If you were my teacher back in good school two things would have been different. 1. I would have had better grades because I understand you unlike my teachers. 2. I would actually have enjoyed what I was learning.

That's because this guy knows some much things he can always track down a reference of something you like , creating a bond between you and the subject , that's what interest means.

This took an hour in our school to learn this. But Professor Dave what miracle you did in just 6minutes. Wow! Congratulations!

I like the Southern California analogies to teach science. His videos reminds me of the Offspring lead singer. Punk rock musician Dr. Dexter Holland, molecular biologist Ph.D. USC. Liked.

In waves, what is the force that makes the wave come back to its equilibrium point?

The energy of a wave is related to the amplitud. What about the relation between energy and frequency of a wave?
@whichri79
@whichri79 3 жыл бұрын
shorter wavelength relates to higher frequency, which relates to higher energy

Sugar! That checking comprehension really woke me up and made me think! Good tactics. Well played sir. (P.s. I stupidly forgot one answer. Wavelength. And that was the easiest one too!)

have a doubt sir. In wave propagation water or sound , how individual particle vibrations are transmitted from particle to particle in the direction of wave propagation? There are gaps between particles in solids, liquids and gases. Is this not against principle of locality?

I learned frequency's symbol as f in school though and v as speed. I'm confused..
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 6 жыл бұрын
yep v is velocity, the greek letter nu is frequency but it looks just like a v. some people use f for frequency and that's fine too.

so those bother me a little bit, they're taking radio waves and translating them into sound, just like we do with radio transmissions, so it's not literal sound which makes them very misleading, it's clickbait more or less

Thank you. So the properties of waves doing experiments with water are the same with electromagnetic waves or any kind of waves? I mean if one studies water waves they actually have the same properties as any kind of waves? I am sorry if this sounds stupid...
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 5 жыл бұрын
well some properties yes, like wavelength, frequency, amplitude, etc. but there are major differences like the way light does not need a medium while mechanical waves do.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains Thank you for the fast response. Could it be that the vacuum is a medium in itself like a "quantum like medium" were energy can travel? because it is hard to understand a wave moving without a medium.
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 5 жыл бұрын
hard to say! i've heard the electromagnetic field itself operates as a medium, or simply that it doesn't require one, i don't know enough about the physics behind it. but it's possible.

This video was incredibly helpful! But I have a question. You mentioned that sound does not travel in space but how come in clips and recordings from space there’s sound? Like ‘one small step for man....’ is it because of the helmets trapping air? Or is there another reason?
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 6 жыл бұрын
anytime you hear sound in space in a movie it's scientifically inaccurate! star wars lies to you :) for the moon landing stuff, that sound isn't actually traveling through space, it is being transmitted electronically, that's electromagnetic radiation, which is light, which does travel through space.
@ryanfranks9441
@ryanfranks9441 6 жыл бұрын
You say light doesn't travel through a medium, this is objectively false. Photons travel through a medium called the electromagnetic field.
