Just bought this watch today and oh my i have to agree with you that this watch is truly special. I love the simplistic yet sophisticated design. I've tried the different series such as the 'padi turtle' and 'save the ocean' version but this piece is just something to behold. The black raised waffle face just give a more elegant look to it. Very solid and nice watch

"SHIELD" "ARROW" "SWORD" Spoken Like A True SAMURAI ... Any Non collector would think you are SEEING things while on LSD ... I LOVE SEIKO DIVERS and Especially this square "Outlandish" Design reminiscent to me of the iconic Italian PANERAI (first professional diver 1936) which at $5,000 I will never buy, BUT can get a SIMILAR LOOK with the Samurai, AVI-8 Lancaster or Parnis Militare ... Inspirational to put your Monster next to the Samurai, HELPFUL side by side Comparison as normally the Monster wears Bigger due to the Wide Crown ... But the robust "Tuff" Samurai certainly put it in its place. EXCELLENT Review, Thanks, Major Jim, USMC
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim, glad you liked the various facets of the video, including the quick side by side. Hah I didn't think the sword, shield and arrow were hard to spot... the hand nicknames are well established ones, and the 12 o'clock marker I thought I had heard described as a shield before too. All in all, this makes for a warrior of a watch :)

Notice I said, "NON COLLECTOR" as I SEE the Sword, Shield & Arrow PERFECTLY ... I meant "Non collectors" don't SEE all the intricacies, details symbols, value You & I see in a watch ... THEY (to include wife & friends) think we are Delirious because we have a Beautiful PASSION FOR HOROLOGY they DON'T Understand. Still, a great review AGAIN.

Awesome watch but I wish Seiko would include a sapphire crystal .
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that - yes me too, I certainly would like to see sapphire, but Seiko seem to only reserve this for much higher end divers (e.g. Marine Masters). Strangely many similar price ranged non-divers (e.g. Coutura) have sapphire crystal... go figure!
@wyntje83
@wyntje83 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Only thing missing in this watch imo. I don't do anything with my watches that put them at a high risk of having the glass shattered, which seems to be what Hardlex is more resistant against than Sapphire. I'd much prefer Sapphire's higher scratch resistance.
@francois.m
@francois.m 6 жыл бұрын
John-TheCopter if you're feeling adventurous, you can swap the Hardlex for Sapphire Crystal yourself.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's right you can... however I would add that a DIY job will require some rather specific tools (and knowledge). Hence if I wanted to swap out the Hardlex on one of my Seikos I would be taking it to a watchmaker. Cheers, Ivan.
@PerthWAtch

Good thoughts there, and I think you're right about the MM300 models having Hardlex... I was referring more to the 600m and 1000m rated models, those have sapphire.

Good detailed review. I have always fancy the blue dial original in titanium for as long as I can remember, but never able to acquire the piece. My new SRPB49 scratches my long time itch, and serves as my “real” dive watch, which i take to the actual dive as a back-up time keeper. The blue Samurai is perfect when my Sub and my other divers are just too damn precious for me to do the job.

I got one of these watches in black and gold, and the bezel is easy to be damaged because is razed higher than the glass. I reckon it's to protected the glass, interesting design. Also to replace a damaged bezel cost around $159 USD on eBay. Apart from that, it's a great watch. Also I recommend buying the watch from a retail shop so you check the workmanship before you buy it, check the alignment etc.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Marc... good points, and yes I do think the raised bezel is to partially protect the glass from scratching. Didn't know it cost that much to replace... although I think there may be cheaper options available. Good point also about checking the alignment in store. Cheers, Ivan.

SW200 should be 38-40 hours, so if your Aquis is not doing that perhaps something is not right. The Samurai lume I can believe is better than the Aquis, although I would think it will be marginal rather than wiping the floor with the SuperLuminova. I bought this Samurai and I then saw this video. Great review of such an amazing piece. This is an affordable diver that does it's job well. The details are what attracted my attention. The minute hand, the pip on the sweeping central second hand, the Clou de Paris texture of the dial, the angular shape of the case as it descends into the lugs, the brilliant lume, the precision of the micro steps in the unidirectional bezel. Been wearing my STO almost daily for months now. I'm considering replacing the crystal with a sapphire one. Seiko's Hardlex-pitch is bull. If it really were an advantage, then why do they offer sapphire on their more expensive pieces? It's just a hardened mineral that won't shatter as easy, but has very little extra scratch resistance, which is what really matters for most people...
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say go for it. Hardlex may have some additional scratch resistance but I have seen zero objective data from Seiko themselves, which is what I really want. Without that, it seems like it's just all marketing spin and not a great deal of substance.

Really like both the Monster & Samurai, however the early Monster 7S26 is a major turn off and the newer Prospex Monster is a ridiculous price for a watch with an entry level movement IMO. Most people find it's somewhat better than typical hardened mineral glass, but if you take a metal object and bang right into the glass it *will* scratch. There are two small scratches on my Monster - the watch hasn't been babied and you really have to look to see them. Hope that helps!

Great question, and tough choice indeed! Well my brain would tell me to go for the *Sumo Bluemo* given the better *6R series movement* but my heart tells me to go for the Samurai as I very much prefer its different styling. In the end I would probably go with the heart decision, but many collectors have both, which at these prices is a very affordable proposition :)

Thanks for the prompt reply Ivan. I think I will go with your heart (not that I think there's anything wrong with your brain) and get the blue Samurai. In the mean time I've been binge watching some of your great reviews. Don't know if that was a good thing, because now my bucket list of watches have doubled. I see the price of the orange Samurai, that I previously thought I liked, has dropped to about the same as the one you reviewed. Unfortunately (or fortunately) Maverick's review of the bezel has killed it for me. He's right about it looking better with an all black bezel.( Rather just get an orange Mako XL for $200 less). Cheers.

Haha well I might be biased but I'd say watching my videos would be a good thing! :P You sound like you put a good amount of thought into your purchases, so I think you'd be fine having added to your wish list. Likelihood is that as you research more into the pieces, there will be some you will cross off. All the best with your impending purchase! Cheers, Ivan.

Hi Ivan, sorry to bother you, but can you remember if the samurai you reviewed, had the pin & collar bracelet ? I went through such a frustrating experience trying to size my turtle's bracelet, I eventually grew angry and threw the thing away (the pins just wouldn't go back into the collars and I lost almost all of the little buggers). Cheers.

@PerthWAtch 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there... unfortunately I think it does in fact have the push pins with collars! I can sympathise with you as I used to lose a couple of those tiny collars early on myself! Well tips I can suggest is to get yourself a good watch kit (~$10 on eBay) and put a cloth on a firm surface to work with - that prevents parts from rolling away. All the best!

NOT an awesome watch for what they are charging. The 4R35 is just the NH35 (4R if used in Seiko - NH if sold for use by another watch maker). Why would anyone pay what they are asking for a watch with a crappy bracelet, a mineral crystal and an $8 movement?

It's a bit of a mystical thing with Seiko, but I can tell you it's not just any few, but hundreds and thousands of people who pay for them. If you're really interested, just check out the Seiko section of a good forum. From my view, it's in part due to awesome case design.

You can purchase NH35 (same movement just designed 4R when used by Seiko instead of sold for use to other watch companies) for under $30 (U.S.) on ebay right now if you wish too. Deduct for markups and you come to a manufactures' cost of about $8 …. and I'm probably being gracious to Seiko at $8 considering that most of their movements are made outside of japan these days.

The Seiko dive extension is just unneccesary and a poor implementation i also hate how the bracelets do not taper on a lot of Seikos. I really dont get the hate the bracelets attract. They are very comfortable. They also do not look unstylish so i guess maybe we in the community have high expectations. Take my Sumo for example.. The seiko bracelet is super comfy and actually after trying other bracelets a I think also looks great. I agree that the divers extention is not great tho. It doesnt bother me but its so tight its not really usable.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 7 жыл бұрын
I think the bracelets are perfectly serviceable... it's just that Seiko does great innovation in many areas, including movements and case design, but they seem to fall back when it comes to bracelets. They are really quite basic, mostly use push pins adjustments and pressed metal clasps. Style wise they are ok, but I think still lag behind the case designs.
