(WPMI) We give gifts to loved ones during the holiday season, even our pets who a lot of us consider part of the family. But think about all the animals in shelters, looking for forever homes. Local 15's Taren Reed found several ways to help those animals without spending a dime.
Mother Nature Network compiled a list of 25 ways you can help. And the easiest is to spread the word. That includes helping shelters hang fliers and sharing social media posts. You can also take the time to walk a few dogs and cuddle with some kittens.
Gathering supplies, that one's easy too. Every shelter needs supplies, that's how they provide for the animals. Scan websites like Craigslist for free items. There's always a section for that kind of stuff. Also call area hotels and supply stores. Ask if they have any surplus they can part with for free.
We know you're talented and the animals know you're talented, so put it to good use. Offer to make homemade toys. Scan Pinterest for DIY tutorials too.
What is your profession? Lawyer? Dog trainer? Website designer? Offer your skills free of charge every once in a while. It gives you some one on one time with the animals, all while beefing up your resume.
Fundraising ideas. Instead of asking for gifts on your birthday, ask that your friends donate to your shelter of choice. Also try putting out a jar to take donations.
It never hurts to say thank you. Give those shelters a little shout! They'll thank you for it too.
Another great way to help out animal shelters, if you're able, is fostering. Shelters fill up fast so finding temporary homes frees up space for more animals to be rescued.
