In 1983 I was 13 and I'd throw my Mossberg 500 over my shoulder, jump on my BMX bike and pedal through my downtown during morning rush hour to get to a great hunting area on the other side. No one would bat an eye at a kid with a shotgun over his shoulder pedaling through town. Those were the good ol' days lolol

It truly is a different world these days unfortunately. I’m not a big fan of open carry in any form just because firearm theft is so rampant these days but even without that there tends to be a lot Of other drama with visible firearms. I too used to be able to carry whatever I wanted slung over my shoulder and mosey around town without issue or anyone saying a word. Fast forward to more present times and it’s not like that at all. Even going back 15 years when I was in college at nights I experienced issues; I had a shotgun on a rack visible through the back window of my truck and the campus security made a huge deal when they saw it. I wasn’t allowed to go to my classes that night and they had a state trooper escort me off the campus. This was for an unloaded 870 express with the action open not bothering anyone in a rifle rack. I suppose someone saw it and was scared. 😱

Star pistols are one of those forgotten gems in my opinion. I purchased a Megastar in .45 when I first started getting into pistols of that caliber. This was before I really knew anything pertinent about defensive firearms and just knew I wanted guns in .45 auto. I too have always enjoyed a good value so I ended up with some pretty unique pistols in that caliber, namely a Para Ordnance Warthog Hi-Cap, a Ruger P90 and then the Megastar. I carried them all at one time or another but as I learned I transitioned to a Glock 30 and eventually scrapped the idea of .45 for EDC all together and now just rely on a 9mm for daily carry, but the Megastar is still in the safe and gets brought out every so often for range trips. It’s always been a super reliable pistol albeit a tad large and heavy for practical concealed carry.

My father was not a shooter. He was a soft hearted farmer, and he imparted that to me. I came by my interest in firearms naturally and thanks in large part to Lt. Col. Nutnfancy. I taught my sons about guns very early. I have a video from when they were about 2 and 3 years old going over the 4 rules and the parts of my handgun. Two weeks ago, my 10 uear old fired his first 9mm. The first time he shot anything bigger than a .22. So i saved the shell and put it on a chain for him.

@@mikeg4247 Agreed; two main reasons I’ve seen Star’s not work is from bad mags or because the firing pin was damaged/broken. Found mags that worked and got a gunsmith to fashion a replacement firing pin and it turned my ‘45 production Model B from a jamming machine to eating everything down to cheap steel case like it was nothing.
@TheFaceofRebellion6 ай бұрын
I've had a couple of those over the years. Good, solid pistols and ai never had any problems. It is a simplified 1911-ish pistol. I didn't know the current prices, but back when I bought mine you could have one for about $150. I guess when you look at the rate of a QUALITY 9mm 1911, they're still a good value. I am your child gun safety methods personified. I have been into guns since my youth, my wife knew coming in that it was and would always be a huge part of my life. I started my children very early. Guns are so commonplace in my home that (to them) an AR leaning in the corner is literally no different than seeing an umbrella. A pistol on the counter is no different than a coaster. I can sit one on the counter for days, and they won't give it a 2nd glance. Something else I did early on was conduct an experiment. I allowed my son to handle a few unloaded pistols in order to see what he could get the trigger to actuate on. The result was that all of my revolvers got locked up, and I kept semiautomatic pistols with full magazines and empty chambers accessible (to me and my spouse) for HD purposes. At 4 years old, he had just enough strength to cock the hammer on revolvers, and of course pulling the trigger is nothing. Couldn't rack a single slide. That was a very enlightening experience, and goes to show that you show that you need to know what your child's physical abilities are. I had both of mine pretty well trained by age 3, but other people might not. If your kids aren't acclimated to firearms and you have a .357 on top of a cabinet thinking your kids are safe, you might rethink that. Kids are climbers. I caught mine on top of the refrigerator more than once with no idea how they achieved this feat. My sister is a trauma nurse and has seen things that my OIF hardened mind couldn't cope with, and STRONGLY disagrees with my method, and while I completely understand that, she's to the extreme that on my last visit, I helped my BIL assemble an AR at their kitchen table and she made us wait until her 2 year old went down for a nap, because she didn't want him to see it. But my method WORKS. My children know if they want to look at daddy's guns, we'll bust the safes open anytime and they can look and familiarize. There's no taboo, there's no temptation, there's no sneaking. I believe that is absolutely critical, wether you are a dedicated gun guy or just a family man who owns a lone .38 special for home defense. You have got to start this early, no different than potty training.

I've owned a couple star BM's and love them. The reason Star's get a bad rap is because a lot of them went through Russia and sat in a warehouse for a decade. When they first got to Russia, they were stripped down in batches and weren't always assembled with their matching parts. So just make sure your serial numbers match before you purchase and you'll have a damn fine little firearm. I wouldn't recommend disabling the mag disconnect, but I'd pull the spring in the grip that prevent the mag from dropping out.
