This one’s actually sorta easy for anyone to recreate. It’s not the glass that caused the flash but the pressure generated between the two spheres. You can actually burn a piece of paper of you hold it up and clap two steel balls together with your hands due to the mass being transferred into a tiny spot causing extreme but temporary heats. At those speeds and mass I can only imagine that spot was temporarily the temperature of the surface of the sun.

The fact that the glass sparked like that just shows how much energy was in that collision. Fascinating stuff.
@bleachbleachBLEACHER9 ай бұрын
The thing is - that's something you can get with spheres in general. Because when you strike two hard spherical objects into each other, there is only the SMALLEST point of actual contact between them at the edge of the curve, and that instigates a moment of intense heat. Just look up 'burning paper with steel balls' to see the same kind of thing on a smaller scale. So with these glass balls - with how fast they were chucked at each other, I assume with all the force of that collision collecting at such a tiny point of contact is what resulted in the two of them not just sparking but utterly annihilating each other instead of just going Coney Joney.

@@legro19 That's a completely different effect. You're spalling a small bit of steel from the ball which heats that tiny fragment up immensely, and given the small size and availability of oxygen, it turns into a spark. Glass doesn't have the mechanism to produce a spark in the same way that steel does. I mean, you're trying to contradict something that's absolutely science based, repeatedly demonstrated, and explained beyond a reasonable doubt by comparing it to how a completely different material reacts to similar forces. That glass explosion at the contact point was great. Having two science teachers there was a bonus for their student to see later. Flash bang. My dad made blasters in the late 80's, we fired a ball of rags across the street and put a dent in the cyclone fence. The air tank slid back 10ft. Great vid guy's.

This video had that old school HR energy and feeling. Love everything you guys do but this one took me back. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Cant say it enough. How GREAT!

Possibly your most amazing episode - how you persevered in that snow and cold, the paint slowy and the glass balls. As a biologist my mind is just completely boggled by what happened there. Amazing how you keep producing amazing content.

The lighting up of the glass balls is a compression "explosion" I think the flash only happens at the point of impact, but being glass the light is visible as it's being refracted before the balls shatter.

The glass balls slowie was up there with the rbb/giant axe head slowie. Epic! Seriously, one of HR's best slowies ever. Thanks for ALWAYS bringing awesome content, boys!

Gav and Dan saw the same phenomenon with their elephant gun experiment, 82,000 frames per second still was too fast.
@potatosordfighter6669 ай бұрын
People underestimate things like the speed of light of the speed of breaking glass. The speed of light is many many times faster than glass. Slomo guys have a video called "The longest 5 seconds on youtube" which is a stationary, perfectly in focus, 19 1/2 hour video, a full raw dump of the entire 5 seconds of recording at 343,000 FPS of a pyrex glass measuring cup breaking. At 343,000 FPS the 3-4 inch pyrex glass handle breaks in under 5 seconds out of the NINETEEN AND A HALF HOUR recording. Even at 82k FPS, no one was seeing anything of value.

This was fer sure the best video you guys have done for years. Welcome to Montana from Dan in Kalispell.

Gavin and Dan potentially had a triboluminescence moment a few months ago when they did the Kentucky ballistics guy shooting an elephant rifle in gel, absolutely wild to find out in this video what potentially occurred there. Love the intentional and unintentional crossovers!
@timmytommy29219 ай бұрын
They are totally different phenomena. Whats happening with the ballistics gel is a diesel explosion. The bullet creates a huge cavity of air and antomized oil and polymer. As that cavity collapses, the air heats up to the point of igniting the oil and polymer in a small explosion, like ina diesel engine. I’m surprised they weren’t aware of that. As someone that watches a lot of gun videos, it happens basically every time clear gel is shot with a rifle and there are a ton of super slow mo videos covering it.
@Exasperaties9 ай бұрын
@@timmytommy2921 I'm talking about the initial point of contact on the gel with a flash of light, not once the bullet was going through.
@ZandarKoad9 ай бұрын
I don't think the explanation aligns with the evidence. "Materials scientists have not yet arrived at a full understanding of the effect, but the current theory of triboluminescence-based upon crystallographic, spectroscopic, and other experimental evidence-is that upon fracture of asymmetrical materials, charge is separated. When the charges recombine, the electrical discharge ionizes the surrounding air, causing a flash of light." It seems that the flash is occurring well before any material fracture could occur. And is material "fracture" even possible with ballistic gel? Perhaps on some technical level... It seems as though the effect is purely a result of the electrical forces at play, not mechanical. It's just too fast. Maybe the introduction of small, disparate voltage potentials is rapid enough to induce a temporary plasma state or other kind of extreme photon excitation, nearly instantaneously, until that voltage potential is equalized.

HR boys, this happens to be the best of the best videos you've done on this channel!! Everyone worked well together in the extreme cold weather. I hope you had plenty of tea and rest. This was really a battle of the cannons. The finale of the day (and SLOWLY OF THE DAY) is one of the best ever!! Gav and Dan: good luck. Ball is in your court. You regret not being there now. I'll mail you a humble pie if you want!!

Gav and Dan should absolutely try this again with their gear. That lightning flash was absolutely amazing. The explanation at the ending helps a lot. Imagine given more data(more frames) what we could do with this.

At first I thought the "rare phenomenon" was at 9:26 with the basketball changing direction without additional external effect. Then I thought the "rare phenomenon" was at 13:33 with the sparks on the right paint cannister. Then I thought the "rare phenomenon" was 19:25 with the glass balls colliding. But obviously, the hay segment at 22:05 was the true phenomenal part of this video.

Technically the bright flash originates from the impact point, as the pressure generated by the impulse becomes so high that the material ionizes and turns to plasma.
