My favorite Battleship! BB-55 USS North Carolina ...... 24 August 1942... “The Enterprise wants to know if we’re on fire.” “On Fire?, tell them NO, it’s just our guns smoking, guess they never saw this much firepower before!”

My father was at Pearl Harbor on his ship, the USS Phoenix (CL-46), on the morning of December 7th. The first assignment his ship received was as escort on the convoy run from San Francisco to Sydney, or perhaps it was Melbourne. At any rate, the scuttlebutt one night was that the convoy was going to be intercepted by a Japanese surface force. When Dad got up the next morning, he looked off the starboard beam and there steaming about a mile or so away was the North Carolina. Dad said they all slept a whole lot easier that night, knowing they were under the protection of her 16-inch main battery.

Back in 1990's and 1980's i did a lot of work on USS NORTH CAROLINA there were compartments that were not opened since she was mothballed, in one they found 25 20mm anti-air craft guns still in cases and packing grease.

I only wish that the State of Washington had had the gumption to save the USS Washington battleship, the way that the great state of North Carolina had saved their namesake.

My mother took me to see her.Because our uncle was in the navy.During the war the things he seen.He loaded an antiaircraft gun while some else fired it.Any way being 9 years old at the time. The shells from the main guns where bigger than me.I had never seen armor so thick.I recalled telling my grand parents about the ship.I said"If you got hit with one of those big shells. There would be need for funeral because there would be nothing left. But a big smoking hole in the ground.

I've often wondered why the Washington wasn't saved. It's almost like it was a numbers game.....USS Texas is really the one who is blessed more than any. The only holdover that still exists from the WW1 Dreadnought era. And more numbers games......It seems as though the numbers of saving increased by 2's for every class AFTER the North Carolina. You had only 1 ship saved from the North Carolina Class (1 out of 2) You had 2 ships saved from the newer South Dakota Class (2 out of 4) and then you had all 4 ships saved from the Iowa class (4 out of 4). Really interesting how all that worked out. Personally, I wish the Great State of Hawaii had the funding to save the Pennsylvania. (What the heck....Why didn't the State of Pennsylvania save her????? ) I suppose all this was ultimately in the US Navy's hands....since they chose to sink here as one of the targets at Kwajalein Atoll. Still...... It would have been a immeasurable gift to the Nation had the Navy chosen to do so..... to have a fully intact sister ship to the Arizona to tour at Pearl Harbor....That in itself would have been the greatest gift of all.

It’s amazing any were saved, the Enterprise not being saved was insane, it was at Midway, and made it thru the war, unforgivable.

Watch at 21:15, how close was the NC to Mt Surabachi? Looks like just 200 yds or less to me.. man oh man..... Now that's support. That mt was bristling with artillery and anti-Naval guns. I cant get over that picture.

In testament to the fine crew of The USS NC, when she was hit by that torpedo that ripped a 35 foot hole in her port bow, they recovered the list and damage within 6 minutes. She stayed in the fight, and never lost speed, or her place defending the Carrier, USS Hornet.

People like to throw around that “most powerful battleship” when launched line. I’ve heard the same said about Bismarck, Iowa, Texas etc. I think it’s a stretch with NC. “Powerful” is subjective and is the combination and balance of speed, firepower, and armor. She was objectively not the fastest or best protected battleship when launched. Even if we take powerful to mean pure firepower, Nelson and Rodney match her there and had been around for 15 years already. So I guess tying for most heavily armed means “most powerful” here…. She was also definitely not the biggest / most powerful battleship in the world in July 1942 as mentioned in the vid. Tirpitz was bigger. Yamato was also commissioned by then and was bigger and definitely more powerful. No disrespect though, love the NC. Visited her about 10 years ago.
