Its autumn on our beautiful farm in Central Portugal and time to start preparing our fields for the Winter / Spring grass growing season. Our neighbour Joaquim tills our fields with his trusty Ford Tractor and we spill the beans on why we haven't been seen on KZbin for the last couple of weeks!

I have a friend that just renovated his "rural" cottage. He installed a big heat pump water heater (its a man sized one) and two solar panels to help the efficiency of the heat pump. I was really amazed that those solar panels alone were bringing the water up to 70 celsius in the day time ( granted, it was august...) and the system lost just a couple of degrees overnight. I think that a big enough heat pump reservoir and some solar water panels really go a big way into having no shortage of hot water. The down side it's a big upfront investment.

We have a similar system for our hot water. Two solar water heating panels and a 300 litre watertank to store it. The water gets boiling but also has an electrical water heater element in the tank in case of cloudy days. Definitely drops our electricity bill around half in the summer months

It’s wonderful that you can work with a local farmer. Having your property cared for is a real bonus. I grew up in the country, my dad an brothers were both farmers. It’s hard work. Having someone to use your land is very special.. I would love to see more of the produce from your neighbour some time. Cheers🐨

Most Livestock guardians are instinctively territorial. The desire to enlarge their territory comes naturally, which makes them born wanderers and escape artists. Many a Kangal owner will tell you a six foot fence isn't high enough..! Can't help you with Centipedes but Maintenance to prevent the return of Kidney stones that works is the Juice of one lemon with a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar mixed with a shot of olive oil first thing every morning. Always enjoy the Vids...

Every time Joaquim comes and works your field, I feel like you "feel the need" to explain/defend" the decision. That is too bad, what's important is that he is an experienced Portuguese farmer and that you have a really good relationship. He is a valued part of your life as a neighbor and friend. Let him work your field without guilt.

Oh gosh Ken, i can understand the pain of kidney stones, being a female, i understand the for a male experiencing them is much more painful.i also know with high heat temps your risks are increased, so very important to drink tons of water, and maybe also get a cranberry supplement. And then a centipede bite!!! Dear lord youve been through alot quickly. Did you go to ER for centipede bite? What do you do in that situation? Just benedryl and wait it out? Holy heck what a bad situation for both. Glad to here you are on the mend. The farm is looking amazing with Jaoqin plowing❤ and im excited to see the new fencing project! God bless to you and Gina.

Enjoyed this episode. Chock a block with lots of good stuff. I'll never tire of watching Joaquim work. I so appreciate your featuring him and thereby honoring rural farm work and life. Farmers like Joaquim deserve recognition from everyone. Would be cool if the national government recognized him. Will vm much enjoy your filming portuguese artisans, etc. Sorry you had been in such pain! We've had a death in the fam an ocean away and also a visit from a cousin from Canada... the routine & energy really does get thrown off a bit, and I'm just catching up with putting things in better order. Can you buy mamma hen a few scoops of nice crunchified bugs to eat? Oo, you're cooling/heating/dehumidification system sounds exciting! Good luck with this and your fencing. Think about short Wellies for your walks around at night? 😊

Funny that in Portugal (and southern Europe in general), the younger generations want to 'westernise' their lifestyle and move to western Europe or 'the city', while more and more people in western Europe are sick of the 'western' lifestyle and want to go have a farm. I, personally, can't wait to move to Portugal and start a small farm. It sucks that the prices of houses have increased so much the last couple of years.

Glad to hear you're feeling better. Luckily we don't have these centipedes up north (I think). Very hard work to tighten fences but not really difficult if you have the right approach (ratchet straps, two boards and some nuts and bolds and something to attach the ratchets to). We made our fence with sheep fence, 6 cm posts and an extra wire that we had go trough the bottom part of the fence and tightened them with those fence tightening things. Dogs could push up the fence anymore and stayed in. Don't know if you've already started with the new fence but adding the wire on the bottom will safe you lots of money and work.

Well 4 years in Portugal! Any regrets or things you would do differently? It’s great that you can find neighbors who are willing to work your fields for the grass that comes off it. I would have thought they would do it for a percentage of the grass. Might consider some good rubber boots that you can slip in and out of . Glad you’re feeling better! Lesson learned?

Awesome video and happy to hear of your recovery! Ps: you look way healthier now then when you started your v logs ... guess this portuguese life is doing you good 😃 ... ive also been tilling but manually as the land ive aquired hasn't been worked on for 20 years ... unfortunattly no mr Joaquim around here so we've had to improvise using the following.... 1×upside down scythe...interwined in 1x sky facing pitchfork + ×1 large brick for weight+ a lot of cellotape to keep it in place... then i sorta just walk around and it digs into the ground and tills as I drag my contraption about... of course my area is a lot smaller then yours but has made the process 10x easier... + added benefit of being able to skip the gym for the rest of the week 😄 great to see eddie looking really healthy too. I would recommend to put the AC machine as close as posible to the unit, because lose so much power and also could happen many leaks. Also the noise I think is not much, I have two machines in my apartment balcony , and me inside the room with two slices big cristal doors and I dont listen absolutely nothing from outside. Try do as simple as possible, with the machine just as close as posible to avoid further problems.

Welcome back! Holy crap about the centipede incident!! About those vines that will be inside the fenced area... why not keep some, train them to grow over a pergola and make a nice, dappled-shade area to hang out in, including for Eddy. Also the ones that really don't make sense to keep could be dug up and transplanted. Vines root really easily from a cutting if done at the right time of year (probably after leaf-drop, once the ground is wet where you are), so they probably also transplant easily if done at a similar time of year. Wise choice on the heat pump for A/C, efficient electric heating and de-humidification. Check out rocket mass heaters as a supplementary, very efficient way to heat with wood, or even twigs. Placement in the house is important, of course, should be central, not at one end.

Sorry you've had a rough go the last couple of weeks. Hopefully no more health problems. Stinky and fly producing but it might help restore the field to produce more. Hugs from 🇨🇦

Welcome, Ken. I've been afraid of centipedes since I read somewhere that they were dangerous. Whenever I see one, usually at my mother's house, I don't kill the animal but I always find a way to get it out of there. Yes, they bite and expel poison that is dangerous to us humans. I read about it but this experience had never been reported by anyone I knew (a little bit). Kidney pain is horrible, my father had it. Glad everything is fine now. I look forward to the new videos about Portuguese customs. Um beijinho para a Gina. All the best to you.

Hi guys. Enjoyed watching and happy you are on the mend. I myself am still feeling really low and sad, but hey, so is life. Didn't know centepedes were dangerous at all, yikes!!! And having had kidney stones and given birth, birth is a walk in the park compared. If your stone is still there, you might want to blast it. Since I blasted mine (curiously in the uk), never had any more problems. Don't forget to drink plenty of water and cut salt, alcohol etc for a bit. I felt bad when Joaquim trashed your path😅! the fall till = good when you need to sow new seeds, the summer till = bad (exposes the soil and kills every live organism in the soil) and makes it harder for the soil to absorb the rainwater which then creates erosion issues and draught... you can see the results of not killing the soil in the summer, it improves the soil... so with your own eyes you have noticed the benefit of being good to the soil we need the young people to understand why farming is important... else we are all gonna get really hungry... I kinda hope to get a mini-scale farm going when I move to PT... but it won't be on the same scale as Joaquim, he does a great amount of work on a lot of land.
