After he is ripped off by a Drifter (Chaim Girafi), the Mariner (Kevin Costner) destroys the man's mast, leaving him adrift for the Smokers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Widely considered to be an expensive failure, Waterworld was an epic vehicle for Kevin Costner, who starred in and co-produced the film, with his friend Kevin Reynolds as director. It was based on a 1986 screenplay by Peter Rader and cost an estimated $235 million, more than any film in history up to that time. Costner eventually fired Reynolds and directed the last few scenes himself. The story was filmed in Hawaii, using several artificial islands, and is set in an apocalyptic future, after global warming has melted the polar ice caps and flooded civilization. The Mariner (Costner) is one of the human beings who has adapted by growing gills. The survivalist lives on a boat on which he is growing a precious tomato plant. He tries to sell the plant and its dirt to the residents of an artificial island built of industrial waste. They imprison him when they discover that he's a mutant with gills. But the island is attacked by the Smokers, a group of oil-guzzling raiders on jet skis headed by the Deacon (Dennis Hopper). The Mariner escapes with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and her daughter Enola (Tina Majorino). Back at sea, the Smokers repeatedly attack, using planes and boats, until they kidnap Enola. Enola's back is tattooed with a map showing how to get to Dryland, the last unflooded area on Earth. But Deacon, who needs to get to Dryland to replenish the Smokers' oil supply, can't immediately decipher it.

Bunch of reasons. In its day, it was the most expensive film ever made, with a budget that started at $100M-the cost of the then current record holder, True Lies, released the year before; Waterworld is still the 12th most expensive ever-but then shot way up to $172M. Shooting was set for 96 days, which was extremely long, but with all that went wrong through the entire production, it went to 157 days. They started filming before the script was even finished. When the large number of cast and crew arrived at the atoll set in Hawaii, they learned there were no bathrooms, so they had to flag down boats to ferry them to a barge where portable toilets had been brought in. Production messes like that happened the whole time. Costner reluctantly brought in a director someone wanted him to use, and then fought with him the entire time over everything, and that guy (Kevin Reynolds) eventually quit, and Costner ended up for weeks or months stuck in an editing booth doing a ton of the work himself, which he didn't want to do. There were injuries, a tsunami threat, and a ton more - just look it up, and you'll find more and more problems across many different articles from that year (1995). The thing is, people knew about this. It was being reported on throughout the filming. I was a kid, but I still remembered the news dubbing it "Fishtar," likening it to the famous box office flop, "Ishtar," and it also gained the nickname "Kevin's Gate," after a flop so bad ("Heaven's Gate") it lead to a bunch of executive dismissals, and the selling of United Artists, which was the end of its run as an independent studio (it merged with MGM to form MGM/UA). I remember going to see it in the theater as a kid with a bunch of negative press in my head. Everyone was making fun of it, because it was so insanely overpriced and took so long to be finished. That hurt its reception at the time. Now you can just watch it and think "Wow, this is fun!" At the time, everyone was watching the cheesy acting, the slow, clunky story, etc., very critically, thinking "This is what took way more money, and more time, than any other movie in the history of movies?" All these years later, despite liking the film, the complete mess of a production, and the insane (for the time) budget are the first things I think of when I hear "Waterworld," because of the months of sketchy press, and schoolyard jokes about it, even before it was released.

Waterworld is epic entertainment. Some great cinematography and action scenes. If you don't like it go watch Schindler's list or Gone with the wind, they are also epic but in a different way. Waterworld has some slick action and some great acting scenes. Must have been a difficult movie to make Come on man you got to love Dennis Hopper even though he's the bad guy. @@applescruff1969 well few things 1) the boats used were ORMA 60 class trimarans (not catamarans). These are perfectly adaptable for one man operations and were, in fact, used as a class for single-sailor transoceanic races. If the ones used for filming were adapted that is another thing. It takes an expirienced sailor to operate one alone, and for safety they probably didn't want to do this. 2) Unfortunately, all the gizmos and crancks were just for show, the film crew used two boats, one with them and one that could actually sail...
