This is an aircheck (with commercials) of the nationally broadcast Hurricane Katrina special from WDSU-TV in New Orleans. It shows what our TV station had to do to bring our viewers coverage of this devastating storm. In many cases, staff members discover that their neighborhoods, their homes and the homes of loved ones are destroyed as new video of the destruction comes into the station for us to show our viewers.

This is an excellent documentary. I lived in St. Bernard Parish and appreciate that it was featured heavily.

I lived in Mobile, Al. I was in the 5th grade. When they finally re-opened schools weeks after the storm it really opened my eyes to the magnitude of what happened in New Orleans because we had so many kids that had to come over from Louisiana and Mississippi. At least I saw people caring for other human beings and doing the right things. Thank God that the surge only reached 12 ft here because we were able to rebuild and help.

I have nothing but admiration for the reporters, cameramen and people who went out in the boats to save people and who were reporting in the thick of the storm. They saved lives and gave us pictures that we wouldn’t have seen if it wasn’t for their bravery. They helped an awful lot of people and documented social history.

Can’t believe Hurricane Katrina will be 18 this year, Almost 20 years and nothing has been the same ever since. A very devastating and monstrous storm.

I was in the Louisiana national guard when katrina hit. The entire state guard was deployed at the time of katrina in Iraq. We watched from a chow hall during meal times(if we was in from mission) as our homes got wasted away. I remember you could hear a pin drop. We didn't get home till late september. That's why there wasn't an immediate state response . We was in Baghdad....

New Orleans Arena was relatively undamaged in the storm but was unusable in its normal state for several months. The arena had its design tested by a wind design firm prior to its opening.

I’ve seen a lot of Katrina video. It’s all horrible. And it’s a disgrace what they did to the people. But early in this video, when it showed a golden retriever holding onto a tree that completely broke my heart.

As a director at WDSU-TV, I was at WAPT when we broadcast from those facilities during Katrina. After a few weeks, they moved all of us to Hearst's WESH-TV in Orlando for about 6 more weeks. My wife took our 2 kids to Houston and enrolled them in school there. When they returned home, my wife's parents had to live at our house because their home was destroyed in floodwaters. When I finally returned to Louisiana and got back to WDSU, we were working beside strangers because so many of our co-workers chose to stay away. Luckily, Hearst sent many great people from WAPT and other Hearst stations to fill the void. Hearst even gave us bonuses if we had returned and stayed at WDSU for the year after Katrina.
