WCW nWo Fall Brawl 1998 took place on September 13, 1998 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The event was headlined with the annual War Games match, but WCW made a few significant changes to the match this year; there are 3 teams of 3 competing in War Games this time around, and the "Match Beyond" has been completely removed. Pinfalls are allowed inside War Games and the match can end at any time. Team Wolfpac (Kevin Nash, Sting and Lex Luger) take on Team WCW (Diamond Dallas Page, Roddy Piper and The Warrior) and Team Hollywood (Hollywood Hogan, Bret Hart and Stevie Ray).
Elsewhere on the card Chris Jericho takes on mini-Goldberg, Juventud Guerrera defends his cruiserweight title against Silver King, and Rick Steiner vs Scott Steiner also takes place.
This video is part of the Wrestling Bios Reliving The War series.

Yeah....WCW was terrible after the finger poke of doom. Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Beniot and Booker T needed to be pushed more in 98. I didn't watch much WCW, but loved Jericho and rooted for him as a heel. 13:39

One of the few PPVs I convinced my parents to let me order because I wanted to see Warrior, then when he finally comes out, he never gets his hands on Hogan and security breaks them up IN THE MIDDLE OF A WRESTLING MATCH...it was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. My dad even tried to get his money back from the cable company lol

This PPV main event highlighted one of the main differences between WCW and WWF. That being WCW had no idea how to book a wrestling show. Had WCW had WWFs booking team. They would have won the war.

@@martynodonnell with the roster wcw had in 98 they should’ve. Think about this, the world champion wasn’t even at the ppv. They put the belt on goldberg & didn’t have any creative story’s for him.. wcw just had no idea what to do with this roster & it also didn’t help that everything had to revolve around the nwo which was dragged through the dirt by this point

@@MR.__G yeah if WCW had WWFs booking team. They would have won the war. They had no idea how to book a wrestling show. Which became increasingly apparent the longer the war went on. WCW had one good idea in the whole time at the top. The NWO along with turning Hogan heel, which got stale quick. They had very little else storyline wise. Which also became increasingly apparent the longer things went on. WWF were the better company during most of 97 and would remain so until WCW went out of business.

@@martynodonnell they basically had 2 impactful ideas (nwo/ goldberg streak) & ran both to the ground. There was no end game with nwo & they never focused on building goldberg’s promo or ring skills. This makes all the sense as to why they didn’t have him on the show. There was absolutely nothing for him.

That Steiner vs Steiner match/angle was also very classic WCW. Just taking too long to build up to a pay off, then not delivering on the payoff again to stretch it out even farther and then never delivering in the end.

I will always consider this probably the worst thing wcw ever did creatively. What was there, like, a 10 year build up? Unforgivable. Also quite brash to split up Harlem Heat and do nothing about it too the same year, they weren't Steiner level but just a level below.

This PPV is in a way a representation of how I felt about the promotion at the time. Everything I actually liked (Disco Inferno, Alex Wright, the Flock, Steiners and Buff, Cruiserweights, Jericho, etc) basically were treated like low effort filler, with the wrestlers themselves having to actually go hard at making it something more than subpar filler (Or people from the opener having to warn everyone to avoid even further injuries). And everything that I had minimal interest in was given a bunch of time, effort, and often was detrimental to the rest of the promotion, like the Main Event. And how the set up for it injured someone and ended their career. And it bothers me so much because... I LIKED Piper back in the day. Piper was awesome. But more than that? Well... he came up from the Territory I grew up in in the Pacific Northwest (living near Portland at the time). So he was kind of a known quantity growing up and when you'd mention Roddy Piper, well people knew him. It was kind of a generational bonding thing when he hit the WWF with parents telling stories about how they saw this match or that match with him before he went to New York. And we were cheering over his victories and all that. But something about that WCW run man. Something about it killed my interest in him. And I'm not really sure why. I suspect Hogan Booking where Piper seemed to exist just so Hogan could get one over on him from the WWF days. A kind of pettiness I think was also responsible in part for the Warrior's booking here. But man... My father and I used to eagerly watch every Piper match on TV back when I was a small kid. Good memories. But in the 90s? I felt almost ashamed to see him as I knew he'd get punked out in some way. Like here with the blackjack KO from Hogan effortlessly. And that's what the NWO Main Event picture was for me. Usually taking things I loved, like Piper, like Bret, Macho, etc. And then just destroying them. Particularly because I was never a Hulkamaniac, even as a kid.

Piper felt bitter all through that wcw run, it radiated through the screen. Felt like he didn't like wrestling anymore, but the money was great so he didn't turn it down.

I was there live for this and you're absolutely right. Fans did not care for this show. At all. No Flair. No Goldberg. Even though, to be fair, neither were advertised. And, as we saw, the matches weren't much to speak of. Now we know why Stevie Ray was even in the match-so he could take the pin from DDP. Because, they couldn't have Page pin Hogan or Bret or Sting,etc. I still maintain a lot of goodwill was lost due to the abysmal showing of Starrcade 97. After 3 months, fans finally turned over and watched WWF RAW instead of NITRO with the former finally beating the latter in the ratings. And due to seeing the main storylines were still centering around the same old guys with the same lame dq finishes. I'm sure you and most other fans know this already but it never gets any better. Bless you if you actually watch it all the way to WCW's demise in April of 2001.

I agree man. I was far and above a WWF nerd as well, and seeing the Warrior’s WCW run vicariously through this series and seeing it now just makes me feel so bleak about it. WCW just had this weird knack for making careers seem so mundane.
@G360LIVE
@G360LIVE Жыл бұрын
@@liquidswords2636 I think that's because the people booking the matches and writing the storylines were protecting a few wrestlers over anyone else, so someone like Bret Hart couldn't come in and tear things up. Sting couldn't come back and tear things up. Warrior couldn't come in and tear things up. That's what the fans wanted to see (which is probably why everyone got behind Goldberg, because he was allowed to do what they wanted), but the few wrestlers with all the influence wouldn't allow themselves to be shown up, at least not for too long. I mean, The Giant should've been a huge obstacle for any wrestler; he should've been the most feared guy at the time, but when you have other wrestlers body slamming him and making him look small, like just another guy only wider, then you can't eventually get too hyped for a Goldberg vs Giant match, for instance, because we've seen smaller guys beat The Giant.

Before this i was watching both companies back and forward. I always tended to lean more towards WWF anyway but WCW had guys i enjoyed - Dean Malenko, Eddie, Chavo, Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Booker T, Chris Benoit, Raven, Saturn, Kanyon, Disco Inferno, Kidman and Goldberg. I liked the mid-carders on WCW better than WWF's mid-carders but i liked the WWFs main eventers over WCW's main eventers.

From this story to Austin pouring drinks on Hall before Wrestlemania, to the Hawk stuff. I've never been a fan of using addicts personal problems in a story line. @@JRC99 The thing with Scott Hall was even worse than what's on the surface. I think you know what I'm talking about, but for those unaware: Scott Hall was taking Antabuse at the time. I think it's fine if a) the former addict is okay with it and honestly wants to do the storyline to foster public awareness and b) the storyline is executed well. This is a great series and it really highlighted just how quick Davey's life and career spiralled out of control culminating in the back injury at Fall Brawl. He was out of shape and looked disinterested and it's not even a year from the screwjob!

It's a shame that terrible injuries & their fallout soured that opening match, because not only did it have chinlocks & Der Big Bratwurst, it also had Neidhart trying to dance. That should have been fun, but instead it's remembered for ending Davey's career.

That Hall spot where he get sandwiched between the rings reminds of a spot in one of my favorite War Games matches were Arn is upside down with his head stuck between the two rings like a piledriver ! The rings were WAY closer together though ! Ha ha !

Man I have no clue why, but I always loved watching raven. Guy looks like a brawling street fight while having some of the most sharp & high level wrestling techniques.. Kind of wish raven was pushed to the main events with Hogan Nash or Goldberg

Completely agree using Scott halls personal addiction for views was in poor taste and if anything made it worse as it was now public and followed him into everything he did after this.
