This is one of my favorite movies! I’ve seen it so many times. “Give me an occupation Ms. Dashwood, or I shall run mad.” Ugh, love Col. Brandon 🥰

Fun fact: this film took place shortly after Emma Thompson's divorce from Kenneth Branagh - she wasn't looking for love, but a psychic told her she'd meet her husband during the filming of her next movie, and she actually did! Though she initially tried to set Kate up with him, Emma ended up marrying Greg Wise, who plays the dashing Willoughby in this adaptation. They're still married to this day. 💕

I think it was Greg who saw the psychic, which was why he initially took out Kate. Anyone could see the chemistry between them in the ball scene....

She also played the Mother in My Family and Other Animals, and Vera in Vera Drake, for which she received an Oscar nomination. And she's a lovely person! Many years ago, when I used to run a restaurant in Devon, she was a fairly frequent customer, along with her fellow actors from the local repertory company. She was always very warm and a lot of fun. It was exciting to see the success she made of her later career. Couldn't be more well deserved, IMO.

I ran into Imelda Staunton in the private wood next to my sister's house (which is owned by her landlord who is Imelda's cousin) when she helped me round up my sister's wayward terrier. I have face blindness so never recognise anyone and after having a lovely chat with her I caught up with my sister who asked me if I knew who I'd just been speaking to. I assumed I'd just failed to recognise a neighbour yet again (happens a lot) and she said "no, that was the Bafta award winning Imelda Staunton" 😅

Such a wonderful movie! Emma Thompson won an Oscar for her adapted screenplay, and Kate Winslet had her first Oscar nomination in only her second film. Her first film is also fantastic-Heavenly Creatures in 1994 was the first non-horror film directed by Peter Jackson, who scored his first Oscar nomination for its screenplay (along with his partner Fran Walsh). That movie also deserves a reaction on this channel!

I think Willoughby started out with the intent to just play around with/seduce Marianne, just like he did with Eliza (who he left pregnant), but ended up falling in love with her against his will. I think his aim was always to marry wealth, but he surprised himself by falling for Marianne and would have asked her to marry him. But as soon as his aunt threatened to cut him off (because of Eliza), he decided to secure his wealth elsewhere (with Miss 50-thousand pounds). Even had he married Marriane, I think he would have eventually cheated. Marianne is very lucky that she didn't end up like Eliza-- with her passionate nature she likely would have slept with him fully expecting them to get married.

Emma Thompson was in several of her then-husband Kenneth Branagh’s films- Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, and Dead Again. All of them are amazing! The first two are some of my favorite Shakespeare films ever. I used to put my dvd of Henry V on my tv before beginning the weekly cleaning of my apartment and just have the dialogue blaring out at top volume while I dusted. I was able to quote the opening of Derek Jacobi’s Chorus speech in full. Emma and Kenneth remain my favorite Beatrice and Benedict on screen-the way they snipe at each other is so well done. I saw Dead Again in the theater, and I still love its moody mix of noir and Hitchcockian flare.

I needed this today. This movie is one of my favorite movies & a top Austen adaptation. Emma Thompson's screenplay captured the warmth and humor of the novel. Beautifully acted. It's hilarious how many of the actors reunited in HP movies. Imogen Stubbs, who plays Lucy here, won the contest director Ang Lee set up where the actors had to write something from the POV of their character. The mother is Madam Pomfrey, healing the kids in the Hospital wing; Barton is Cornelius Fudge, the minister of magic; his mother is the Fat Lady from the painting letting the Gryffindors into their quarters. Ellinor, Emma Thompson, is of course Professor Trelawney. Imelda Staunton was glorious as the horrible Dolores Umbridge in the Order of the Phoenix.

the weird part is, Willoughby actually did care for Marianne, it just didn't out match his need to keep his lavish lifestyle and he's free to just pretend Marianne doesn't exist anymore because he's a man in that society...the woman Colonel Brandon previously was in love with had a daughter whom was warded in the area as long as Brandon paid for her living expenses...Willoughby had also knocked her up, just pretended she didn't exist anymore too, and Colonel Brandon had to meet him in London to kick his ass for it (not to mention how he ghosted Marianne)

another fun favorite of mine, although the regency era was beautiful it too was a hard time for women. Inheritance laws as shown in the film only the son got it. or is there was no son the fortunate may have gone to the son of a make relative (as mentioned in pride and prejudice) and the widow and daughters would have been at that relatives mercy. This was literally the days where if you were a woman it was marriage for survival very rarely for love however you could pick a man you liked, and that was through dances and gatherings then it was a wait game. it was impolite for the lady to call onto the man (but if you befriended the sister of course your could use that as a method to hopefully get a quick greeting but visits were normally 15 minutes unless it was super urgency or you were invited to stay for lunch it was rude to stay longer then that. So women would hope they made a good impression on a man at the dances or events they attended and sit and wait hoping he'd call. so it was very important to be active in dance and party events. If I remember right the ONLY way a woman got everything was if she had a type of tittle (in Jane Austen persuasion) (going by the movie from the late 80's / or early 90's Anne's family had a cousin who was a viscountess who I believed was a widow but she had a son so she could have her share of the inheritance. sadly in this film. The mother wasn't the biological mother of the heir and hence he could of either been kind to her or not, fortunately he had to give them a share because his father had him promise him to be kind but his own wife's manipulation and treatment made him restrict that kindness which was very sad which is why at the end in order to maintain good reputation was probably why the brother and his wife attended because the younger sister married a man with high status and it would of been sus if they didn't and I guess the whole story of their frugal treatment would of came out. and in conclusion reputation, money, and attending events were all an important way of survival for the women and to keep their family's safe especially if they didn't have a male heir and their fate depended on who the daughter married.
