Kylo Ken - John the axe of Zaslav is at it again. According to Variety WBD has decided to kill the Batgirl movie. Apparently the film was a project that was under the old regime and the new powers that be at WBD didn't feel that the film was big enough to be worthy of theatrical run yet at the same time it was to expensive to put it out on HBOMAX. Therefore they're just going to take a tax right off on it and scrap the film. How do you feel about Zaslav taking the axe to such a high profile project? What Kris said about test screenings is also important. Scorsese’s Goodfellas was test screened and it tested very poor, and that was a Warner’s film. Can you imagine if they cancelled that and around the same time, one of Halle Berry’s first films was a Comedy at Warner’s called Strictly Business and it tested very high and Warner’s thought they had a hit on their hands, and it was a critical and commercial disappointment.

They wrote themselves in a corner here by making the very first Flash movie so essential to the entire dceu. At this point they need to release Flash just to make all the changes they’re about to make in-universe. If anything they just need it to recast Ezra. Seems like they won’t be going forward with the Keaton plan made by the previous regime and that would have required them to do reshoots with whoever they actually want as Batman and that would have been even more money they had to spend for that. I’m not really bummed about Keaton, since I only really wanted to see him in Flash as a multiverse Batman and not the main DCEU Batman. I still hope they do keep Ben Affleck, but still the way they’re keeping Ben is affecting too many people. I wasn’t exited for Flash either cause of Ezra and the leaks saying that basically Ben and Henry are gone and Batman and Superman were gonna be essentially removed a few movies after Flash in favor of making Batgirl and Supergirl the de-facto Batman and Superman of the DCEU. I don’t wanna see a DC cinematic universe without Batman and Superman being on the league. I feel for the cast and crew of this movie. It sucks that something they put so much work into will just never be released now essentially wasting their time. while all these decisions recently seem harsh I do have to agree with John here that the previous regime was fucking stupid. We got announcement after announcement of movies no one wanted while leaving the fate of our favorite heroes like Superman and Batman unclear for years. Now as for something probably no one is talking about the Constantine series coming out I kinda hope they axe that too. They had the perfect John Constantine in Matt Ryan, but they’re going with a recast John with a diversity hire (that wasn’t the thing that pissed me off I don’t really care what ethnicity John is) l. The main things K hated was that not only did they not consider the actor that has made John Constantine as great as he is in live action Matt Ryan, but apparently they’re trying to not include the religious aspects of Constantine and focus on horror. Doesn’t sound bad I know, but anyone that knows John knows that Hell and demons are absolutely crucial to his character and story. He is damned to hell, which is such a huge aspect of what makes John who he is. Removing that just doesn’t make sense. Demonolgist and excorcist is literally his job description. Anyways I hope these decisions clean up the crap surrounding DC’s reputation. I only hope that the HBO Max shutdown doesn’t mean that all the DC shows on there are cancelled. I don’t want to see Peacemaker for example cancelled.

It’s funny that John was so critical towards Collider about letting go of all their employers and let them all find out on the internet and called it distasteful, yet when this has happened to the people who worked on Batgirl he calls it great leadership from Zaslav. These people worked their heart and soul into this movie, the outcome of whether it was gonna be good or bad is totally irrelevant. While I understand what you’re saying, the Collider thing and this, are two completely different situations. With the Collider debacle, people found out they lost their jobs over the internet, where as with Batgirl people didn’t loose their jobs, they just found out over the internet that the film they worked on is being scrapped. Now there’s no denying that both situations suck and are horrible, but comparing the two as though they’re on the same level is just pointless.🤷‍♂️

The "outcome of whether it was gonna be good or bad" is not totally irrelevant. Case in point: Batman v Superman. Regardless of how you felt about BvS, that movie had a huge impact on how the DCEU moved forward and is often seen as the main reason the DCEU is in the mess it is right now.

I disagree wholeheartedly with John on this one. It’s one thing if it hadn’t been made but it was almost finished. Even if they are changing paths they can let the old regime finish its last few projects and change once it’s done. Why would talent want to work with WB after that, it speaks volumes what it might be to work for them with this new regime. And I know it’s not the case but the optics of it isn’t great either, of it being a minority lead and directors. Why would people want to work with them if there isn’t at least that assurance they got your back.

The only real reason I could see for completely axing this is to avoid the general public being confused about what universe it takes place in. This is a horribile move & John knows that. If he wasn’t blinded by his love for Zaslav, he would see that he’s clearly in the wrong here. We know from past reactions of his to similar situations (ScarJo, WB streaming, Pixar streaming), that he would feel differently if this was Chapek. Chapek axing The Little Mermaid remake after poor test screenings to save the reputation of the Disney brand. I just know for certain that if this was Chapek doing it, that John would feel completely different. He would go on about how Chapek is against talent & how Disney would loose all their talent if they contiuned this way. But no, because it’s Zaslav, he calls it „real leadership“? Are you fucking kidding me? A bunch of people worked on this film for 2 years and they deserve to let the audience be the judge of their work. I don’t know why any creative would want to work together with a studio that just axes projects (without talking to the directors prior, like what the FUCK???) after completing shooting.

John's metaphor about ordering steak at a restaurant is quite good, but it could even be extended. What happened with the Batgirl movie is more like the management of the restaurant making the decision of not serving an overcooked steak to their customers. Sure, some fans/patrons may consider this disrespectful to the chef, but the management is paying the chef anyways, and the management isn't obligated to serve anything that the chef happens to prepare in that kitchen. So, when the management decided to not serve it, the steak was cooked, and the chef was working on the plate arrangement. They will be criticized by the general public if they release it at all because Ezra Miller represents the most toxic aspects of this new identity culture. Middle Americans didn't like him and what he represents, even before his recent antics. I think they should just shelve the movie, as Miller is getting more bad publicity by the day. But if they don't, it's because they believe that it can still make money. Everything is about money. But I suspect the new leadership at WB is starting to see the writing on the wall regarding "woke" agenda-driven filmmaking. I think the biggest thing people aren't realizing is that WB was in massive debt when Discovery bought it. I think under normal (or rather more favorable) circumstances, they would've still released Batgirl or even spent some more money and time trying to fix it up a bit. They are both equally well known due to the same medium popularizing them outside of just comic readers. And both equally became jokes over the course of time and stopped being used in other mediums due to being thought of as 'old and corny'. People don't think about them anymore but the Wonder Twins cartoon was immensely popular in it's time, it's just a gap in the generations that feel that way so now they seem D list to younger consumers. Movies get cancelled all the time. Its happened thousands of times. People who work on movies know there is always a chance that their work may get scrapped. You all act like this is something new

What don’t you understand. The flash movie is an actually good movie, batgirl is terrible. The flash cost 150 million at least more than batgirl, he’s not going to kill a movie that expensive. It also provides a clean slate for the new dc universe he wants to build. Use your brain.

Zazlav has the right mindset. Completely fix all the problems of the old guard THEN go ahead with their plan. He is playing catch up cleaning up the messes of the previous execs. I applaud the move.

I was waiting to hear them do this too. Is Ezra's contract this rock solid? He must have an incredible lawyer doing some serious legal gymnastics with the level of negative publicity he's bringing to the movie. I don't care in general if an actor is an ass irl but at this point Ezra is making people NOT want to see the movie. In any other job the employee costing the company to lose high amts of customers would have been let go. Where is Ezra's getting this plot armour from?

I don't think they can trash it because actors and filmmakers are probably signed to get bonuses from box office for the movie, and they can sue if they are not paid accordingly if the movie is cancelled

Take out of the equation the money side of things, this is an entire team's whole year of work that will never get to see the light of day. If they were properly payed then that's fine, but it doesn't take out the fact that this is a statement and a precedent which indicates there is no care about quality or giving filmmakers new opportunities - the only objective is profit, and that's it. Its not only anti thetical to the base of film itself, its an insult to anyone who poured their effort into this movie regardless of the quality in the final project.
