Had to have been the codec calls in MGS1. All of that dialogue gave the character dimensions unseen in games of the time.

He called himself John when Ocelot asked what his name was. But he IS named Jack. And yes, You play as Big Boss (goes by Naked Snake in this game), but if you select "I like MGS2!" when starting a new game, you start off with a Raikov mask (who, in this game, is a cameo of Raiden).

Raiden DOES suck. It was such a devastating blow when you realize that you only play as Snake in the ship. I remember being very, very pissed winding up at big shell as Raiden. It's still a MGS game so the gameplay is what you'd expect, and it's really a good game, but that was such a let down.

i like the cutscenes too.the only problem is that they're too long.but that is the only problem the cutscenes.the good part is you learn history.if you haven't been paying attention in class about the _____ war.(didn't want to ruin the war they're in)

Ya kno, people bitch about Raiden in MGS2 (rightfully so, cuz he was awful whiney), but the worst part of MGS2 was actually the Rose codec calls, since you HAD to call her to save, only for her to pour out all her insecure naggings for 4-5 minutes at a time. Oh, and the Emma escort mission.
