So, a couple of years back there was a flurry of beekeepers putting peppermints into their hives to control hive beetles. Never found any studies on it, but I tried it and it sure seemed to work. If I saw beetles, I put maybe 4 peppermints in. When I came back the next week I found very few beetles. Has there ever been a good study on this? Peppermints are dirt cheap and mainly sugar, so I wouldn't expect a company to try and market it. Thoughts?

😊Thanks for making this video. I was told when i first started keeping bees, if you can afford to set fire to a 100 dollar bill you can afford to keep bees. Holding on to equipment like this really helps. I can't lose the $100.

Sorry you have this mess to deal with. I have a few of these to deal with. Late yesterday I was feeling SO guilty for letting this happen. You saw all the chatter on your FB beginning BK page, all the "haters' beating me up over the SHB trap. DANG! Anyway thanks for being real.

There are a few benefits to being a Northern Beekeeper. 🔥WORKS🔥 and it makes you feel better about what they have done to your frames.😂 I agree freeze it a lot of the comb is still in good shape. Oh slime outs are nasty.🤢Thanks for sharing Kamon and Crew.👍 Question, would submerging it in water a little, float some of the crud out?

I'm in Texas and this year those hive Beatles have been really bad this year. Comb like you're showing I'd freeze them. Those are perfect for swarm traps next spring. A swarm will clean and repair those frames no problem. This year besides the normal problems I had a tornado go right through my bee yard, 13 colonies to 3 in a minute. Most of those were swarms cought this year, I overwintered 2 colonies i cought the previous year, my first year. Yeah I'm getting a crash course in keeping bees alive. I'm back up to 7 now, wish me luck.

My dad and I don't scrap comb on our frames during honey process. We freeze them that way when we pull frames full of honey we can put the used ones back in and the bees don't have to start completely over

I just found a stored box and frames that were infested with wax moth larvae. I'd even use paramoth in the box. So don't just think that will keep them away. Listen to Kaman on how to keep them at bay! You better freeze them FIRST!

When you put a previously wax moth ridden comb back into the hive, will they use it for honey or brood or both?

Whatever they want really.

Found small hive beetles living under oxalic acid extended release sponges. The bees had moved brood, honey and wax away from the sponges. It was a big mess!

If the comb is too damaged, do you throw the whole frame away or do you remove the foundation, scrape the frame, and put in new foundation?
@apveening2 ай бұрын
As long as (the wood of) the frame is still good, you can salvage that, together with the plastic base. And you can melt the wax and purify it, remainder will be sterile fertilizer.

I froze everything then took it down to scratch I have yet to bleach wash it and dry hopefully it will be ok

I am in rural-ish TN. I make medicine for cancer that is untreatable and deemed terminal. I started this when my daughter was diagnosed with terminal untreatable brain cancer. I am hoping to start bee keeping for medicinal purposes in conjunction with my current medicinal treatments. I hope to be able to make extra for those who cannot afford these types of treatments. I would very much like to discuss this with you in hopes to get some support with starting and adding these new treatments into my regimen. I hope to hear from you. Thank you 🙏🏽

I have a question that has nothing to do with the hive beetles or wax moth. How long do u keep feeding pollen sub to your hives my hives are doing good, they are lookig real good and I am feeding 1-1 and pollen sub ultra bee we never have much of a fall flow I have been feeding by 2 gal bucket since july. and the pollen sub. we are in a dearth and have been since July if i keep feeding pollen sub till it gets real cold here will the queen keep laying. I like strong hives for winter. Thanks and I hope u and Loral have a verry blessed week
@MeadApiaries2 ай бұрын
Generally, if bees are bringing in pollen from a good source and lots of it, they will not touch pollen patties or sub. Same as sucrose during a flow. However, I have a small nuc that I am experimenting with that does not have a huge foraging force and they will readily take small amounts of patty. Their queen cells just emerged this week.

@MeadApiaries2 ай бұрын
@@framcesmoore run a small strip of patty on the top of a center brood frame. If the bees are on it within the hour it's a good sign they will readily take your offerings of more pollen patty. My nuc went immediately to it and it was gone within the day. Also watch the front entrance. You will get a good idea how much pollen if any is inbound.

For some reason Canadian beekeepers are keen to import these problems.
@kamonreynolds2 ай бұрын
Canadians imported small hive beetles before we did they just aren't very successful in Northern US or Canada. Wax moths you have had for over a century it shouldn't be a problem. My concern is what are you all going to bring in next from the multiple countries you are importing packaged bees from?

Para moth crystals. You want to use them when you are storing your frames for the winter. Do not use regular moth balls as they have different chemicals that are harmful.

Your into a not so good fall flow and you said feed feed feed. If you have commited to feed and things turn around like they so easily can. How do you get feed off your production colonies in time to eliminate any possibility of funny honey? Or is there a point where time and weather moots any goals of production?

You're just waiting for me to get those beetles and invent a solution 😂. Kamon, will wax moth larva eat the wax where beetle larva was before and slimed it ?
