I’ve never heard an English version of this that does justice to the poetry but also the playfulness of the Tom and Elis original. Well done.

The power behind this song , with all it brings , so simple but reaches levels deep within the SOUL , from the joy to the PAIN of LIFE , but how with all that HAPPENS to us as well as every form of LIFE here , what we LIVE is PRICELESS and maybe if we looked at each as Priceless we would cause less Harm , show more respect for each other as well as the PLANET , we were never a COLOR but rather BEINGS with so much BEAUTY to SHARE , as I write this my eyes fill with tears , Humanity needs to GROW UP , the only POLITICS that matter are the Politics of LOVE , Imagine THAT

A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, it is life, it's the sun It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, a fox in the brush A knot in the wood, the song of a thrush The wood of the wind, a cliff, a fall A scratch, a lump, it is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, it's the end of the slope It's a beam it's a void, it's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the end of the strain The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, the flesh and the bone The beat of the road, a slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, a silvery glow A fight, a bet the fange of a bow The bed of the well, the end of the line The dismay in the face, it's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, a point, a nail A drip, a drop, the end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light The sound of a shot in the dead of the night A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, it's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, the body in bed And the car that got stuck, it's the mud, it's the mud A float, a drift, a flight, a wing A hawk, a quail, the promise of spring And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone A snake, a stick, it is John, it is Joe It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, a bee, a bite A blink, a buzzard, a sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, a sting a pain A snail, a riddle, a wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the river talks of the waters of March It's the promise of life in your heart A stick, a stone, the end of the road The rest of a stump, a lonesome road A sliver of glass, a life, the sun A knife, a death, the end of the run And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the end of all strain, it's the joy in your heart

I am an American who lived in Rio when this song landed #1 in ‘74 I think? My favorite song of all time. Reminds me of my mom. Anyway I am very close to a friend of mine who’s Brazilian and a singer and who lives out here in the US. I said she should do a version in English and out it on KZbin a couple months back. I showed her your video and she said no I don’t need to they encompassed exactly what Jobim would’ve wanted. Cheers to that!!!

This song is a masterpiece of world music, either because of its melody, the harmony that accompanies the senses of the lyrics or the lyric itself. I don't see any major problems in the absence of the quote to the song's author (Tom Jobim), because in fact, I think that few people who really matter are unaware of this fact. One problem, if any, is in the emotional environment of the interpretation. In their version, this song becomes a "happy song" and, in a way, this way of interpreting loses some of the meaning of the lyrics. It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun This is not very happy. The night with its darkness, death and weapons are not happy things. Likewise, several passages of the letter alternate between pleasant and unpleasant things. It is about talking about life itself, about the alternation and coincidence between good and evil, happiness and sadness, violence and calm. Life, according to Tom Jobim and also according to most sensible human beings, is neither happy nor sad, and the grace of life is just that. To be happy is to hear a thrush singing (or Matita Pereira, in the original Brazilian version) and to be unhappy is to reach to the end a path of sticks and stones. It was Tom Jobim himself who wrote the lyrics in English as well, but he confessed that he had difficulties in adapting Brazilian feelings to North Americans. In the philosophy of the song, there is a life that is worth living, not because it is made only of good and happy things, but because it alternates and brings together sadness and happiness. Life is worth living simply because it is as it is. In this version, many heavier chords of the harmony were suppressed to generate a happier emotional environment and in a way, when composing the clip, Carlos Cabrera holds a gun as if he were playing, doing something pleasurable. Given the original harmony of the song, this scene would be impossible. Death and weapons are parts of life, but not pleasant parts of it. That's why all the previous harmonies in this song use heavier chords in this type of passage. The tone of the interpretation gains more syncopated notes that accompany the first letters of linguopalatical or bilabial sounds. These are sounds that must have the characteristic of a slap, which would be relieved by softer sounds in other verses that follow. Perhaps, it is impossible for an American to understand that there is grace in a life that alternates pain and joy, perhaps it is impossible for them to understand that it is not possible to be happy with death or weapons, but that it is possible to understand the greatness of a life that has it all. Maybe it's just a simple cultural difference, maybe they understand something that I don't understand and that's why they recorded this song as if it were a happy song. Who knows? Note that I did not say that March water is an unfortunate song, on the contrary, it is a song that celebrates life in all its dimensions and that is why it is magnificent. There is a general feeling of optimism in the song, but this optimism does not depend on whether we are happy or sad, but simply on being alive. When Tom and Elis were recorded, we were not happy and relieved, we were perplexed by the complexity and wonder that is life.

I had never heard the English version. The lyrics are pretty pretty, if that's not too redundant. In Portuguese it goes something like this: "It's the March rains, closing the summer, it's a promise of life in your heart." Because it rains in parts of Brazil in March, end of summer, and Tom Jobim thought it was poetic, even with the yearly floods and landslides. ;) Thanks for introducing me to this version in your absolutely poetic interpretation.
@diamante97218 жыл бұрын
antiantipoda foi o tom jobim que criou a versão em ingles, se colocasse a tradução literal não ia ter ritmo
@antiantipoda8 жыл бұрын
