Easy DIY Raised Bushcraft Bed

Here's a unique and simple way to make a raised bed using a few simple tools and items you find in the wilderness. You will also need a wool blanket and possibly four or more blanket pins as well.

James, have you considered sewing a tarp to size, then slide your poles through the sewn canvas, lay the poles into the notched log as you have in your video. Then cover up with the blankets. Would roll up nicely with your blanket and maybe another tarp to be used overhead.

Putting this together for the first time can be a little tricky. A few tips: Make sure that the poles are not too far apart and have some large safety pins handy in case the friction of the blanket itself isn't sufficient enough to keep it from slipping and sagging. Also, make sure that the logs are high enough off the ground, ideally the poles should be at least 6 inches or more off the soil. Make sure the blanket overlaps enough so that your weight helps hold it all together. And last, remember that the blanket will stretch some so it will probably need to be re-tightened at some point. A good idea, but its easier to make two tripods to hold the raised bed. We cant find logs all the times or cut them. To mush effort. One can use two high resistence plastic bags as a bed surface and the blankets over them. Should try that to demonstrat the thing (If you can)... Keep up the good work.

Thank you, James! Very nice, & it gave me an idea. Cut the logs to 12" or 18", notch on 1 end, & stand on end, notches up. Then finish the bed the way you did. Or tie the blanket to the poles w/ cord at either end. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

We do something similar, but we roll the poles in the blanket from each side and use a few large safety pins to secure the roll. You do have to make your channels a bit deeper (to where the poles are slightly below flush with the logs) or the tend to “pop out” when you get in or move. We have done the same thing, but instead of logs, suspended the cot between 2 trees using paracord. Just loop the correct length of paracord over a branch and tie to both poles on one end. Repeat the same thing on the other side with the other tree. Makes a simple hammock like sleeping area.

Can you get by with just a tarp and wool blanket even in freezing or below freezing temperatures? I’m trying to find an alternative to using a tent for short stays because I don’t feel like setting up and breaking down a tent if I’m only going to be there for a night or two. There aren’t any bugs in the winter, so I could just use a tarp, bivy bag, and sleeping bag, but it’s really hard for me to get a good night sleep in a mummy bag. I think I would much more comfortable using a wool blanket if it is able to provide enough insulation and keep me from freezing to death

I just found your channel and it looks like you do some interesting things. I do have to say though that making a bed like this or even a hammock is a good way to ruin a wool blanket. The creaking sound you hear when you're on the bed is the wool fibers stretching and pulling apart. A canvas tarp is a much better option. Thanks for the video...

Thank you. Yes, it is difficult to keep the blanket from slipping around the poles. One thing is to make sure that the poles are flexible enough to be comfortable and yet strong enough to hold you, and also that they are close enough together. You definitely have to be choosy when picking out sticks that are heavy enough to hold up your weight.
