Wayne, if you're ever without a calibrated mixing container, you can figure out the amount of oil to add by: remembering a gallon is 128 oz. If it's expressed as a ratio (100:1, 50:1, etc.) divide 128 by the ratio; eg. 128/100 = 1.28 oz of oil per gallon. Or, 50:1; 128/50 = 2.56 oz of oil per gallon.

Ran my 1991 Johnson 9.9 for years on my 14' Duroboat. Before that it ran on my dad's 80 Valco 13'. Good top speed 18 mph and super reliable. Boat got the nickname from some friends of Lil Tug. Due to the one pull nature of the old workhorse, and the fact I have dragged a few disabled boats back to dock with it. Nothing beats the smell of an old two stroke on the water.

I've been using a version of this since 1987 my first real job was at a sporting goods and Marine store and I worked on a lot of Outboards mostly old they call them vintage now but my boss was very specific on getting the right mixture of oil and fuel. The other thing to do is buy recreational field that doesn't have that alcohol in it. Alcohol is served in a glass with ice and hopefully some proper care for flavor.:-)

love the channel great topics! but please try driving gas tiller outboards the safe way with your left-hand. Emergency lock to lock maneuvers siting in the middle of the seat where the manufactures designed them? made for free use of right hand for fishing, running electronics, etc.
@WayneTheBoatGuy4 ай бұрын
My electric outboards have the tiller in the center - which seems like a better design. Although these are designed to be operated like you say, I often find it easier to be on the other side because I am usually also holding a camera.

And can use about of the gas to wash a measuring bottle out like this aswell so there is all the oil in the mix😅 but that just might be me, I have made the mistake of to lean on oil and locked up a few motors in my learning experiences

@WetNets754 ай бұрын
Here I am on a Sunday morning, thinking to myself, if the non use of stabilizer has something to do with intermittent fuel delivery interruption, the K. I. S. S. solutions already checked and omitted. It's almost as if something past where the fuel leaves the line, is getting gummed up by ethanol? 🤔
@wilco35884 ай бұрын
Actually the reason for that bottle is to get your measurement of oil but then you pour gasoline on top of it shake it up and pour it back in to your measured gasoline amount that make sure your oil is mixed and 99.9% of it goes into the mixed fuel can.

If you are Canadian and buy gas by the litre. It is a simple conversion. If you buy 20 litres of gas, take the amount of litres and double it, which is 40. Add a zero to the end = 400. Add 400 millilitres of 2 stroke oil to your gas tank. Another example, you buy 14 litres which doubled is 28. Add a zero to the end = 280. Add 280 ml to your gas. This gives you a 50:1 mixture with simple math.

@phillippeacock72554 ай бұрын
That looked quite complicated. By comparison I buy a one litre bottle of 2-stroke oil and it has a 100 ml secondary chamber at the top, which is filled by squeezing the bottle and the oil goes up there by a small pipe. My 50:1 mix just means for 5 litres of petrol, I only need 100 ml of oil, or 200 ml for 10 litres. Maths is easier in metric, but the bottle with the side tube and small chamber makes measuring really easy.

Johnson Sea Horse? Elgin, etc? These old 2 strokes have much smoother porting than modern 2 cycles, and that's one reason 2 cycles are disappearing. Fuel stabilizer? I don't use it. I remove the gas and run the last ounce dry.

@@WayneTheBoatGuy No. Clearing the carburetor is harmless. It's momentary and desirable.
@PapaMav4 ай бұрын
I use the clear line on the side of the 2 cycle oil bottel to measure how may onces of oil for 3 gals of gas. Not rocket science. My ratio is actually between 40 and 50 since I use a little more oil than the true 50:1 recommended amount. I use both Stabil and Star Tron Enyzme Treatment (this is what is really for the alcohol in the gas).
