Everybody is up in arms over the return policy at Mercari, but from what I can tell they still only have a 72 hour time frame to return it in, not 30 days like eBay. So they have 3 days, that is it. Why does that bother people? I hate the 30 day policy over on eBay.

I don't think a lot of resellers understand the true financial implications of passing the fees over to buyers. Not only will buyers lower the price they're willing to pay for an item, the seller will no longer be able to claim fees as a deduction on their taxes.

@@pnw-coast it matters a lot at tax time. Say you made $3,072 for 2023. Your platform expenses (fees + shipping) were $1,333. Your taxable income is not the $3,072. You deduct the platform expenses. Your taxable income (before other expenses) would be $1,739. With Mercari, you will not be able to claim fees as a deduction, yet your asking price will be based on the fact that the buyer has to pay for processing and shipping if you require the buyer to pay for shipping.

By lowering the asking price on Mercari to still be competitive, the seller is still paying the fee, but it's a phantom fee that they cannot take as a deduction.

I don't mind the new Mercari return policy (I already offer returns for any reason on Ebay) and I don't entirely mind the $2 fee. It was the middle of the night 4 hour notice that ticked me off. Even companies that are routinely ranked as the most hated in the country (looking at your Comcast) give their customers adequate notice before a fee change. Mercari did it in the middle of the night for a reason. It was bad business and makes them less trustworthy than they already were.

I don't like to leave money in the platform accounts because you never know when they might decide to freeze your account without giving you a reason. Mercari is notorious for pulling shenanigans and I'm just not here for it. All of this just confirms I did the right thing (for me) when I stopped using that platform. That tasks thing happens to me and if I start to feel overwhelmed I freeze or will just feel exhausted.

I'm a new-ish seller, so I don't have 700 Mercari listings like you. I didn't want to play their game, so I went in and adjusted each item's price slightly (maybe 90?). Also, with my new listings I'm paying for shipping (which I don't do in Ebay). I figure that might keep me competitive and I can adjust to my actual shipping costs rather than overpay when I estimate shipping details (incorrectly) without being able to adjust it. Hopefully that all makes sense. I'd take advice, though! - Also, the $2 withdrawal doesn't bug me as I don't need to do it very often - only when it's worth it. 1-2x/mo.

My biggest with Mercari was how they were going to do returns. It said they were paying for labels in the terms of service and then in FAQ it said Mercari Labels will be covered for all orders that use prepaid labels. I ship on my own and was thinking I had to pay for return label. I got an answer that they will pay for label, so I’m fine now. $2 fee sucks, but in same I usually only cashout for $100 or more.

I read somewhere that Mercari has return shipping figured into the original shipping, so there is no cost to sellers to accept returns. If that is how it works, then I'm fine with it. Just relist it and sell it again.

Discounting all your Mercari items by 10% isn’t technically an even wash by passing the 10% fee onto the buyer. If you had an item listed at $10.00 and lowered it by 10%, the new price is $9.00. But if someone purchases your $9.00 item and pays a 10% fee, their total is $9.90. Shipping and tax complicates things further, but I’m sure you get the idea.

My 3 year old granddaughter and I were taking a walk one evening and we always walked downtown, and checked out all 2 dumpsters on the way and on the way back we came home down the alley to check out the trumpet vines. Anyhoo, the house where the trumpet vines are, the owners are only there about once a month and they had been there that weekend bec their trash was FULL of vintage snow baby's, and vintage Christmas ornaments, all were still in the original boxes and 95% had never even been taken out of the boxes! We got 4-5 plastic storage totes full!! All in immaculate condition!

I wasn't a fan of how Mercari handled it. There was no real announcement. Mercari has much worse things. Like the whole sending offer system where you can't send the same offer to others because an offer was already sent. Plus, I just didn't like how I have to pay $2 to get my money. It just wasn't a great change. Buyers are already pissed off and now the sellers are equally annoyed.

I’m not sure how the Mercari change is going to go. The changes aren’t bad per say, but it is passing along the fees to the buyer and that can be off putting to the buyer. I get that, but from a selling perspective it’s not a lot of changes. There’s still going to be a middle ground found. Economics is still at play. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. To me, the change just gives me more opportunity to Promote my listings to keep them closer to the top of search. So that’s 2 extra promotions that I may not have had to get me back to the same profit. We will see how it goes though. It’s definitely hurting in the short term, judging by my weekend lack of sales or offers. Hopefully buyers and sellers can find that happy medium and continue on.

You don't have to pay the 2 dollar fee on Mercari to get your money, but if you don't pay that fee you will have to wait 24-48 hours to get paid for the item you sold. Sadly I usually pay the fee because I want to get my money as soon as possible!

I did the 10% reduction on Mercari mostly so Mercari couldn't double dip by charging me fees AND the customer fees if I didn't adjust all my listings. I have over 1500 items listed there and it was worth it to be able to bulk edit them. I don't really mind the $2 fee either - I normally will let at least $100 accumulate there and then pay the $3 to get it immediately since it takes them a week to transfer the money using the other method.

Mercari doesn't take any fees for items you sell, but when you want to withdraw your money then you have to pay $2. Whether your balance is $10 or $1000, the withdrawal fee is $2 for direct deposit (or $3 for instant transfer).

My 2 cents on the fees for withdrawal is just my opinion. They are hoping that sellers let the $$ sit and dont immediately withdraw it, simply because the longer the funds sit in there account the more intrest they can earn. For a platform this size you easily could be talking a hundred thousand or more in intrest daily over all the sales through there platform.

I loved Mercari because in just my personal experience they would back the seller if you purchased shipping through them. I did have a couple of obvious eBay grifters try to get price reductions….which was not possible on Mercari send all back or keep item at purchase price. I’m wondering if mercari is still going to be interceding on refunds or just refunding everything like eBay and who’s eating the shipping…buyers, sellers or mercari? I’m going to wait it out and see what happens but I’m worried it will be a field day for the eBay con artists to hit Mercari.
