WCBS-TV New York 5pm, 6pm, & 11pm News Opens - 1989

I've been flipping through these clips on YT and it's unreal how the WCBS team stayed by and large the same for years. The years 1990-2000 are hazy for me because of school but I kind of remember the old guard gradually leaving or being pushed out. I remember Warner Wolf (went to a DC station), Marsh, and Jim Jensen leaving for one reason or another. I grew up in the Bronx when cable wasn't available yet and when it finally arrived I only purchased a sports package. 24-hour news like CNN and Headline News weren't around to take away the mystique of 5, 6, and 11 o'clock news as a daily event. I don't know if this has colored my thinking but today's reporters just don't seem as sharp and attentive to their craft as in the past.

These are great opens but why did they drop "because anything can happen in New York" from the voice over?

Yeah - this set actually dates to 1985. When it was introduced, it had exposed pink walls in back of the blinds; when they went to "The First Team" music and opens in 1989, they added a skyline in back. They might have been putting that in in the 11pm clip, which explains why the blinds are down. Not a particularly great set either way, but the 1989 refresh looked a LOT better than the original 1985 version.

The interview set that came to be in 1987 had a skyline with a pink color to it. I could see that the set wasn't much to write home about, but actually the Depth of Field is rather understated by the broadcast design community, as the set was pretty huge in height. An anchor could walk by or stand up and not "break the set". A lot of sets then and now are obviously designed for the talent to sit a certain way whenever the tally light is on. Much less now with anchors standing up and the world of HD changed the way sets are designed.

Just moved up to the area and I love WCBS -- pretty amazing to see these clips from the year I was born with Ernie in them who is now on the NYC Fox affiliate.

The news team at WCBS-TV Channel 2 were indeed New York City's first news team! Duh!

I know this was 1989, but they actually had window blinds on the set? Really?

@pooka5472 I believe this was during the period shortly after he returned to WCBS (following a stint in rehab) as a "Senior Correspondent," eventually winning back his anchor chair in 1991...if memory serves me correctly. I'm too lazy to Google right now ;)

This was the last season Ch 2 aired Wheel of Fortune at 7:30

alot of station in that era had window blinds of a skyline? why was that

Yeah, I found the window blinds a little odd. I was expecting a night skyline photo in the background for the 11:00 news (makes sense).
