As a kid, I loved the idea of finding a message in a bottle. I used to throw them into the sea but never heard back. I recently heard of one that washed up after seventy-odd years on the oceans. It was a love letter of sorts, from a soldier on a troop ship and it was just beautiful. The soldier was long dead but the family were found.

To help the Sea Glider to keep certain magnetic heading, you can embed neodymium magnets in the wood. The horizontal force of the wings is transmitted to the bottle in a more efficient way if you use a stiff rod instead of the string.
@sagesends6 жыл бұрын
people freaking out about this not being "eco friendly". There is no plastic. Wood degrades, glass is just sand, and metal sinks to the bottom and rusts away. plastic floats on the top, looks edible to fish, and never degrades. Fish dont try to eat wood, and dont try to eat glass or metal because it is sunken in the sand. Yes, this isn't perfectly eco friendly, but the cool factor greatly outweighs any ecological impact.

I see plenty of room for improvement. Namely, I see how this could even have directional control, via prevailing wind direction. The string being replaced by a stiff wire, extending above the bottle, to a fixed wind vane. Direction of travel could then be selected depending on the relation between the direction the sea glider is facing, versus the direction the wind vane is facing. Studying prevailing wind and ocean current charts, one could fairly accurately "program" a course and destination.

Unfortunately I think a bottle dropped into the Mediterranean would most likely stay within that area as there is only a narrow escape to the Atlantic ☹ Hopefully, though, lots of KZbin viewers will make one of these bottles and throw it into the Atlantic then you might get lucky. That would be amazing, wouldn't it😊
@fCauneau6 жыл бұрын
Nice idea, but we don't know when the glider went its own way... Using other words : did you checked that the path of the bottle followed the swell, and not the current ? Using the met data for the 4 months trip period could help to get the answer... or ask to an oceanographer. Very very Interesting, anyway, Bravo !!!

It's a very cool idea. I'm of course aware that it's a basic concept device, but you could have a lot more efficiency with some very basic changes. For once, I assume that the 45 degree angle is far too much. With the analogy to airplane wings, you'd be aiming for the angle-of-attack for "best glide". I'd start by working with something around ~ +/- 15 degrees. More means that the "vessel" will sink and lift more easily without gaining forward speed. It's a bit like an airplane with an engine failure: would you nose-dive at a steep angle (converting altitude into vertical speed) or would you be looking for a more shallow nose-down attitude that gives you the greatest distance over ground (slower vertical speed, but higher forward speed and more covered forward distance), in order to make it to the next airport? The aspect ratio of the "hydrofoil" will also play a big roll: longer wings with a shorter chord length will be more efficient (less induced drag due to tip vorteces). You could also add symmetrical "winglets" for the same reason.

Just throw the bottle into the water and it will flow somewhere. This added complicated anex just slows it down, and pulls it constant in other directions, because it does not have any steering device.

I don't understand why some humans find it fine to throw glass into the seas. At a young age, I've seen my aunt bleed from accidentally cutting her foot when she stepped on a shard from a beer bottle while we were swimming at the beach. I mean that big partially rusty piece of glass was lodged into her foot. It was gruesome. Its been almost more than 2 centuries since it happened but I can still recollect the events of that day.
