Watkins Glen Classic Released - New 1960s Track - Assetto Corsa

Finally an updated version of the East-Coast classic, Watkins Glen. This beautiful rendition of the circuit is set in the late 50s/early 60s, right after the street circuit was abandoned and the GP layout was first created. Sergio Loro of F3 Classic Tracks has done a wonderful job bringing it to life, and the track itself has more character than you could imagine. A great version of this circuit has been missing for a long time, most versions out there started as conversion of the 1998 GPL rendition. A great circuit for all types of classic cars, I know I will be logging many miles here in the future.

I lost my aunt last year but she retired from a career in public relations from the Corning Museum of Glass. Since they were majority owners of The Glen we had Pitroof seats in the Corning box for most events. This meant that during the mid to late '80s I was camping in the infield for the Camel GT, Bud at the Glen, Serengeti Classic. Everything about this track means a whole lot more actually having 'grown up' there.

Watkins Glen was the track my dad and I used to hotlap against each other in the 2000s Always chasing the old man’s times! I think this circuit more than any other is responsible for my adoration of the 60s f1 cars, the eagle, and this track in particular, and no other place in simracing fills me with such good memories. He’d have absolutely loved your channel, as do I. Thanks for another great vid! And showcasing a track I might have missed otherwise

Excellent! I saw this mod last night on Casual Sim Racer's channel. You have added to my knowledge (as always) and helped me match this layout with the 1970s version that I am more used to. I had the pleasure to drive the original "through the town" Watkins Glen course a few years ago, as part of the Vintage Racing Festival that is held at the Glen every fall. Definitely worth attending if you love vintage racing.

This is done so nice. Thanks. I live about an hour from the track. Always wondered what it was like in the 60s before they lengthened it. Every time I hear about a new F 1 event I get that old pang, like a lost lover, for this track. They will never run F1 here again. The place needs a huge hotel built on the site to cater to modern teams needs. Watkins is a quaint town steeped in history. I love the place. But it’s time warp appeal is also what holds it back to modern F1. They spent huge money upgrading the safety to meet the demands of Indy Car and NASCAR over the past 20 years. It’s FIA class two now. Way more safe than in the seventies. But the Last Indy Car race was a bomb. People just didn’t show up like the old days. It looked like an SCCA club race. To get the track to F1 status could be done with a few more runoff area work and overhauling the pit entrance and ditching the dodgy pit wall bit at the entrance. But without the people facilities the new tracks have, I guess it’s just a pipe dream.

Thanks for posting this. I had the good fortune to drive on this track in the early 2000's in a couple of high speed driving events in the slightly modified '96 Corvette Grand Sport I used to own. Even though it wasn't real racing, it gave me an appreciation for the great layout and condition of the track. I was doing close to 140 at 6,500 rpm in 4th (on a 6-speed) just before the bus stop and sweeper. I can't imagine how fast things happen in a real racer. When ISC took over the facility they did a lot of upgrades to accommodate Indy and NASCAR events. I don't think the original circuit depicted here would have been nearly as much fun. The old road/street circuit was fun to drive on during off-track times.

Cool look into the past. Love Watkins Glen! The uphill esses are tight even in a street car. I'm surprised every time when drivers go two wide through that section. Elevation change is drastic at The Glen too.

Would love to see a new version of the original street/road track that was used in the late 40s and early 50s as well. Most of the original roads still remain too so it might be slightly easier to make a reconstruction. There is a suprising amount of video of it too

This looks really nice. I remember back in the day i played some racing game on PC that was a demo version and had this track with haybales for barriers, and i always picked a ford-lotus. Cant remember the name of the game for the life of me though.

The big crest into the braking zone, throwing you into the loop is one of GPL's best/worst places (I crash most often when trying to brake slowly/carefully!) - I'm gutted to find out it never existed! Edit: that being said, I still think the GPL pit straight was far more accurate - see ["Lorenzo Bandini Jim Clark Richie Ginther Jack Editorial Stock Photo - Stock Image"] on shutterstock. Maybe this new track version has overcompensated - to me, photos show the pit straight being wide enough for 6, if not 7 '60s f1 cars side by side along most of its length (or 8-10 if you count the extra tarmac on the exit of the final turn!), with the first turn narrowing to 4-5 abreast. The esses look right though - the GPL Esses and following straight are way too wide and have armco where there was none. Edit2: I've just looked at the GPL version again, and judging by photos, I think the elevation profile of the entry to the loop is probably somewhere between GPL and this version. (though the new version's width is probably right.) The actual loop path/profile is better represented in this new track.

Isn't this Cobra mod the one they adapted into the game as official content? Since 2015 there have been quite a few updates to the tyre model so this mod should handle quite differently. Other than that thanks for the heads-up of this great track. Didn't really follow Loro's work as of late. Based on the video this is a real gem.

There is a 289 physics pack available too, although I haven't gotten it to work yet. Honestly the 427 is a bit much for me, and especially on this track! More suited to Daytona or old version of Sebring.

From what I can tell, the USRRC used that first chicane in some years, but even they abandoned it in their last season (1968) in favor of the unmitigated Carousel. As seen with Jacarepagua as well, we really are spoiled with what pass for "curbs" at racetracks nowadays. It's interesting to see the interpretation of those last few corners, because I don't think any of the renders of this version of the Glen quite match each other, and frankly, there's quite a bit of variation in the track maps you find as well. Can you imagine a full field, including Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s, plus the little GTs, going around this iteration of the Glen in 1970? That would be nuts. There were also a few nasty accidents in those final few corners. i think Graham Hill had a lucky escape there in the late '60s. I sure hope that 427 thumper has plenty of torque. Fastest lap was ~108 mph average, so pretty quick for such a short course, and in a rather big and heavy GT car for the time.

It was like a short track road course. Lap times really low compared to other major tracks of the time. I agree that the modern version added a ton more character to this version which is really rare. Not often that when a major reconfiguration made a track "better". The only track that I can come up with on the top of my head just now that went through a major reconfiguration but did not make the track "better" is Hockenheimring. Yes, the track is safer, modern and has some great racing, but it lost its charm when they took away the very long straights in the forest.

Tilke also got his hands on Fuji, and like Hockenheim, it wasn't for the better. Another track that got a major reconfiguration that didn't necessarily make it "worse", was Laguna Seca. With that one, it's harder to say; it's a shame that sequence of fast corners to start the lap isn't there like it used to be, but the "infield" section they put in for 1988 certainly isn't "bad".

This circuit looks uncomfortably small and looking at old pictures, it's really hard to imagine it being quite THIS narrow. There are pictures from 1967 with F1 cars running 3 wide with room for four. Did they widen it sometime in the early 60s? Theres a picture from nearly the same angle as @19:43... and it just looks at least another car width wide. A Mazda Miata has a 59 inch track width, Shelby Cobra is 68 inch width. Lotus 49 is 60 inches wide. So these ARE bigger... but it seems like it's a little off. Its incredibly gorgeous, though. THis is exactly the kind of content I want... Just dont know what to make of the claustrophobia.

Next to Monaco, old Spa, and the Monza 10k circuit, the Glen in its 1956-70 form doesn't stand out so much. I think it was Carroll Shelby who said that a lap at VIR was worth 10 at the Glen. Now, presumably, the 1971 reconfiguration changed that sentiment.

One of my fave places to race in GPL... It seems like GPL tracks have exaggerated elevation changes compared to other sims (see Mosport), is that true?

They didn't have laser scanning, lidar, or google earth satellite data back in 1998, so they modeled the tracks on what little video they had. They definitely used their imagination in places.

Mosport isnt as exaggerated as much as you might think. But I would love a version like this... super accurate to the time. And like Watkins, Mosport hasn't changed much since 1967. The only change I can think of is the shaving down of the ridge on the back straight to prevent flipping and a slight change to the hairpin but that's it. It's one of the only tracks that hasn't been majorly altered from that era

except for Zandvoort, most of GPL original tracks are totally off in terms of layout and altitudes, i suppost they used all what they get back on those days, i started to edit tracks back on 2003, first pick was Vallelunga, i could not find out a single image of that track, trust me, now we are in heaven in terms of info, hundreds of photos, pieces of onboard laps, high res time-period aerial pics, videos, you can even go back ot the 30's and make a decent rendition of any track!!

Hey Andy, glad you enjoy the videos! These videos are for track and cars available for PC simulations. Most of them are free but some of them cost a small amount of money or donation. Unfortunately I do not think there is anything quite like this available on the PS3. In order to race what you are seeing here you would need a mid to high-end gaming PC, the simulator Assetto Corsa and the downloads I have listed in the description of the video. I hope this helps!

Then I tried direct link to the aerial view of WGI that I rendered from Google Earth Studio. That got taken down as well. So anyway it's on my channel if you're interested. All my orbit views are one minute long, for sitting and enjoying the relaxing view for hours on end I recommend Looper for KZbin.
