4 years late but for anyone seeing this the Waves NLS channel works in dual mono by default and can mess with your phase, so I change it to stereo mode to work around this issue. Maybe thats what is causing the phasing you were talking about in the highs. I use NLS a lot for basslines and noticed my bass was going out of phase a lot until I switched the stereo mode.
@Unders Жыл бұрын
yeah a good point that i seldom think about. Thanks for highlighting it. Thats down to DAW logic will pick the stereo option. I think PT also opts for dual mono though.

I have VCC and VMR and also have Waves NSL.... and the SSL Channel. I love the sound of the NSL across all audio channels and underneath I add the SSL channel as a second plugin and on the master buss I have The NSL Buss, SSL Channel and J37 tape... it’s amazing sounding...

I have both of these also. Love them both, but my go to is always the NLS on most channels. I also use the ssl of the nls on anything that needs to be solid, i.e. drums, bass, anything thats needs ssl punch. I use the emi to to two different things, one is saturation distortion and giving more width to tracks, and the neve I save for detail leads or anything you need more clarity from. As for slate I use it in the same way. but I will only use the slate one if I am using it for other things that come in the bundle like blue strip 76 or distressors. also love the lift eq in bundle, again if i am turning on VMR always seem to add a little lift to things.

for some reason I have the same issue with the SSL simulation of the channel NLS, BUT the Mike and Nevo sound amazing in my opinnion, one its very dark focused and the other is pretty balanced and bright, hopefully Waves fixes this for users

Your totally welcome. They both have their strengths, but that EMI console on NLS is a winner for me too.
@warringtonruncorn6 жыл бұрын
It's really difficult to tell through the KZbin compression the differences between the types - they are incredibly subtle plugins. I do have the Slate package though and I know it's just about the sweetest sounding digital gear you can have.
@Unders6 жыл бұрын
my accidental discovery of stacking the two together is super sweet too. Ive also had VCC for a long time before it was part of VMR. Not much i can do about the youtube compression. I could upload the 4k files but then 95% of my audience simply cant stream at 4k anyway

I like the NLS EMI from Waves and use it a lot. I like em both as well and a combination would be cool. I find myself replacing the SSL with the Omnichannel. I say that cause I'm going away from SSL lately.

Yeah, but the thing is I have never used a analogue console so I don't know what results I am meant to be getting, I have nothing to compare it against. I seem to be getting a warmer sound by putting the waves pultec eq on my masterbus. Does that make sense to you?

Yup totally. I love pultec EQ especially to lift up high end. If it sounds good then go with it 👍

Great video! I’ve been using NLS EMI for all of my recent projects, now that I hear the VCC - it seems like it adds a much more subtle and transparent enhancement. The NLS sounds good but adds a lot of low end (?) the way I hear it. I’m pretty new to the mixing thing so I have a question; what amount of headroom should I leave so the NLS wont squash the mix the way it does usually? I leave approx -6 db at the moment, should I go -18? Am I speaking nonsense? Any input will be appreciated!
@Unders4 жыл бұрын
each NLS responds differently. If you find it squashing there's really 2 places to look. 1 the input gain 2 the drive control. An remember if they are linked, One place being driven might sound ace, but it will drive all the others.
@denchik004 жыл бұрын
Unders Thanks, I will look into it!
@shaft90004 жыл бұрын
good rule of thumb : if up to ~10-12 tracks - gain each stage at around -12dB, if more tracks, then record around -18dB . When working in 24-bit or better with relatively clean AC power, your limiter's make-up has no problem boosting 30-40 dB at the output stage, and your noise floor should be well low-enough. Anything all-ITB is even less of a worry - you could probably track at -50dB and boost later with no significant problems.
@mika4619834 жыл бұрын
you cranked the buss drive on NLS Spike up to 6. I found it's distorting the things in not such a good way above 3. The Mike has less distortion and the Nevo has even less. By the way, Spike channels work a lot more clearer than the Spike buss.
@Unders4 жыл бұрын
You might find your signals were hotter, hence the distortion.
@mika4619834 жыл бұрын

NLS is louder so it's not a fair comparisson..
@neondagger5 жыл бұрын
It's a good point. I compared and on averages NLS is 2dB higher. It sounds better to me (and it's what I use personally) but then when compensating VCC it actually sounds a lot smoother than NLS. Generally the same richness in bass, while in NLS higher frequences are dampened a bit and given that "tube rattle" warmth. Depends on what you're going for I guess but VCC was more modern/cleaned-up sounding to my ears.
