Hi Darren, loved the latest video it must have been fun to do. If you are in need of further material for future subject matter you could consider coming to West Wales ie Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. For years many learned scholars thought the Roman influence ended in Carmarthen with their fort and and town. However roads of antiquity have been found further west. A certain Martin Davies has just brought out a book titled " A few causeways more". Only a thought, we tend to be forgotten down here ! Also along with others the Romans were sea fareing as well.

Hi Bryn, thank you for your kind comments on the video and even more so for the invitation to West Wales. I would very much like to do that and will at some point. At the moment, having given up my business, I tend to go down to the south for videos that require an overnight as I have family there who put me up. Or put up with me! I’m acutely aware that I have neglected Wales and will address that. I’ve got a huge list of ideas there too. Thanks for the book recommendation too.

Hillforts may not have proved much of a challenge to the advanced tactics and equipment of the ruthless Romans, but they're more than just mounds on a hill. The banks, ditches and 'killing zones' for slingers and archers on the walls were fiendishly designed with regard to the landscape. So many hillforts are still impressive as it's bloody hard to build or farm up on those hills, although the Anglo-Saxons and others re-used the sites as defensive locations. Used to live at Folkestone where the early hillfort on the Downs had a Norman motte and bailey plonked inside it. Only hillfort I was a digger at was a biggie -- Danebury -- with Barry Cunliffe still around. The banks there were repaired repeatedly over hundreds of years, suggesting the tribes were constantly having a go at each other. Those video effects were fun -- the 'time travel' sequence reminded me fondly of early (pre-Woke Era) Dr Who. The Bright Eyes bit was unforgiveable -- I'm still traumatised by seeing that cartoon as a kid!
@WC21UKProductionsLtdКүн бұрын
Thank you and particularly for the classic Doctor Who comparison - I’m a big fan of the original programme, but have hated its 2005 on reboot. It would be good if they could do a small dig at Ladle Hill and tie down a date. If first Century BC, it would throw up intriguing possibilities linked to what was happening with the Attrebates, or even Julius Caesar and his attempted invasions. Fun to speculate in the meantime.
@PaIaeoCIive1684Күн бұрын
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Cheers. I'd always believed the Atrebates of Sussex and Hampshire were loyal to Rome -- their famous King Cogidubnus at Fishbourne sure liked Roman-style high living. In that case, the many hillforts there were to keep rival tribes out rather than the Romans. They must've known Rome would stomp their armies and hillforts after the failed Boudiccan rebellion and Vespasian took Maiden Castle in a day. Best to pay grain or gold to Caesar. Sorry for another wordy response! P.S. I re-tuned into Who as Capaldi was giving it a go, and it was mostly not bad despite The Message creeping into the script. . Plunged off a cliff with the shrill feminist afterwards though.

"The banks there were repaired repeatedly over hundreds of years, suggesting the tribes were constantly having a go at each other."?? Well it's hardly likely that it's only today's politicians who have worked out that a short sharp battle might get a bit bloody - but stealing someone else's savings sure beats years of hard graft to try to accumulate their own! 😉😊
@PASTFINDERexploringКүн бұрын
A dig providing some dating evidence would possibly solve quite a bit here. Oppossing Celtic tribes or a plague wiping out a large percentage of population could be the answer to it being unfinished. I tend to err on the 43AD invasion. They knew it was coming. The Attrebates became a client kingdom to Rome but they couldn't be sure of non aggression which they found later to thier cost. Fascinating site.

Hi Darren, Hedley and John, what a classic collab. Very funny from start to finish. Well done to you all. I'm not sure which James Bond villain Tweedy was, I want to write Scaramanga (there I've done it!) but with that "cat" I think it must be Blofeld!! With both Hedley and Paul out of the way Wessex Ways is now truly yours!! I'm wondering whether there was a fly in that transportation scene, should that be the case and should you find a half man half fly caught in a web in your back garden, well you know what to do. I would offer to bring some rocks but I think you've got more than enough nearby!!! Returning to the actual subject it was really well presented both on the ground and on the maps diagrams, drone clips and lidar. I was just thinking what a great video this would be for history or geography classes but with a PG rating for Bright Eyes it'll never happen. I've driven up the A34 many many times and remember seeing Watership Down signposted I didn't know there was so much more to see there. Why was it never finished? Maybe they just run out of time before being invaded. Perhaps they just holed up in Beacon Hill. Maybe Hedley will be able to tell us on his return ....... Hedley? ........ Hedley? ....... Hedley? ...... I can hear that deep laughter again!! A real cracker for the start of December, bring the Xmas number 1 I say. Don that Noddy Holder wig!! All the best!!

Additionally notice that Ladle is 2km from Beacon , exactly the same situation with Hambledon Hill and Hod Hill, and another couple : Battlesbury -Scratchbury, can you see pattern ?
@WC21UKProductionsLtd15 сағат бұрын
@@tombra7 thank you for explaining that, but I can’t say I really understand it. I guess you’re saying this was all planned and not a coincidence. I don’t understand how and why they would do that. It’s interesting.
@tombra713 сағат бұрын
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd same here, but I also don`t understand how computer works, but still using it though :) Coincidences in such numbers are not mathematically possible , and I only presented few examples, there is much more of that . Maybe we never find out how and why, but it should not stop us from discovering these patterns .

@tombra7 agreed - we must have an open mind! I’m very evidence driven in every aspect of life. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. That sort of thing. Strangely, I’m very open to wild speculation when it comes to antiquities, but there has to be something there to start with. I guess my natural instinct with these ideas about lines is that you can make any line on a map to seemingly join things up.

I thought there always seemed to be a lot of flattened rabbits along that stretch of the A34 … never knew Watership Down was a real place and never knew it was where it apparently is. The ideal location for a secret underground lair of an evil genius … lovely views from the periscope. Presumably, the perceived threat the locals might have started preparing against might well have been rumours (from a bunch of illegal emigrants sneaking across the channel from northern Gaul … I’ve read my classics… I know all about what Asterix got up to) of an impending surge of Italian tourists about to overwhelm the relatively limited resources of the local Premier Roundhouse facilities (known for their notorious blue coloured bedding and decorative themes with highly competitive rates in selected locations) ??
@WC21UKProductionsLtdКүн бұрын
Cheers David! Years ago I was surprised to learn that Watership Down was real, but Richard Adams knew it well. If only they could do a small dig up there to get a definitive date. Would be great if it was first century and we could speculate with confidence about the Attrebates, or even Caesar!

You missed your calling for producing "Carry On" Movies by 70 years. Darren reminds me of Syd James, I don't know why? "Carry on up the Hillfort" should have been the name of this video. If only you had included the Daleks and the Tardis and maybe Captain Scarlet. Hedley is an excellent side kick. I think there is a need for "lashings of food" and references to the Famous Five. A little Scotty terrier would make it more interesting for the animal lovers.

It wasn’t originally a hill fort and possiblly pre-Neolithic. The chalk gives it away. I’ll put money on it that it’s either on a lay line or there is a high level of turmeric currents at the appropriate time of year. They would flood the ditch, then a chemical reaction with the chalk will change the charge of the area in the circle resulting in clouds, lightning and then rain. Lightning produces nitrates when it oxidises the the air. Hence free fertiliser. It has to be done at a particular time though when the moon is close because it requires the gravity pulling the earth up as well in order to get the maximum currents.

Hi Iain, I think you’re right about that - when we get together, it ends up going extra mad! Anything really ancient in Glasgow to give me an excuse to film those Police Boxes?!

@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Not in the city center. The Antonine Wall is about an hour away, depending on traffic, but you really do need a clear weekend to drive from one end to the other to cover the 'sites', some of which are multiple hour visits, eg Rough Castle, to do it justice. At this time of the year you've only got about three hours of decent light. Of course during the summer you've got fifteen hours, if its not raining.

With whats is going on with drones in Ukraine shouldnt you have thought the pretend bombing by drone could be seen as a bit in bad taste?
@hedleythorneКүн бұрын
I don't think that we could have done any other way without it also having been "inappropriate" when inextricably linked with any of the problems or conflicts around the world. I support Ukraine and donate to a logistics fundraiser for their army and their use of drones, including the Mavic 3, are fundamental tools used for the defence of their nation. The ability of the Ukranian forces to be able to use them to save Ukranian lives should maybe be praised?
