Can't overstate how helpful this demo and information was. As they say, the devil is in the details. Feeling just that much more educated now. Thanks!

If you use a shorter 0.25 needle (instead of the full length), it's actually really good. It isn't as flimsy. I've but mine down to 40mm, and it works like a charm. It doesn't help with the 3D printed WDT holder, because there's a void space in between, and that part would move too, and if you cut shorter, it'll be too short. What I do is use a cork from an empty whiskey bottle, use a paper clip, push it deep enough, I make 10 holes. Before I push the spring part in, I alight them all and cut at where the needles part are only 40mm, then send it down to smoothen the edges, so it doesn't scratch my portafilter as bad. It works like a charm.

The holder slack from using thinner needles shouldn't be a problem. You can wedge in a tiny bit of paper or resin to hold it firm.

Great job - thx a lot! it confirms my experiences (with .25, .30 -by Normcore v2.1 and v3.0- and a smaller no name .40 ). I choose the .40 especially for super fine espresso "powder", because even the .35 are bending, so that I have the feeling to have less direct control over the movements

Interesting! I use .4 now, but will consider stepping down a bit to avoid pushing the grounds around.

Thanks for the video. After you making me aware of dragging/sweeping the coffee grounds, I removed 4 needles (.30, I think), leaving 4 on the outside and 1 in the middle. It seems to still break the clumps but drag the coffee grounds a lot less. If you have any thoughts on this modification, please let me know. Thanks.

Using the same dose of grinds for all thicknesses doesn't show the differences. The grinds were first fluffed up by the 0.25, then the other sets simply cut through the work that the thinner pins did. Each set of sizes should have had there own freshly ground beans to prep. Still appreciate the time you put into this👍👍

Used just four 0.4 mm needles and a cork. The pattern is like decent recommends it. Works amazing. Imo too much needles cause these channeling problems or push too much coffee.

Thanks for this great video. I’ve printed off my own version of your tool. The original thicker two piece version however I was wondering if you could help me figure out why my needles won’t extend out beyond the bottom very far. I picked up some very similar versions of needles but they only come out about half as far as I would expect

How much does portafilter size matter? Would 0.35mm be stiff enough for 54mm, or would the added depth make 0.4mm better?
@saltrocklamp199
@saltrocklamp199 2 жыл бұрын
I currently use 0.4 in my BBE and it seems stiff enough. I was planning on trying 0.35 because it seemed like 0.4 shoved the coffee around too much, almost causing it to pile up. I am not worried about them bending too much.

the title is a little misleading. you are talking more about needle flexibility as a result of the thickness (and of course material), not about the thickness itself.

I accidentally got shorter needles that are .25mm but only 60mm in length to it seems to be a decent compromise. but I think still a little thicker is better.

Nice Demo, I thought the 0.35mm needles handled the task the best. Was also wondering how paper filters would hold up against WDT. Do you pre wet the filters?

Yes, I have an example of my paper filter workflow in my "modern espresso" video. I prewet then tap dry w/ a towel.

I am actually mixing different thickness of needles to get the benefit of each of the sizes and not a bad outcome of just using one size (different coffee roast & grind results needs a different set of needles sizes to face each situation). For that reason, I don't believe in a one size needle that does it all !

Might seem like nitpicking but channeling is a major problem if you’re making real espresso using the coffee to control the water flow, with channeling, water finds areas of less resistance and the coffee is not extracted evenly, causing a poor shot. This technique is one of few that seems to work and not just in theory
