Awesome! I've got a source of sustainably hunted fur nearby and I don't support fake fur because they create microplastics, but all the sustainable fur products I've found are either waaay out of my price range, don't fit me, or are fur farm sourced. I think making my own handmade fur product is my best option.

There are needles with a triangular tip that makes fur and leather sewing much easier by cutting the fur skin and not just piercing it with a needle for fabric sewing like the one used in this video. there are also different types of fabric, self adhesive tapes that you can place at the edge of the pieces of fur you are sewing making the union much stronger, much closer to the edge, so the union will be really invisible on the fir side, and it also prevents the fur from tearing apart where it has been sewn. Those two things, the fur needle and the tape will make your work far easier, cleaner, stronger and professional.

@@sewway This shows more about yourself and wanting to be right at any cost, nevermind ending up with a bad looking work, fortunately there are many other good videos online that show exactly how to do an easier and better looking work. By the way, you should NEVER use a normal pen to mark the fur, with time the ink will get to the other side and can become visible, you either use a soft graphite pencil or a pencil with a type of ink that disappears after a few days, it is of common use when sewing fabrics, so there.

Thank you! I recently got rabbit pelts to make dog toys with, and I was a bit confused on how to sew it since they're much stronger than the fabric I normally work with. (And I've never been great at the "invisible seam", so this video helped me out there, too.) Are there any other stitches that work for pelts? I'm not sure how well the one shown will stand up to frequent tugging.

I found with our golden who has about a hundred toys that if she wants to get rough with them she will. If she wants to rip them up (she's older now and doesn't do that) she will. I'd like to see what you made and how the dogs like them.
@someoneidk3084 жыл бұрын
@@beebob1279 My dog isnt very toy driven at all, but she'll do the same when she does find something she likes (and the pelts are a HUGE hit). I ended up braiding thick yarn together to make a tug-toy type thing, then tying it into two loops. (One smaller, one larger). I sewed a small bit of the pelt into a loop (think a pant leg, lol) and slipped it onto the smaller loop of the braid. I didnt sew it onto the braid itself, so its free-moving and I believe that helps with not harming the pelt. Chunks of fur and slivers of the leather itself often get taken off, but honestly it's standing up better than I expected. I will say that I don't use it for the traditional play that most people do with their dogs- fetch, tug, etc. (She doesnt like those games much, lol). I instead tend to encourage her to mouth it and be excited about it, and I use the pelts as part of the "jackpot" prize at the end of a track. They apparently smell very interesting, which makes it a pretty good prize.
@Handles-R-Lame3 жыл бұрын
@@someoneidk308 have you ever considered making a toy out of leather? Preferably all natural veg-tan leather, most are biodegradable and safe for animals to consume. Plus they last quite a while from my own experience, of coursr this all depends on how much ur dog likes to chew lol it could be gone within days. Furthermore the saddlers stitch is great and easy stich to learn its also a very durable stitch that can withstand a good amount of abuse especially if you use a good thread like Tiger branded thread. Just an idea, i myself do leather craft and find there are so many different ways to use and make leather. Its a great hobby, anyways i hope ur dog enjoys whatever you make for him/her. Cheers! Best of luck to you and ur projects!
@someoneidk3083 жыл бұрын
@@Handles-R-Lame thank you for the stitch advice! I'll try that one out :D As for the leather, I use real pelts because my dog isn't very toy motivated. She has no interest in balls, frisbees, crinkle toys, squeaky toys, etc. And I really do mean zero- I've been trying for years to get toy drive up using many methods. The only thing I've found that she sorta likes are furry fabrics, but they tend to be destroyed rather quickly (she likes to tear, not chew), thus pelts! Which she likes much, much more than furry fabrics lol. I think it's the scent, tbh. I haven't really looked into vegan leathers as an alternative, but I tend to be iffy about vegan imitations of leather/wool/etc because they tend to be made of really bad things for the environment. Vegan leather specifically is often made with/from plastic-based chemicals which obviously aren't great for the environment. Sometimes they're made from leaves or corks instead, though. But either way, I'm not sure about whether or not my dog will actually respond to vegan leathers like she does real pelts. The last thing I want to do is buy something that I won't be able to use, y'know? Thank you for the advice though, it is appreciated! :D

@@BroccoliBrigardist You can hand sew sheep furs, I’m pretty sure. I’ve never done it before (currently learning!), but all my research suggests you can. A lot of sheepskin patterns use hand sewing, as not everyone has access to a sheepskin sewing machine. I would go with what the other commentor said and learn some techniques for hand sewing heavier leathers. A pricking iron or diamond-shaped awl is used in leather working to make holes before passing through with a harness (or leather) needle. I’ve also heard of glover’s needles being used for sheepskin?? Those just poke straight through without needing a pre-made hole. But you can 100% hand sew sheep furs, it’s just a matter of finding the right tools, technique and stitch. Edit: I just found a video by a lady named Amika Ryan on KZbin about sewing sheepskin pillows, and she suggests a glover’s needle!

As long as it hasn't been treated or smoked all you have to do is soak it in water and it will absorb it. But then you'll have to work it to make it soft and pliable or it will just harden up again. But if the hide has been treated or smoked to stop it from doing that then it won't work. Most fur you get from a vendor or store, if it is soft most likely has been treated.
