My Dad Guyo, I remember following you down the trail to watch you catch o'opu from the stream at Takatoi, Honomu. There is another stream near Hilo area where you fished for o'opu. I remember swimming in this pond while you fished. The water smelled of white awapuhi blossoms and that was the one time I witnessed your largest o'opu catch while with you. Maybe I don't remember the name of this stream because it was a secret spot. I also remember going fishing with you below the cliffs between Pepeekeo and Honomu. While you were roping the Ironwood tree for us to climb down you would tell me, " Guylyn, I hope the rats don't chew on this rope because this is our only way back up." I never told you this but while I looked at the knot before we went down I silently told myself nothing will touch that rope, me and my dad will make it back up and home. I remember standing right next to you at the cliffs edge at South Point while you reeled in Kahala, Ulua and Baracuda. I would look at your feet and the tip of you pole bent over to your piko and wonder how the heck are you balancing while fighting the large fish? Mana❤

I remember this song touched me when I was a child in the 70s. Didn't know why. Today it actually hurts to hear it. The meaning, especially as Jerry explains its not about ohana, it was written about the aina, is just too profound as Oahu changed over the decades.

Touched many of us as well! Get misty as soon as someone strums it. And, Jerry's explanation is perfect.

It's also about identity, and hoping you will be accepted when you return having discovered yourself. Remembering the social pressures of youth to be what they expect of you. And choosing to be yourself while hoping you still have a place at the dinner table when you come home.

We pine for home. We long for “development.” Complex technologies, education, International culture, new communications, travelers - they all pull or just push us away from contentment. Seems to me it’s songs like these we all should be learning, singing, crying about. If we went “home,”could any of us recognize it? How can we all create our own loving, nourishing, yet changeable homes, as we courageously travel onward as sacred, serviceable vagabonds?

Loving your response. Traveling inward grows our courage fo travel outward and onward as connected, sacred and contended souls.

I sold my white horse, Prince, to Donna, Jerry's sis. But before that, I remember riding him with Jerry, Donna and others along the ridges of Kahalu'u when the wild purple plums were ripe. Prince came home stained purple from the flying plums. Me too.
