I’ve been doing mission work in Honduras for about 12 years. Every year when I take a new team, I require them to read a book called Toxic Charity. It speaks a lot about exactly what Keith was ranting about. If we do gift the children or communities with anything such as candy or a supply need, we always leave it with the local pastors or orphanage leaders to give as they see appropriate after we leave. It’s great advice for cruisers as well. Yell it out for the people in the back Keith!!

You know Keith, it takes courage to have an opinion nowadays. Right or wrong is irrelevant, telling it how you see it, opens the discussion. Good on ya mate! …BTW I agree with you.

Why does it take courage to have an opinion. I would say it takes knowledge, experience and a willingness the argue your case as well as listening on the counter-case. There is no courage in that.
@richardbell5792
@richardbell5792 Жыл бұрын
Think it's a complex topic. There's only a discussion if the person with the opinion is open to listening to counter arguments and evolving their own thinking as a result. I agree that doling out candy and other "crap" freebies can create dependence and a culture of begging, so not good if you come and go and can't follow through, doesn't help long term just creates headaches for others. However, gifts that provide the means to survive e.g. fishing hooks, old sails, tools, or particularly anything that supports education e.g. notebook, pen, actually reduces dependence on passing cruisers and is a good thing. It's the old "give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish" analogy. But good strategy for generating YT comments Keith🤣

@@richardbell5792 I completely agree . We wud give books, clothes, an if we had veg that we weren't going to use . We don't eat junk so wudn't give that.. but I always make bags of education an necessities string hooks solar chargers... Things like that.... Intent to me is important as well as context...!! Sadly we live in an unequal world... An til you've walked a mile in someone's shoes judgement is for God not for us .. I have met some great ppl. Been invited to huts, houses an tho by western standards these ppl wud be monetarily poor. In reality are the most richest an most in tune with mother earth. Which is how we are supposed to be. This is my opinion an feeling. I've seen many Cruisers raise money to rebuild schools in hurricane ravaged islands. An get hands on with every part ... An then there are the others ... More money then good sense.... So I live by kindness is free daily give til your heart is full!! ✌🏼💗😊⛵

The fact that you recognize this is that you have more wisbom and i growing up with a parent of the same stripe and having insights of better paths to follow and persons to admire, gave me life goals to set for myself. I also had to settle inside myself at a young age that basically I was on my own!! So you have that first step, the wisdom to follow better examples! Set your life goals and dig deep! Honesty of your statement is already epically the best way to lay that foundation!!!

Bill, are you familiar with the KZbin channel “Gen Z Talks” ? It’s a young kid asking his dad questions. His dad is a lot like Keith and a contractor that has a ton of common sense and knowledge and he’s usually tinkering with something when his son is asking him questions. Check it out. This guy is a much more unfiltered version of Keith And the comments are incredible. It hasn’t been around very long, but it has become a very popular KZbin channel. And there’s almost always, or seems like there is, classic rock in the background. You could put this kid’s dad and Keith on a stage and charge admission! It would be fantastic.

I worked for an international NGO that used volunteers from (mostly) the U.S. and Western Europe. Volunteers would always ignore our requests that they not give gifts or tokens directly to individuals. They would always argue that they thought our local org would “keep it for themselves” (as they were being warmly hosted by said organization). It was maddening, and those ad hoc “gifts” always created resentment and conflicts among the community being “helped.”

Excellent point Keith, I spent some time in Egypt some years ago, and I completely get what your saying, the level of begging was astounding, it's learned behaviour, you keep giving in, nothing will ever change. Information is power, people need to learn the skills to acquire their needs in life. You're a brave man to come out with your opinion on social media, it could cause all sorts of backlash, I applaud to you for saying it. I worked in New Guinea in the 1980's. We were told by company management to pay the local rates for anything we purchased from the locals in order not to upset the local economy where the locals would end up not being able to afford their own produce because of market distortions caused by us being over generous. We never discarded any materials used for packaging when bringing in materials for our project. All that ended up building shelters for the locals. Working in that environment was humbling and a reality check which I carry to this day.

That and the fact that NO ONE in this forum seems to appreciate that those kids jumping into the dingy to play, were in Yemen! This is a country torn by civil war. It is a very dangerous country for US citizens to travel to, especially on a boat where there is no easy escape. They should be grateful to have made it through unscathed but instead are going on complaining about how someone else giving those kids candy, made for an uncomfortable arrival. This is a family disconnected with many of the realities of the world they travel in. Don't mess with Texans!

WE AGREE with the charity aspect. We spent over several months in Ecuador in the high mountains, giving technical aid is better!!! All the villages we were trekking to in order to have some medial aid, it was the same! It is to note that we had very little to give as we were trekking the medical equipment and not personal items and you do desire to give something, we were told not to by our local guides!!!! Instead we realized that chickens and rabits were better to trade for local handmade goods! Trade is better than charity! So that not only were we trekking in with medical equipment we were now trading chickens and rabits for handmade hamocks!!! This lead to starting a connection with a crafts based trading that had these villages able to form cooperatives that would be able to send crafts to Italy to sale to help with building a smale clinic rooms in those villages and a small schoolrooms, very small! This trade continues now 20 years later and these villages could better sustain themselves! We had to teach how to care for the live stock. One village they had a feast and cooked all the rabits and chickens that night and the guide had to explain that the animals were to start breeding programs! I guess we did not make that clear. So we also had to aid them in education of the hutches and coops and construct them and hold classes. Very little could grow at those altitudes so even we had to educate ourselves! It goes back to the old adage "give them a rabbit and they eat for a meal, teach them to breed and they can sustain themselves!" I am more offended that the younger people do not think past their feelings!!! Doing something to feel better for yourself does only that, it does nothing for those people the next days, months and years!!! Bravo!!!

I feel as though you have every right to do what you feel is best for you and your family but, it is none of your business what others do or don’t do. You are not an all knowing authority on what’s best for everyone one else. Giving to another is an act of love and kindness. If the receiver of the gift does not use it to allow them to grow then, that is on them. God always recognizes the gift of love being given to another. Everything happening here on earth has a spiritual meaning/cause/effect and your opinions are not the end all-be all for everyone.

It is okay to give a person who had something tragic happen to them to help them get back on their feet.....but then afterwards....they need to go and stand on their on two feet!! We all have our struggles in life and that is how we learn to grow and do better for ourselves....and it makes us stronger.
