Great point except I truly have a hard time calling today's stuff country. I don't want to "slag" the new guys as Waylon was also criticized for not being "true country" but to me the new stuff is just pop music with country clichés. Waylon was a country singer who sang about all sorts of stuff but the lyrics were real and raw. I personally cannot connect to the new stuff. It's well sung, produced, and performed but something is missing......soul.

there are so many reasons why Waylon was great but for me it always comes down to that voice. Instantly recognized, and always full of sincerity and gravitas. You know that it's a "man" singing, not some "tween". The guy was an Outlaw only because the media labled him one. He was just doing it his way. By all accounts he was kind, funny, and articulate..... doesn't me you could screw with him( or his music)

He was what is no longer politically correct. Anything he sings is heart felt, he was one.of the highway men. These were men who were labeled outlaw because their originating time frame was mainly gospel or folk (bluegrass). Waylon was an artist who cared what he had to say and was berated for it. He will always be one of the legends that times nor people can ignore. Remember your roots and where your music comes from. Today's crap does hold at least a thread in yesterdays, these kids and adults have heard this. It's not like today's favorite musician drew inspiration from his rear end.

Met him only once, at Stubbs BBQ in Lubbock TX probably 1974 or so. Stubbs was a small joint on the east side of town, gone now I'm told. Yes he was kind, and articulate... not a snob just a guy doing music. He wasn't there to perform (at Stubbs) just having supper

A million thanks for posting this. There are not many videos around from this period of Waylon's career and if they are the quality isn't nearly as good as this series. I'm surprised that he performed for such a relatvely small crowd at the peak of his career.

I think that was where he was most comfortable. Small intimate crowd.

Waylon was known for having a short fuse. He wanted to record the songs he liked, his own and artists like Kris Kristofferson. The establishment wanted him to record the music they wanted, as they dislikedhis sound. When they wouldn't let him record the music he wanted he started his own record company and recorded his music. The industry used their influence to keep radio stations from playing his music, and keep large venues from booking him. Despite this he was the star, and played a lot of these small venues, especially in Texas. The radio stations started playing his music, and he actually paved the way for artists to have greater say in their music. He and some musicians, including Willie Nelson were dubbed "outlaws."

there are quite a lot of songs that I like from Waylon but this one here is one of the all-time favorites and I especially like the way his backup singer is really putting forth quite an effort you can hear, good days! I
