you know your seals are still good, and you can test it in a risk-free way. Test as often as you'd like. My goal with this is to improve the industry as a whole, and keep everyone (phone manufacturers, repair shops) honest, and make it as easy as possible for end-users to verify they got what they paid for. I think it would be valuable if you guys could try out the app and possibly even have it incorporated as part of your test process.

For those testing the limits with their phone's waterproof, I highly recommend not trying to charge the phone any time soon after doing water dunks. It's better safe than sorry, you don't want to break your phone and lose all your data. (Make backups too!)

Had my pixel 5 for 6 months, had it in my pocket and got water spilled on me, next day was dead. Went to have warranty repair done, and they said there was water in the phone, sorry about your luck. Google basically said screw you your on your own

I had a similar experience with a Pixel 4, and the phone is not coming back to life after extensive drying. I've generally had better luck with reviving non-water-resistant phones than the IP-rated ones of late.
