I was at the Aussie GP at Philip Island both years Gardner won. We went around the world following the motorcycle racing so walking a kilometre from our Philip Island house was no burden!

Modern m/c races are started with the rider sat on the bike, engine running, ready to go, when this was filmed, most races from local up to international were what was called bump start. The rider stood by his bike, dead engine, in gear with clutch lever pulled in, when the flag dropped, you'd push a few steps, vault aboard, drop the clutch and pray the motor fired up!

And before that there were Le Mans starts where riders lined up and ran across the track to jump on bikes.

I remember how good he was, as was the younger Mick Doohan. Oh and the name of Barry Sheene. All great riders.

I went to school with Wayne! (My claim to fame..lol) Wayne had amazing talent on those bikes! Was amazing to hear all the old school rider names on this video. Such wonderful memories of the races in those times.

Wayne was peRVING on my missus at Rundle mall in Adelaide. When he saw me looking at him peRVING he just winked and smiled and walked away. LEGEND

😊He was putting the hard word on my mates missus, the problem for him was, my mate was 6’4, 220 pounds, Wayne was a little fella 5’7, after a stint in hospital, I hoped he realised he wasn’t as big as he thought he was and changed his ways, yes I know him, I grew up in the same place, I’m 6’ and towered over him, he was a great rider, but an absolute asshole( he suffered little man syndrome) when he was younger.

Wayne Gardner also raced cars in Japan and V8 Supercars in Oz where he earned the nickname Captain Chaos. Wayne's son will be racing the works Yamaha in World Superbikes next year.

"Why do they run" ??!! It's known as a "Le Mans" start... That's why 👍 *His victory at the inaugural Phillip Island Grand Prix in 1989, was pure magic, back when. Hard fought against some awesome talent, Eddie Lawson (5th place), Wayne Rainey & Kevin Schwantz and he were engaged in an all out "hammer & tong" battle for the entire race. Gardner prevailed and the victory was just unforgettable. Son Remy Gardner is a great racer himself, currently racing for the GYTR GTR Yamaha WorldSBK team after departing KTM and MotoGP... Kind regards from Tuckombil via Alstonville and East Ballina 800km north of Sydney, ex Maroubra ✨️🤙

That was very cool.

FYI Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer and Randy Mamola mentioned at the start were American riders. Gardner was followed by great Australian world champions Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner. You need to do some MotoGP reactions.

The two stroke 500cc bikes needing jump starting (no starter motor). Later on they started them before the race.

It’s a Gand pix start, the bikes don’t have starters, the car equivalent the drivers have to sprint to their cars. In the olden days obvs.

their knees often touch the ground, they have metal kneepads built into the racing suit

Their elbows touch the ground now. Lean angles are incredible.

Wayne Gardner came off his bike so often and slid leg first into the barriers that he ruined his knees, gave up the Superbikes and ended up driving the V8 Supercars.

Wollongong is pronounced Woollen gong (the same as "wool" from a sheep) and The H is silent in Doohan. Other than that, good video.

There was almost identical accident happened a few years later Guy called Rossi he hit he's good friend in same manner guy fell off in front Unfortunately Rossi tried to miss him and hit him in the head killing him instantly As he tried crawling off the track the only noticeable difference was When Wayne hit the ride he's helmet came off Where's the Rossi incident it never and I believe that was the difference When Wayne hit the guy the helmet took the twist from head and neck away as flicked off But Rossi one it stayed on and basically twisted his neck snapping it They never release why he died and both extremely unlucky incidents Rossi went on to be one of the world highest winners in the sport He almost gave it away after the accident But decided to keep riding as that's what he's mate he hit would want him to do Not long after that he was almost unbeatable and multiple championship wins I believe it's changed him and was now racing for he's mate in his memory Doohan won a championship but had some bad accidents like Wayne Doohan almost lost he's leg and lost all the muscles and skin from knee down After the pinned his leg back together Stubborn he couldn't walk and on crutches would get on the bike and races it against doctors orders He walks with a permanent limp and lots of leg pain even today and his leg looks bloody horrendous How he could even ride the bike let alone race it buggers me they had to modify it for him to ride Instead of using leg for to brake they had to put a lever on handle bars for him to brake and needed to operate both at same time With different pressures he and many of the riders loose fingers or parts of them when coming off Sometimes get caught under handle bars and grinds them away slide on the pavement They call it if you haven't lost a part of a finger your not trying hard enough and most ride exspect it to happen in their career's Very different time back them so many waiting to take your place so they rode injured all the time as doohan had with leg But everyone was amazed he was able to even other rider's Big pay if make it to the top but hughe risks to get it as well and alway maimed in some way for rest of your life after the sport But they don't do it just for the money it the love of it and adrenalin that comes from it I might add their equipment wasn't anything by today's standards Bike are safe now from this guys every accident gets investigated and then the companies change things like strenghting the frames They found out at top speeds the frames would warp and twist under the rides chucking the off into the air and many other things They basically used to get bikes off show room floors and then put twice the power through them as things broke then they knew what to strengthen Cheers guys 🦘🇦🇺👍

Mick Doohan didn't just win A championship he won 5 of them and it would have been 6 if it wasn't for that accident and it could have been 7 or even more if it never happened Doohan's son Jack will be racing full time in the F1 championship from next year
@davidcruse6589Күн бұрын
@sammy_dog yeah I know but couldn't remember exactly how many so just put what I did as acknowledging he's a world champion
