Knife Making - Modern Tanto Knife -DIY Tanto from old file

In this video I'll show you how to make a Tanto knife out of an old file. My choice old file to make diy knife - because two groups of tool steels are used for the production of files: unalloyed improved steels with a carbon content of 1 to 1.3% (UYuA - U13A) or chrome-plated chrome steels ShKh15 or 13Kh.
First of all, in the fire we need to release the steel, that is, heat it to a high temperature. Steel tempering is a stage of heat treatment and is used to reduce excessive rigidity, reduce brittleness and eliminate internal stresses in the metal. After heat treatment, it is easier to process the file.Typically, steel products are tempered at temperatures that are several times lower than the quenching temperature, while maintaining the martensitic structure that ensures the hardness of the metal. This heat treatment is mainly applied to cutting tools and other tool steel products.
When the file is heated, we bend it, give it a shape close to the template that we made from plywood. I make the template for one reason, you can feel the shape of the knife before it is made.
Then I cut out the contour of the knife with a grinder. I remove all the bumps, I use a belt sander, which is attached to the table with clamps.
I use a wet stone grinder to sharpen my knife.
For the manufacture of the handle of the knife I use walnut and maple veneer. First, I glue several layers of veneer to one of the sides of the workpiece. After that, with a router, I cut out a niche for a knife.
Having glued two wooden parts of the knife, I cut it in half on the mitre saw. Then glue the base of the knife to the handle with epoxy glue. To better fix the handle, I drill a hole for the dowel. I cover with oil wax from Osmo. This video is not a guide and does not call for making a knife. This knife was made for filming a video, after the filming was completed, it was destroyed.
Thanks for watching.

These are the types of videos that will not scare off newbies to knife making as you are using everyday tools and not these big expensive things that others seem to think you need to make a good knife when that isn’t the truth. You can make a knife with tools that nearly every average workshop would have. Great video and I will be watching more…. New subscriber here 👍🏻👍🏻

Old files are pretty amazing for being reborn as a knife. Heating it up in a reall coal fire even does a pretty good job on the final result. Also those guys are straight, in shape and won't bend during hardening / tempering. They are stock straight and stay like that. So wour work isn't gone in the final moment... Top steel for a really well doing knife.
