I have a 1995 9.9 Yamaha for a kicker. Great little engine. I have made a few videos on it also on my channel. These little things will run forever but I have found that some parts are becoming obsolete, such as the regulator/rectifier. Maintenance items like the impeller and spark plugs are easy to obtain. I would recommend just getting the 703 controller. That way you know it will work. I’m sure there are few used ones for sale from a boat yard or market place, etc.

Oh Yeah, had a similar Evinrude, spark was weak and carbs were a bit dirty, especially the vent plate behind the carb, didn't take much and she was purring like a kitten, I polished it up, sold it and bought a 4 stroke 5 hp Briggs and Stratton outboard, still have it and it's very reliable. Pushes my 12 foot Pro 120 Very good.

Hey Wayne those are good motors for sure my grandad had one on an old skiff he built, there should be a fuse that could be the problem with your spark or it could be your power pack which im pretty sure are obsolete now. Also when changing the impeller on this outboard make sure its in reverse when you disconnect the lower there should be im pretty sure an 8mm or 10mm nut that connects the shift shaft between the motor and the lower. Good luck with your endeavors i cant wait to see the next video!

Don't be shy about calling Yamaha directly to ask about the engine. I bought a boat that had an '06 Yamaha 50 hp 2 stroke, and I have to say, they have been terrific in answering my questions on the phone.

i'm an outboard mechanic and i've worked on many of these cause they're popular in the netherlands. i'll try to give you some of the most important information i know about these before you tear into it more. those wires on top of the carburator are probably for the electric choke and that can be the reason why it won't start. if you're going to clean that carburator BE VERY CAREFUL cause parts for those carburators aren't available anymore last time i checked, except for gaskets and such. Also it looks like you have a "High Thrust" model which means that it's made to push big and heavy boats but it won't be fast. overall these are great and reliable engines! wish you the best!

Hey, Wayne, great video! As a new creator I came here from your advice thread on Reddit and subscribed on my main channel as your content is right up my alley! I'm not familiar with this particular Yamaha, but I get a lot of corrosion on outboards where I'm at and have had good luck with no-spark conditions by cleaning the grounds for the CDI, remote control, and the starter (while you're in there). Yamahas also have a yellow wire that you can unplug at the junction box to set the engine at base timing. It's a hail Mary, but might work to rule out electronic timing advance issues. Unplug the lanyard switch to rule out its failing closed (unlikely, but you never know). I have to commend your audio as well. Is that all captured with a lav mic? I struggle with getting the mix consistent with a lav or overhead mic when my head turns. And is your camera set in a follow-me mode on a gimbal or similar? That's a pretty cool subtle dynamic effect.
@WayneTheBoatGuy

Thanks! I am primarily using a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 which I usually set to follow me. I got it with a wireless lav mic that works pretty well and if the mic is under my chin instead of mid-chest, I get better results when I move my head.

Great little motors.With a few carburator parts you can boost it up to 15 hp providing it is in good shape otherwise.Some of them had no oil filter and you needed frequent oil changes The shaft is too long for your little boat but would be great for the big boat as a kicker! CHEERS from HERE! PS wish I was your neighbour so I could buy it from you!

No spark is probably because you didn't have the ignition system activated with power. I'm not referring to the starter. The 2 wires with the cabling are probably the on/off for the ignition, so need to determine where they connect on the engine and place a jumper wire across those connection locations.

14:38 when I got my 6ph tahotsu I didn't have a fuel tank either, but, there is a truck, if yea got fuel line, a primer, and a set of fittings fer your outboard, you can Jerry rig up something fer a regular gas can, well that's what I did, I wasn't looking to spend 200 on a second hand tank and hose, i put a filter on the hose in the gas can end if the hose. Like a chainsaw would have, and worked perfectly

I like fixing those old outboards. The only thing is I replace more money in parts than they’re worth unless it’s yours and you’re gonna use it. I’ve got a 71 Evinrude fisherman 6hp that I rebuilt. All the cooling passages were full of sand. Had another 6hp I rebuilt and gave to an old fella that needed one. I think I have about 180.00 dollars in this one, and not counting my time. I’ll be lucky to get 100.00 for it that’s the problem. If you completely paint and new decals etc. I guess they’re worth more to someone?

The first thing to do with an old engine that has been sitting like that one is pull the spark plug(s) and give each cylinder a 1-second blast of an aerosol lube like PB Blaster, etc. No WD40! Also, if you'd like to borrow an ultrasonic cleaner to get that carb scrubbed out, let me know.
