You are also a good team, John 'seems' a little more knowledgeable, but- he may just have that pilot's approach to problem solving. You are a riot, right out there with feelings & language- love it! That is amazing! For all the worry it is, and rightly so, it's still an amazing thing to see. I can't offer any advice on what to do with regard to sailing with whales and avoiding them but what I can say is WOW! That is some fantastic footage. I love the longer video and such great content. Sydney is a beautiful place the "fairies" (good old Aussie accent! lol) are also great to see. As for the bucket list thing it sure is. My wife was like a little kid when I finally took her to Sydney (where I was born but didn't grow up in). Growing up in Scotland she always thought of Sydney as being Australia (I corrected her by living in Perth, which in my opinion is far prettier :) ) but it was a bucket list thing for her, as was going to Bondi beach. Where we stayed was a beautiful hotel directly opposite Luna Park. So every morning she woke up to the iconic Sydney skyline of the bridge, the Opera House, and all of the rest. Absolutely great content and I am looking forward to the next log.

Whale strikes happen. It's a thing. Boats sink and whales can die -or have scars on their backs from propellors. I live on the West coast of Canada and we have Humpbacks too (as well as Orcas and others). When a whale is sighted within 100 meters of your boat and your engine is running the rules are that you should put your boat into neutral. You can leave the engine running but at least stop the prop from spinning to reduce the risk of harming the animal if there is any contact. If you see one whale, there is usually many more. Keep under 10 knots (usually not a problem for a sailboat). Give them the right of way, don't cut off their path. Especially if they have a calf. We have to stay farther away if they are resting. Other types of whales require larger distances (Orcas: 200m, Belugas 400m)

@@KristinasTravels They recommend to maintain your heading- if safe to do so, (ie not headed for another whale, another boat, a rock or other such hazard). Since you probably aren't sailing above 10 knots, you won't have to reduce your sails but, you may want to do so to slow down and take in the sights- You are on a FREE, impromptu, whale watching tour! Also, an accidental collision at speed would not be good for your boat or the whale.

Congratulation to you both! It shows that you are 50% media professional and 50% a captain! :-) Sydney is the most beautiful harbour in the world! I stopped for a year to explore all nooks and crannies in Sydney and close-by Double Bay before heading further north to the incomparable Whitsundays. In Sydney Harbour I berthed at Birkenhead Marina, (favourite location with plenty of coffee's n' shops!) Woolwich Marina (if you like a good view of NYE fireworks, and long walks past a famous pub to the ferry) and RSYS, (nice restaurant for members !) Worst risk-factor at sea is definitely lack of quality sleep. I learned on the job too and to this day I'm still obsessing about ropes staying safely onboard at all time!! Now when in Sydney you will feel so much more experienced and comfortable in your sail routine honing your sailing skills on the job! Why not slip under the lifting road bridge (triggering some road-rage...) and visit Bantry Bay for some secluded R&R there? Say hello to the friendly cockatoos that will visit your boat. One landed a foot away from my face and stayed for lunch. (Roasted Chicken is a winner.) A gentleman served excellent coffees from a roaming barge with a diesel outboard (!). A purveyor of Ice-creams, sweet "Danish" (the Danes call them "Viennas") and newspapers are on offer too. Also: Goodonya, Hayfield dingy is a absolute top top brand and in the Whitsundays they can make some solar covers for it. Q: How do you spot a rental yacht? A: They have no radar-dome or emergency life raft and usually no dingy outboard, but always bright yellow covers on the dingy. 4-stroke outboard is often a pain. I had a Honda 2hp and same Suzuki 6hp and I rather stick to my current ultralight storable 2-stroke 3 hp Mercury at just 13 kg! Re wales: It is nothing you can do so just relax and slow down and keep motor running because it may be a good idea. Prevention is futile so trust the wales to be careful. Obviously you cannot predict where a 25,000 kg wale will broach at speed next, so then you can not predict if one may hit your vessel. Good news is that they seldom cause any damage, because why would they? Apparently they do it to attract females, or just to let everyone know they are around.

Happy days 😀. Back from sailing holidays and catching up on your channel. Just caught up and noticed this video was uploaded as I was watching the previous one. Great to see you guys have finally got out there. Lots of clips out there of whales attacking boats in the med and breaking their rudders. Apparently you should turn off your depth sounder as the sonar affects the whales. Just sold our Sun Odyssey 32, as we are buying a holiday home in Ireland. I badly need to buy another boat, as I am doing too much house and garden chores. Setting a very bad precedent 😅😅😅

Hey Mates, another great video. I know you found the whales in front of you rather scary and rightfully so, but let's take a look at some things. 1. How many people in the world have actually seen the ocean in person? 2. How many of those people have actually had the wonderful pleasure of being out on the open ocean? (raises hand) 3. Of those few fortunate individuals that have been on the open ocean, how many have seen whales up close (or closer than comfortable)? Moral of the story; where there is danger, there is also much beauty. You have experienced something that few have and most never will. Good on you mates.

I think with Whales is that you are in their backyard and therefore at their mercy. All you can do is hold your course. You paid your insurance premium right. I can remember a NZ yacht Snow White hitting a Whale and sinking when returning from Fiji. The crew were rescued from the life raft. Your editing is getting better and better 👍👍

While I'm on board.. that's a MUST! 😂 I got rope burn on my hand today... 😳 the headsail furl came off the winch while under load and I went to grab it.... never again. 😭 and do you know what.. re: your story about whales..... BA, the delivery skipper who was in Skyfall (the yacht in front of us).. he told us a story.. when he was doing the Sydney to Hobart yacht race a few years back, they believe they hit a whale, and lost their rudder, it created a massive hole in their hull, and they had to keep throwing clothes and whatever they had on board, and the force was just sucking all their clothes into the water.. they couldn't stop it.. and yes.. the yacht suck and they had to be rescued.. so I was def scarred by this story and was visualising this happening to us!!!!! Dramatic perhaps, but also possible?! Thanks for your editing comment too.. I spent.. like 3 days + editing this one... so, MUCH LOVE to you!!! ❤️ Cheers!

Awsome as always, It should be interisting going back down this year(if any of us can) as the humpbacks are so numerous and tend to be much more active on the return trip. We run our engine especially at night but it may be a case if wearing a necklace to stop the sky from falling on your head. BTW spotted you guys on AIS, your location is awsome. Hi John, I could be completely wrong about running the engine at night, just my best guess. I know from diving that the Southern Rights move away from noise but the show off humpbacks and sometimes inquisitive calves are a bit unpredictable and will occasionaly approach you. I finally got the gearbox fixed the day before the border shut so we are still in Coffs, bet you guys are happy not to be in Melbourne right now. Watch out for those sudden wind bullets up there, its an awsome spot. Keep the vids coming have to get our fix somewhere.

Keep your course, they need your path to be predictable and they will do the rest. Moving and trying to dodge them disturbs them even more. They are the ones watching you, not the other way around!!!

Hey mate, thanks for the tip, this is what most people have told us, although I’m curious if it’s not unlike animals on the road (dogs, kangaroos, etc), rarely do they seem to understand you’re following a road/straight path and often end up startled and right in front of you.. for the time being we are only adjusting course, as little as needed, if there’s any serious concern they aren’t going to move of consistently appear on the route with no sign of movement as we get closer. It’s worked so far but would be good to know for sure 😆

We sailed a Dufour 385 from Newcastle to Hamilton island 4 times in peak whale season. Our rule was to run the engine at night even if just idling during sailing. If a whale appeared in front turn to try and keep about 100 metres away. We never had a close encounter they keep away.

Haha! Yes, some super strong adhesion assistance 😂😉❤️ It was this super strong double sided sticky foam that was recommended to us by the RV guys who sold us the panels! Interesting but the panel is still stuck on there, to this day!

If ever I get the chance to sail up close to whales, I would cut my speed to the minimum with regard to maintaining a heading that i needed to continue my journey, not heard of whales avoiding sailboats before. If you hit one hard it could do a lot of damage to your keel. So i guess common sense should apply just to be safe, reduce sail and try and avoid the pod. Good luck on your journey, stay safe and away from crowds while ashore. Covid is going to be here for a very long time everywhere in the world..

Hey Bob, I tend to agree about trying to slow down and avoid the pod. I think expecting whales to know where you’re headed and to move won’t always work. A bit like expecting animals to understand you’re following a road while driving, unfortunately it seems most of them get startled and end up right in front of you. The skipper we followed up told us a story of how the boat he was on in a Sydney to Hobart hit a whale and caused so much damage they had to abandon the boat. Can’t imagine the poor whale coming off best in that scenario either. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts 🙂👌🏻

For all your power needs you would have been better off with Lithium Iron batteries as they are far better with regards to discharge level (able to go lower than Lead Acid). I do feel that you should have had some sailing lessons, as you would have had a better knowledge in sailing and handling issues as they arose, due to the training. Kristina you have a great challenge ahead and the sea, weather and mother nature is not to be taken lightly.
