You say that you cast this using the lost wax process in your description, do you prefer that method over sand casting? Seems to me that this casting could be done quicker and easier in sand than taking the time to do a lost wax cast. I know that you wouldn't get the same surface detail using sand but you are going to cleaning up and shaping the surfaces anyways, and this setting does not have all of the small intricate details that a lost wax casting is know to be good for. The other concerning thing is that once you melt your wax out you only get one shot at the casting as opposed to a sand cast where you can keep your wax carving for later use and try casting it over and over again till you get it right just in case you mess up. Any thoughts?

I have never tried sand casting Randy so I can't say whether I like the method of not :)

You should give it a shot Steve, I do sand casting all the time for the silver rings and pendants that I make. It's nice being able to save my wax carvings to use again in the future as opposed to having to carve them again. Here, check this out, this is a heart pendant that I made my wife for an Easter present facebook.com/randy.smith.161446/posts/10210273945358642

Acuracy on this scale is needed sand casting just wouldnt be possible.

I've attempted sand casting in different forms, and I would say that, given the number of holes in his prong setting and the scale that it's at, it would be a real pain to do. Also, a lot of jewelers save silicone molds of their wax models so that they can just repour them. This is especially important when you build a custom piece that took a lot of time to make and dont want to worry about making an incomplete cast and losing your work.

how do you remove the scribe lines?

The scribe lines are removed by sanding the model.
