This Hat means Serious Business. This Waveshare 4G HAT has a SIM7600G-H Module onboard which enables the 4G/3G/2G communication and GNSS positioning. This module supports LTE CAT4 connection up to 150Mbps for downlink data transfer.
By the end of this guide, you will be able to send text messages and ring phones from your Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer. Furthermore, you will be to pinpoint exactly what location your device is via GPS (and then send that location data through a text message). You will also be able to send text messages (SMS) to your Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer which can then activate hardware (attached via GPIO Pins) based on the contents of the text message.
You can also run this Waveshare 4G HAT as an Internet Hotspot, providing an internet connection that you can use to access the web or send out MQTT commands but to prevent blowing up the scope of this guide any larger, that will be explored in a follow-up guide. Furthermore, correctly configured this Waveshare 4G HAT will work with an Arduino Uno Micro-Controller or even as a standalone board, but that's also another story for another guide.

Great Video! The presenter has a knack for explaining stuff clearly and I can tell it has come from experience. I had a small question. Is it possible to make REST API calls with the setup? I feel the LAT & LONG values could be sent to google and the location data received in HTTP response can be sent as an SMS to further improve human readability. Please let me know if you anyone has tried this. Thanks :)

That Hat is great, but for the love of god, DO NOT use it with an IoT SIM. I tried to use it with the Hologram IoT SIM shown in the video and i spent the last 4 days pulling my hair out trying to get a stable internet connection! Inserted a normal SIM (for smartphones) instead, and it worked no problem. You only have to set the Pin (if the card has one) in the modem settings (AT+CPIN)

I wonder if using this kind of setup if an older analogue car phone could be enabled to work without any physical changes, sounds like the main thing would be getting an analogue phone keypad and maybe screen to work with this setup. I have a Lexus LS400 and they came out with analogue phones in the centre console and I have the phone, it would be awesome to get it operational, not to use while driving of course. If this was possible I guess it could be integrated with a 7" screen and be usable through the screen also. it is above my neuron limits.

Cheers for your kind words mate 😊 my understanding is that a MAC address is a low level physical address which is used for unique identity for a device. That Address will exist only for your local network/WiFi and not used for Mobile Connectivity. The web server is the easiest way to visualise information around a local network. If you want to transfer data around a local network Home Assistant is definitely a good approach. Hope this helps!

@raypikus5053

You can't use your current phones SIM if you are on Verizon Wireless, because they link your phone IMEI to the SIM card, and the 7600 has its own IMEI, so Verizon will block it. In the USA at least. Mint Mobile runs on T-Mobile's infrastructure. I bought a 3-month Mint Mobile plan with a SIM for $45 and activated it by calling their customer service line, they also gave me a separate 7-day free-trial I can use as a second SIM for my next prototype.

Yes you should be able to do it but it all depends on the driver situation. Software like OPNSense can use a connection as a fallback, but you need BSD drivers. Hit up google regarding the + . There will be a ton of information you can uncover regarding the best approach.

Cool, functional and easy to install/use but a 80 euro price tag for allegedly 35 euro board.... At this point just getting a router with a sim slot from a local provider is easier and bypasses all possible region specific problems in terms of setup.

The existence of this might not impress you then - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/CE08606 Truthfully for me this gear is about getting into the weeds and figuring out how all the connectivity methods blend together in our modern world. @@Core-Electronics It doesn't surprise me that it exists. As the people around here like to say, there are passengers for every train. As for "getting into the weeds", focusing on the cheaper stuff (for example I'm looking at a SIM800L GSM GPRS module for 6 euro in a local site) is better idea IMO since, even if its more soft and hardware limited than the featured one here, its affordable for more people. I know that it won't make a very interesting video for the "tech enthusiasts" but how many ppl that watched this would spend 80 vs 6 euro to try it for themself? That is the main problem in the "hobby electronic" market also - making a small run product, focused for the few instead of the many, and keeping the price up since selling little means u gotta cover expenses and make profit fast - the fact that the chip on this hat retails for 38eu means the whole thing cant cost more than 40,45 when mass manufactured. At least the documentation/software support here seems solid enough compared to most modern SBCs even.

Hi Tim! I have a question regarding the 4G HAT - i'm currently working on a project and i cant find an answer to a question you might be able to answer Is it possible to communicate with a certain other device which supports 4G? I have a smart power meter, IoT, and its called ADW300. This device supports 4G communication, but is it possible to read data from the ADW300 with the Raspberry Pi 4B (combined with the waveshare module)? They dont need to communicate to each other, just the smart meter has to send its data to the raspi. How can they connect to each other?
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, If you are sending data you need some form of communication. Is the ADW300 able to connect to Wifi? If so you can create a Hotspot using the 4G HAT which then gets the WiFi connected to the Raspberry Pi and the ADW300. Once they are communicating on the same Wifi you will be able to create Python Scripts that pull, display and utilse the data form the Smart Meter. Hope that helps 😊, Tim

HI Tim, I am currently running this 4G HAT with a Raspberry Pi in exactly the same hardware configuration that you are using (Same jumper configs and USB connections). However, I am experiencing power issues when I plug in this module for longer than 30minutes? The Pi starts to overheat and hang... Any suggestions?

@@Core-Electronics I followed the documentation and I also added the execution of A7600E to rc.local, but still it is the case that the Raspberry is not always connected to the internet after a new boot. What exactly am I doing wrong and what steps should I follow to connect the Raspberry to the network after booting?

You may be able to get better connectivity using the Raspberry Pi Lite OS version. You could also write a Python script to force the system to connect to the internet by pinging it multiple times.

One issue. I'm using this with only 4G and of course since there is no real time clock on the pi it has no idea what time it is when not connected to a network. And of course that matters for running cron scripts to send GPS coordinates. I guess what I need is internet access but my SIM has almost no data. Need to set time over 4G or GPS and then kill the internet once time is set.
@Core-Electronics

Looks like another fellow has run into this issue too. He created a script that fixes the system time based on the GPS location of the device. I reckon that is right up your alley with your current hardware - wb4son.com/wpblog/?p=1635 You also have the option to include a RTC to your system. Something like this would be a plug in solution to getting accurate timing - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/DFR0386

@@Core-Electronics Thanks. Looks like on my install the GPS outputs NMEA data on ttyUSB1. Installing gpsd and then grabbing the output causes the SMS GPS script to fail. I guess there is a serial port issue there. I have a couple of options. My only goal is to track my camper if stolen. I can attach a second USB GPS (I have many of them) and then run that script. There is bound to be a way to do it with one GPS but I can't figure it out. Also I keep the power off in the camper via a battery switch. Ideally I want to boot the Pi when the thief powers up the camper for the first time but it seems like by then the Pi won't know the date much less the time. Real Time Clock sounds great but really no less trouble hanging another GPS off the Pi on another serial port.

Hello, this is a super nice video. We are working on project of an Arducam 16MP with RPi. We need to send 4 or 5 times a day a picture taken by then camera to a server via HTTP POST or similar. How can I use the SIM7600G-H 4G HAT to do it? Is there any Python library to do that? The project should run remotely 24/7, we do not access the RPi and so we cannot write commands. Everything should be finally packed into a Python script that runs continuously and alone.

This HAT should be the ticket you need. You can set this HAT as a internet Hotspot for your Raspberry Pi and that will allow you to remotely connect in (SSH). The rest is just some clever Python scripts 😊 totally doable.

@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Жыл бұрын
An IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. Think of it as your phone's fingerprint - it's a 15-digit number unique to each device. In some countries, it is illegal to change this number. So do check if it is legal in yours. For example, it is legal in Africa and Asia, and illegal in Europe. From my minor exploration into the topic it does seem like it would be possible to alter the IMEI.
