Summary of today's Lecture : 1) Standing waves are formed by overlapping of two waves having same amplitude and frequency and which are travelling in opposite directions. 2) In standing waves, all particles are performing SHM with same phase and different amplitude (which depends on position of particle). 3) In waves all particles have same amplitude and different phase at same point of time while in standing waves, all particles will have same phase at same time but different amplitude. 4) Nodes are those points whose amplitude is zero and are found at a/2 , a, 3a/2 , 2a , 5a/2,....[a means lamda]. Nodes are always at mean position irrespective of time. 5) Antinodes are those particles whose Amplitude is maximum almong all and are found at a/4 , 3a/4 , 5a/4 , 7a/4 , ........ 6) Equation of a standing wave is y = 2A sin(kx) cos(wt) Where 2Asin(kx) is amplitude of wave and phase is defined only by t and that's why at same point of time all particles of standing waves have same phase
