Waxed Canvas Camp Goods.

In this video we take a look at some new waxed canvas products that I was recently given for my Birthday and some that I bought from eBay. There are three different brands to look at including, Frost River, 3 Trees Products and the Ray Mears Woodlore brand. The items range from a small ditty pouch, Zebra billy can bags to tool and fire kit rolls. All well made and practical items, I'm sure they will come in useful for years to come. We have a long history of cotton and canvas making in England from the years of old wooden ships and all the old clothing etc. But now sadly we only have a couple of cotton mills left today. Hey Mark great review of some handy sacks and a roll. I've called up the 3trees and hoping he can help. I've been adding to my trail cookset and have been looking for a thin canvass pouch (drawstring maybe) that can contain within my powdered milk. I don't like plastic bottles - I prefer things that are organic and mold themselves to my cookset and or cooking mug. The products came across well here. Have a great rest of the week. All the best. Canvas is a nice material and the more I use it the more I like it. Its a shame that there is so much plastic and nylons about, but that's the age we live in I suppose. Hi Mark hope your well buddy I while ago I had a canvas pouch made for my pathfinder bush pot I think I paid about 28 quid but it was tailor made and it's excellent quality and the thread used is writ proof. I ordered it from blues bushcraft boutique. Not sure if you have heard of it but they make things to order and they also have loads of good stuff that they stock. Great to see you back Mark :) Thanks for the video! I'm interested in the difference between the dc4 and cc4 as I need something to look after my Mora and sharpen up my kitchen knives. You mention the cc4 for knives, why is that please?

Hi Martin, I hope you are keeping well. Thank you as always for watching and for taking the time to comment :) The difference between the dc4 and the cc4 are the materials used on one of the sides of the stone. Both have a main ceramic side (Black side), but the dc4 is a diamond and ceramic stone and the cc4 is a ceramic and ceramic stone. I tend to use the cc4 on my knives as it is less aggressive than the dc4. I find the diamond side on the dc4 is OK for hatchets and knives that are really in need of some work, i.e. chipped blade etc. But if the knife is not too bad, I like the finer white ceramic side of the cc4. It is a lot smoother and perfect for putting a sharp edge on a knife. Once the knife has been stropped, it should be razor sharp then :) One other things I like about both of them is they stay flat for a long time, so they will last a long time and are now quite a decent price, which is nice. If you are looking for something similar I know Spyderco do a 5" long version but is more expensive. I hope this helps, all the best and thanks again, Mark :)

Hey Joe, I hope you are keeping well brother :) Yeah I'm a firm believer in buying products that are made in your own country. It isn't always possible but I like to try. You are lucky in the US, you seem to have everything over there that you need. The UK is quite small, so we don't have as many manufactures or stores hence I buy a lot of US and Scandinavian kit as well. It is always well made and lasts the test of time. The canvas isn't that heavy really. If you had a large piece for a tarp then it would way quite a lot compared to nylon, but the small pouches are quite light and doesn't really add much weight to the kit. Yeah winters knocking on door now Joe. Soon be time to dig the long johns out. I don't mind winter as long as it doesn't rain all the time. We don't tend to have them over here as much, so I tend to buy new gear as long as it isn't too expensive or buy used items off eBay. On the videos most of the gear I show is usually quite new, so people can see what it looks like before it gets dragged through the dirt and beat up. Hi Mark, I hope you are keeping well :) I wish I could make my own clothing. My gran taught me how to do a basic knit as a child. She said the soldiers in the first world war used to knit their own socks, just so I wouldn't think it was a girls thing lol. But I often think about getting a sewing machine and making a few canvas and wool items to wear. Things usually quieten down at the fishery at this time of the year, so it is something that I might look at doing. It would give me something to do over the winter time. I wouldn't mind a woollen Boreal type shirt. I have got a few wool blankets that I could use. Do you make any clothing Mark? Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

@@markbailey2981 I recently acquired an old sewing machine 70s probably. The new ones don't last long. Been making bags and sacks for camp gear so far. Thanks for your response about the soldiers making socks. My grandfather was in WW1 as well. All the best.

You are right about the newer sewing machines not lasting as long Mark. A lot of the professional seamstresses seem to prefer the older machines. I might see if I can pick an old Singer up from somewhere. When I was a youngster most home clearance places would always have them for sale. But you don't seem to see them anymore. I suppose not as many people make or even repair their own clothes compared to the 60's and 70's. Its good you are putting yours to some good use. I will defiantly look into getting one at some point. As you are doing, you can never have enough bags and pouches. Thanks Mark, have a great day :)
