I saw her perform with Watkins Family Hour in Newport. She did the same thing at that concert. She likes sitting on the floor next to the piano. She is a gift! It was a very special concert.

The way Sara plays backup fiddle is amazing. Like obviously her solos are awesome but also her fills and the way she fades in and out of the texture and her general sense of phrasing...I've watched this video so many times just trying to imitate that. It's like the instrument is an extension of her voice, she just knows how to work it

I love every single moment here. Just a magical blend from Sean and Sara, plus the other musicians were killing it, and then Fiona Apple??? Couldn't get better!

I keep coming back to this session. Not only does Tiny Desk do a great job recording, you would be hard pressed to find a higher quality mix of musical talent presenting an old-time song set with such nuanced perfection.

First time hearing them, and I've watched the first track 10 times. Shes so melodic with little touches without overdoing anything or even coming close. So great!

When the set started I thought to myself that piano player sure looks like Benmont Tench but there's no way... When they introduced him I nearly fell out of my seat! With an all-star cast and a fantastic set this has become one of my favorite Tiny Desks shows yet - keep up the great work!

My 2-year-old just spent half an hour directing me to this, apparently his favorite, rendition of In the Pines. He described it by the howling chorus! Thank you all so much. This is terrific stuff.

There's something just so amazing and unique about Sara's voice. It's genuine, and vulnerable, and real. Then there's also her incredible songwriting...

Holy wowzas!!! What a line-up! I was super happy to see and hear Sara Watkins, then you peel the layers away and boom, there's Benmont Tench tickling the ivories, then Fiona Apple pops out! I love everything about this! Can't stop listening to Steal Your Heart Away. I love their rendition of the Grateful Dead's Brokedown Palace. Think I saw that on a different performance but if you've never heard Watkins Family Hour's Brokedown Palace, do yourself a favor and look it up. What a cool band this is.

So fantastic to see Sebastian Steinberg and Fiona Apple with Watkins Family Hour! Two artists that I have loved for a long, long time. While Apple is certainly a household name, Steinberg might not be as easily recognized by some. For those curious, he was a member of Soul Coughing ;)

+skyzefawlun I had not made the connection between Sebastian and Soul Coughing, thanks for that! I still play a full SC list every month or so, loved those guys... such fun music. The people at the office used to look at me kinda funny when I played SC there, lol!

@@saraschroeder6374 Thank you for reminding me of this gem! I don't think I had listened to this since I wrote that comment 9 years ago. Not sure if you heard, but Soul Coughing just had their first tour in like 25 years very recently! I wasn't able to get out of working the night they were in town, so sadly missed them, but there are some videos of the shows, including a pretty solid full set of them at The Filmore in SF! from 3 weeks ago!

The Watkins Siblings and Fiona and other assembled personnel played outdoors at Lincoln Center in NYC this summer. Their project was reenacting Dylan's album "Highway 61 Revisted."
