If you are not using the graduations on the cups you can clean and reuse household containers. Personally I use sour cream, yogurt and cottage cheese containers for mixing polyester and epoxy resins. They can be reused just like the cups Andy used, but since you already have them around the house they are free. I quit cleaning brushes a long time ago for two reasons. One - The cost in solvents to properly clean a brush can get pretty high. and Two - once you use some solvent to clean a brush, you have to dispose of the solvent. That can be expensive and it is a pain. I switched to foam brushes years ago for most applications and for better finishes I found a brand of cheap natural bristle brush called "The Fooler" that works very well and at $2-$3 each they are disposable. Yeah they shed a few bristles, but there are ways around that. A big money saver comes when working with wood. I NEVER order wood. I always go to the lumber yard and pick out the individual planks I need. I also take the time to work out my cuts so I can buy only what I need. That reduces my waste drastically. Yeah, it takes more time, but I am retired.

I started in 74 in a small manufacturer in South Dartmouth, Ma. Back then we had heavy paper buckets (small, med, & large). we used them for resin, gelcoat, paint & varnish. Then in early 80's the plastic pot came into use & you couldn't get the paper anymore. I loved the paper pots because you could clean out the inside, let the solvent evaporate & use them again & again. When plastic pots started we found our cost went way up because we were told "Use it & toss it". After a while we started cleaning the plastic & that helped. Still liked paper better.

You can find the metal rulers with ounces& CC's. Use that in your papaer cup mixing your gel coat or resins. Ive had mine for 20 years. Amazon has them.

If there's one thing I've always liked about this channel, it's that it "keeps its feet on the ground." That is, it deals with real problems and real solutions available to almost anyone. After cleaning good brushes with mineral spirits, washing them with hand soap has always worked well for me.

I pour the measured items into paper coffee cups, and mix and use in there. If it's resin, I have about 4 cups on the go, and by the time I've used the 4th one, the 1st one has set up and I don't bother cleaning it and just pour mire in on top. By the time I'm done done with the cups, they are at least 1/3 full of hardened resin. I then extract the block of solid resin and if it is large enough, I'll machine or cut it into whatever shape I need to make a little doobry for whatever. I have a bucket of blocks of cured resin in the corner of the shed and they are so useful for all sorts of things. Lastly, I'm not throwing away plastic into the trash. The plastic measuring cups can be cleaned with acetone and reused multiple times. Great content Andy, thanks!

I should have bought stock in chip brushes before my project with the many small 8oz to 12oz batches I did. Thankfully my project is almost done. Only have to glass the icebox cover then my fiberglass work is done. Also I'd like to add to your cup demonstration that at least in my case I left the brush right in the cup and was able to pull the material right out with the brush nice and slow. Wish I would have figured it out sooner because acetone is $20 a gallon. Thank you Andy your videos have helped my project look like it was done by pro.

Andy: I have started a project restoring a 1968 starcraft 14' seascamp, now, first This is my 1st aluminum boat project, I didd an old wooden boat with my grsndfather, but aluminum is a lot different, anyways, I,'ve tried to do my homework, but every where, they used wire wheels, I didnt think that wss a good idea, this boat isnt in bad shape, I actuslly took it out several times, for 3-4 hours , hsd maybr a gallon in the boatfrom towards the bow, any ways I found it had about 1 coat of paint over, original manufactuers paint, getting back on point, i tried the electric palm sander, and by hand, then came scross a nylon wheel, like wire wheel, I think it did a better job, stripping the paint thsn the sander or wire wheel, also did try some paint stripper, but fews wete not good for me( have some serious allergies, to chemicsls, so my question is would you consider this a better option?. I do a bit of in shop machine work. I started cutting down paint brushes to use as "chip brushes" . Used for brushing away metal chips. I found a large box of chip brushes at Harbor Freight cheap. I think they will work great with glass. I even use them for BBQ and throw away. Cheap lol

Me too, but thinking about it, it's at the edges where the resin breaks off and sticks to the cup. Coat the entire inside and there are no edges except at the rim. So, a new procedure, brush the remaining resin to coat the entire inside.

I have used a 50/50 mix of Di water and denatured alcohol for preping for paint. I use paper cup's with a paint ruler. They make many types of these rulers. Metal one are my favorite clean then off and keep them for years.

We use plastic “cups” for Gelcoat. Yes you use more cups but they are pennies to buy compared to the commercial cups. Also with regards to brushes and rollers . We have a drum full of about six inches of acetone which these live in after use. The important thing is the drum needs a lid which must be kept on to limit evaporation.

If you are using an expensive brush, dip it in 100% thinner beforre you paint. Then remove as much thinner as you can. Makes clean up 5X easier.

I don't buy many graduated cups, I use Cool Whip bowls, butter tubs, etc from the kitchen. They're free. Not graduated but I'm usually mixing epoxy from metered pumps so I don't graduations. I get at least three or four uses before they crack. Best one was at work once the vending machine guy had a whole case of cardboard soup bowls that got contaminated. He was going to pitch them but I got them instead. Had me set up for mixing bowls for like a year.

I have 20 cups I use for glassing.. n I let them fully dry n then squeeze n crack the dried contents out.. they normally come out mint n ready to reuse

To save cost, time and project weight, how do you decide what weight of cloth and how many layers are needed to get a strong enough lay-up for a deck, reinforcing, etc. How do you decide what coring material and thickness to use to reduce the layers of glass, rather than having a solid lay-up? How did you decide the glass and coosa board schedule for the transom on the Bertram? Thanks.

about reuse gelcoat containers, i reused my container a bit to much and the paint got ruined but on the other hand i dont have to use nonskid :D looks a bit dumb tho on the vertical parts but its uniformly uneven so yea hahaha

Thickening agent is ridiculously expensive. I’m restoring an old sailboat and I want to use a faring compound on the deck. I’ve been looking at wood flour, but then it occurred to me that wheat flour might work. Researching that idea online, I discovered that it is done successfully. I’d be interested in your opinion. If the flour is kept dry in a sealed container, how good is it for this purpose?

Done that. I usually have a vacuum attached to the DA sander so I capture most of the dust. Not to reuse, to save on cleanup. I have used it as a filler, it sands a little harder than you would want for fairing, but works pretty good as a gap filler. Wouldn't use it for anything critical though, you don't know what it's properties will be.
