Waymo Ride, 1 hour, Jaguar, Downtown Phoenix, Saturday, Oct 1 2022

I'm a Waymo engineer living here in Phoenix. Beautiful afternoon downtown - 100 degrees, starting to feel like fall
5:30pm - 6:30pm
Sped up 4x - slow down to 0.25 playback speed to get something that's closer to real time
I'm just adding waypoints around the most interesting areas in downtown - that's why we're just going in circles
0:19 - Away we go
2:10 - Smoothly passes a double parked car facing the wrong way on a narrow street
4:30 - Car parks in a small parking lot and manages a 3-point turn to get out. Get connected to rider support anyway, briefly chat about how that was pretty cool
6:30 - I've been adding and removing new waypoints on my trip and accidentally cancel the ride oops. Have to call a new car. Video picks up 8 minutes later, right after turning right around that corner in car number 2
7:11 - good yield to a wheelchair user
7:20 - Uber pulls an insane intersection maneuver with a rider jaywalking across a green light
8:10 - reasonably busy 4-lane unprotected road crossing

I'm impressed! As an Uber driver, I will tell you that downtown Phoenix is one of the most hated areas for me to drive. This F Pace did it flawlessly! I can see Waymo being present in a lot of areas that most of us drivers hate to go. With a car that doesn't have a driver that develops an attitude, it'll be a lot less stressful of a ride for a passenger. Some of these drivers get really worked up in traffic, and the riders can feel that tension. Makes it a very uncomfy ride. Nice video! I've got a few videos on my channel with me either following one or spotting a few. I'm gonna have to ride in one of these soon!

Only thing is you can’t see how many times a remote operator plays a part great till it crashes or something out of the ordinary happens then you’ll wish there was a person there instead

the car tells you when a remote operator takes control of the car. It will stop and a message will say "our team is taking care of this" this car did all the driving by itself.
